A Study Of Asymmetry In Mosquitofish Populations In Polluted And Nonpolluted Environments Using A New Scale Staining Technique., J Mark Brubaker

All ETDs from UAB

Levels of fluctuating asymmetry were compared in two populations of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) from polluted waters and two populations from nonpolluted waters. Two of the characters studied, pectoral fin rays and lateral line scales, showed no asymmetry in these populations and therefore provided no data for comparisons. A third character, number of pores in the lateral line scales, showed asymmetry in all populations. Asymmetry was quantified in two ways: the absolute difference between counts on left and right sides Id I, and the number of asymmetrical scale pairs, ASP. ASP provided a more sensitive measure of asymmetry than did |d| …

The Effect Of Nutritional Conditions On Floc Formation In Zoogloea Ramigera., Johanna M. White Jan 1982

The Effect Of Nutritional Conditions On Floc Formation In Zoogloea Ramigera., Johanna M. White

All ETDs from UAB

The formation of bacterial flocs is of crucial importance in the activated sludge process of biological system, treatment waste treatment. In such a generally begins with the settling of large suspended solids from the influent wastewater. The liquid is then channeled into the reaction basin where soluble organic compounds undergo degradation, which is primarily accomplished by the metabolic activity of bacteria, though fungi, algae and protozoa may contribute to the process. Vigorous agitation facilitates contact between substrate molecules and microbes, and aeration maintains the necessary oxygen tension to sustain the aerobic organisms pertinent to the process. During this stage of …

Restraint As A Predictor Of Intake Patterns Among Obese Women., Shauna Marie Laughna

All ETDs from UAB

Obesity is a label that has different meanings. Sims (1979) has outlined three definitions of obesity. The first is the social definition, based upon visual perception of the individual being labelled. The second is the statistical definition, based upon a population norm and typically specifying the upper 5-20% of what- ever criterion is being used.

Synthesis Of Protected Amino Alcohols And Amino Aldehydes., Charles Freeman Stanfield Jan 1981

Synthesis Of Protected Amino Alcohols And Amino Aldehydes., Charles Freeman Stanfield

All ETDs from UAB

Muscle degeneration and wasting in muscular dystrophy (MD) has been shown to be associated with high levels of proteolytic enzymes called Cathepsins. Antipain and leupeptin, naturally occurring peptide aldehydes, have been shown to be of possible therapeutic value in treatment of MD. The cost of these compounds, however, has made large scale clinical studies impossible. The purpose of this work was to develop a general synthesis of protected amino acid aldehydes, and to apply this methodology to the total synthesis of antipain. An efficient, general method for the synthesis of protected amino acid aldehydes was developed. The key intermediates in the …

Selenium was J.J. Berzelius. discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist It was identified in a red deposit that had collected on the floor of a room in which sulfur, obtained as an industrial waste product from a copper mine, had been used; its similarity to tellurium had caused it to have been mistaken for that element. Since the name tellurium had been coined from talus, the Latin word for "earth," Berzelius named his discovery after the Greek word for "moon," selene.

Alcohol-Related Arrests In Birmingham., Robert L. Berry

All ETDs from UAB

Criminologists and historians generally conclude that the present is neither the best nor the worst as far as crime is concerned. Durkheim (1964) made a memorable observation on the inevitability of criminal acts when he said, "Crime is normal because a society exempt from it is utterly impossible" (p. 67).
