Intramural Electrical Uncoupling During Long-Duration Ventricular Fibrillation In Rabbit, Trenika A. Madden
Intramural Electrical Uncoupling During Long-Duration Ventricular Fibrillation In Rabbit, Trenika A. Madden
All ETDs from UAB
Ventricular fibrillation is a lethal cardiac arrhythmia which alters electrophysiological properties of the myocardium while concurrently inducing global ischemia and is associated with high mortality rates. Studies on the organization of long-duration ventricular fibrillation (LDVF) have shown that an endocardial to epicardial (i.e. transmural) activation rate gradient exists during ventricular fibrillation in canine and human myocardium; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that the activation rate gradient reflects heterogeneous changes in tissue electrical resistivity resulting in differential transmural electrical uncoupling of the ventricular myocardium. LDVF (>5min) was electrically induced in anesthetized, open-chest rabbits using …

Effect Of The Combined Treatment Of Tra-8, An Agonistic Dr5 Antibody, And Tamoxifen On Breast Cancer Cells, Tiara Napier
All ETDs from UAB
With the exclusion of skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common malignancy among American women and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The disease affects an estimated 1.3 million women annually worldwide. Some breast cancer cells have developed mechanisms of circumventing drug treatment. Clinical needs for breast cancer cell sensitization to anti-cancer drugs include the targeted, controlled killing of cancer cells. An agonistic death receptor 5 (DR5) antibody, TRA-8, has been proven effective in inducing cancer cell death via the intrinsic and extrinsic tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand apoptotic pathways. Combining TRA-8 treatment …
Rhodopsin Trafficking And Retinal Function, Nicholas Joseph Reish
Rhodopsin Trafficking And Retinal Function, Nicholas Joseph Reish
All ETDs from UAB
The health and maintenance of rod photoreceptors depends on the high-fidelity vectorial transport of rhodopsin from its site of synthesis in the inner segment to its final resting place in the outer segment disks. Multiple molecular interactions play a role in this process, including the interaction of the small GTPase rab11a with rhodopsin that was first described in vertebrates in amphibians. We found that the interaction of the small GTPase rab11a and rhodopsin is conserved in mammalian retina. This interaction is direct, is abrogated by human disease-causing truncation mutations in rhodopsin, and does not depend on the nucleotide binding status …
Effects Of Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) And Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum) Intercropping Techniques On Intermittent Stream Macroinvertebrate Communities, Kelly L. Breland
Effects Of Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) And Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum) Intercropping Techniques On Intermittent Stream Macroinvertebrate Communities, Kelly L. Breland
All ETDs from UAB
Forestry management activities can influence hydrologic regimes of intermittent streams which can influence the macroinvertebrate community of these streams. To test the effects of various harvesting and intercropping techniques, five small watersheds (0.08-0.25 km2) in Greene County, AL have been monitored before and after various treatments. Modified rapid bioassesment protocols were used to sample each stream every two weeks prior to treatments and once a month following treatments. In an effort to capture the full seasonality of these intermittent streams, samples were collected for a full year following the first sampling date. Macroinvertebrate community data has been analyzed using multimetric …
Asset-Based Citizen Development: A Theoretical Contribution, Rachel Marie Hicks
Asset-Based Citizen Development: A Theoretical Contribution, Rachel Marie Hicks
All ETDs from UAB
Asset-based citizen development provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for the development of individual assets through a methodological process that incorporates asset-based community development theory, organizational knowledge management practices, and human resource accounting principles. Borrowing inspiration from John Kretzmann and John McKnight's (1993) theory of asset-based community development, asset-based citizen development concentrates on the asset and skill development of the citizen through collective opportunities for transactional exchanges of assets and skills with other community actors. Knowledge management practices and human resource accounting principles supplement asset-based community development by providing universities a systematic method for the organizational implementation of a process that …
Predictors Of Falls Among Older Adults, Jaspreet Kaur
Predictors Of Falls Among Older Adults, Jaspreet Kaur
All ETDs from UAB
With an aging population, more attention has to be focused on the needs of older adults, especially regarding medical and psychological concerns. Thirty-three percent of older adults fall each year, and falling is one of the leading causes of accidental death nationwide. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of falls among sedentary community-dwelling older adults (age 65+). The study employed a secondary data analysis of measures collected in the Physical and Cognitive Exercise Study (PACES). Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate whether individual or composite measures of vision, cognition, and physical functioning were associated with an …
Gabaergic Dysfunction In Huntington Disease, Sarah Elizabeth Dougherty
Gabaergic Dysfunction In Huntington Disease, Sarah Elizabeth Dougherty
All ETDs from UAB
GABAergic neurons are responsible for regulation of neuronal signaling through inhibition. Alterations in the delicate balance of excitation and inhibition have been observed in many neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases. Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by motor, psychiatric, and cognitive disturbances. As the hallmark movement pathology of HD is hyperkinesis it is intriguing to postulate that alterations in inhibition, and by extension within GABAergic cell networks, could be part of the pathogenesis of this disorder. In order to elucidate the role of GABAergic cell populations in HD we have used behavioral paradigms, molecular …
The Contribution Of Intereim Executives To The Healthcare Industry, Ray Snead
The Contribution Of Intereim Executives To The Healthcare Industry, Ray Snead
All ETDs from UAB
This is the first research-based study of interim executive services in the US healthcare industry. It opens a new area of inquiry for academic investigation of the role of interim executive services in the healthcare industry. The study focused on Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors leadership in acute care hospitals of all sizes across the United States. The research survey resulted in 443 responses to over seventy-five questions addressing interim executive services from the perspective of healthcare decision makers. Ninety five percent of the respondents were CEOs and the remainder were board members, primarily chairpersons. The research is …
The Effectiveness Of A Behavioral Summer Treatment Program For Children With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elisabeth Sheridan Mitchell
The Effectiveness Of A Behavioral Summer Treatment Program For Children With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elisabeth Sheridan Mitchell
All ETDs from UAB
Children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate a number of core social and behavioral deficits that affect their ability to interact effectively with peers. Despite recommendations to improve intervention programs for children with high-functioning ASD, few empirical studies have evaluated the effectiveness of comprehensive, skills building behavioral interventions. Previous clinical case studies documented that a behavioral summer treatment program (STP) produced substantial changes in behavior and social functioning for several children with high-functioning ASD. While the STP may be a promising efficacious intervention for these children, a quantitative examination is needed to further examine the effectiveness of the STP …
