As portions of George Orwell's 1984 (1949) and Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock (1970) approach the realm of reality, it is possible that human learning in the future will likewise have characteristics that most people deem an impossibility today. Tomorrow's learner will demand accessibility to a variety of information relevant to his or her programmed courses of study. According to Goodlad, O’Toole, and Tyler (1966), tomorrow's learner will process more information at a faster rate and with more comprehension than does the learner of today. Future educators will be required to abandon certain segments of education as we know it today, …

The UAB drug abuse treatment team is faced with the very difficult task of planning the use of the program's various resources and predicting the outcome of treatment based on the information gathered at the point of admission to the program. This information usually consists minimally of demographic data and a detailed drug use history. The initial evaluative process is extremely critical and reflects the program's ability to meet its goals. The UAB Drug Abuse Program, in an effort to insure the accomplishment of its objectives, has become engaged in an assessment of several of its treatment modalities.

In the first quarter of the nineteenth century American religion was in a state of ferment. The gaining of independence had brought changes to the political order which required organized religion to re-evaluate its position. Nearly all the traditional churches saw the need to develop national organizations. Some churches, most notably the Anglicans, were forced to make structural changes because they had been tightly bound to ecclesiastical authorities in England. West of the Appalachian Mountains, where the traditional churches were weak or nonexistent, reformers were unchallenged in the spread of new ideas.

As a region of myth, paradox, and even fantasy, the South often finds itself defending beliefs no longer defensible, structuring facades of reason and rationality which reluctantly collapse when faced with factual reality. Rarely do Southerners inspect their traditions, and even more rarely do they find them lacking. This phenomenon is exemplified in many areas of Southern life. The intricate and complex voting requirements contrived by Southern states at the turn of the century and the entire concept of "separate but equal" both indicate attempts by Southerners to justify beliefs they were unwilling to reject. The entire system of Southern …

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is contracted as an intrauterine infection by the fetus during the fifth month of gestation (Medearis, 1964). One form of this virus is sometimes accompanied by a classical array of symptoms : jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, purpura, erythroblastic or hemolytic anemia, central nervous system disease (Stem, Booth, Eleck and Fleck, 1969). In addition, thrombocytopenia, chorioretinitis, pneumonia and diarrhea also may be found (Emmanuel and Kenny, 1966 ; Medearis, 1964, and Weller and Hanshaw, 1962). CMV, when associated with this classical array of symptoms, is referred to as Cytomegalovirus Inclusion Disease (CID) (Stern et al., 1969). Cytomegalovirus which is accompanied by …
