Formaldehyde Exposure In Pregnant Women And Its Relationship To Fetal Growth, Azita Amiri
Formaldehyde Exposure In Pregnant Women And Its Relationship To Fetal Growth, Azita Amiri
All ETDs from UAB
Formaldehyde exposure during pregnancy has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as poor fetal growth, although few studies have examined formaldehyde exposure during pregnancy and its relationship to fetal growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of formaldehyde exposure during pregnancy and examine the relationship between formaldehyde exposure and fetal growth. Formaldehyde exposure was examined, using vapor monitor badge and urine formic acid, in 140 women in their second trimester of pregnancy. One time urine samples were collected during a routine prenatal visit, and women wore the vapor badges for 24 hours. Fetal growth was …
The Role Of Wnt5a In Tumor Suppression And Differentiation, Stephanie Easter
The Role Of Wnt5a In Tumor Suppression And Differentiation, Stephanie Easter
All ETDs from UAB
TGF-beta and the Wnt signaling pathways play key roles in regulating ductal growth and branching morphogenesis in the mammary gland. Disruption to this signaling can cause deregulation of the normal mammary stem cell population and foster an environment favorable for tumorigenesis and recurrence. Recent studies show that TGF-beta up-regulates expression of the non-canonical Wnt, Wnt5a, in the mammary gland and that Wnt5a antagonizes canonical Wnt/beta-catenin signaling in mammary epithelial cells. Canonical Wnt/beta-catenin signaling has been strongly implicated in expanding the mammary stem/progenitor cell pool. Here, we test the hypothesis that Wnt5a suppresses the expansion of the mammary stem and progenitor …
An Integrative Literature Review Assessing The Need For A Health Education Intervention For Adults With Pedophilia In Alabama, Lynn V. English
An Integrative Literature Review Assessing The Need For A Health Education Intervention For Adults With Pedophilia In Alabama, Lynn V. English
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of this study was to assess the need in the State of Alabama for a health education intervention for adults with pedophilia. Following the PRECEDE half of the PRECEDE-PROCEED planning model, the author examined the health issue of pedophilia within the State of Alabama. There are three constructs by which a health issue may be examined using PRECEDE: Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling. The extant literature on pedophilia and child sexual abuse (CSA) was reviewed organized by these constructs. PRECEDE also consists of five assessment phases: social assessment; epidemiological assessment; behavioral assessment; educational, environmental, and ecological assessments; and administrative …
Determining The Role Of Neuregulin-1 And Its Erbb Receptors In The Pathogenesis Of Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors, Stephanie Brosius
Determining The Role Of Neuregulin-1 And Its Erbb Receptors In The Pathogenesis Of Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors, Stephanie Brosius
All ETDs from UAB
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are the most common cause of death in patients with neurofibromatosis type-1. These aggressive, Schwann cell-derived tumors have no treatment beyond surgical resection. Developing targeted chemotherapeutics remains crucial to improving patient survival. The Schwann cell mitogen neuregulin-1 (NRG1) was shown to mediate the migration, proliferation and survival of MPNSTs. Furthermore, overexpression of NRG1 in Schwann cells (P0-GGF beta 3 mice) on an outbred C57BL/6J x SJL/J background induced the formation of neurofibromas and MPNSTs similar to human disease, yet these mice have intact neurofibromin. To determine if NRG1 acts within the same signaling cascade …
The Role Of Children's Books In Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy, Deborah Bailey
The Role Of Children's Books In Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy, Deborah Bailey
All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative case study explored the factors that contributed to how typical book reading practices and the time spent on book reading were implemented during the school day. Previous research has shown the importance of reading books to young children and that providing access to books has led to reading growth and progress. However, little research has focused on actually identifying how or if books are used during the course of a classroom day. This investigation was conducted in three elementary schools within two school districts in the southeastern United States. Study participants included eight elementary teachers who taught a …
Acculturation And Social Support As Predictors Of Physical Activity In A Web-Based Intervention For Latinas, Tanya Benitez
Acculturation And Social Support As Predictors Of Physical Activity In A Web-Based Intervention For Latinas, Tanya Benitez
All ETDs from UAB
Latinas in the United States report high levels of physical inactivity and are disproportionately burdened by associated chronic diseases, demonstrating the need for innovative approaches to reducing these disparities. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate self-reported changes in physical activity and social support, and to examine the association between physical activity and acculturation, following a one month culturally and linguistically adapted, theory-driven (Social Cognitive Theory and Transtheoretical Model) Internet-based physical activity intervention for Latina adults. Data was collected from Spanish-speaking Latinas (N=24) between the ages of 21-61 years (M=35.17, SD=11.22) enrolled in a web-based physical activity pilot …
Neuroplastic Change In Adults With Hemiparetic Multiple Sclerosis Following Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Chelsey Sterling
Neuroplastic Change In Adults With Hemiparetic Multiple Sclerosis Following Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Chelsey Sterling
All ETDs from UAB
Constraint-Induced Movement (CI) therapy has been found to produce substantial improvements in upper-extremity functioning in both adults and children following damage to the central nervous system (CNS), including stroke, traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy. In addition, structural changes in the sensorimotor cortices and bilateral hippocampi have been observed in both adults and children following CI therapy treatment for upper extremity hemiparesis. Although most research has been conducted in patients with such static injuries as strokes and TBI, clinical efficacy of CI therapy has also been demonstrated in a small number of patients with the progressive autoimmune disorder, multiple sclerosis …
Anatomical And Neurochemical Investigation Of The Brain In Autism, Lauren E. Libero
Anatomical And Neurochemical Investigation Of The Brain In Autism, Lauren E. Libero
All ETDs from UAB
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with widespread behavioral symptoms and a strong neurobiological origin. Neuroimaging studies of ASD have uncovered evidence for widespread abnormalities in brain anatomy and functioning. Abnormalities reported by structural brain imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies have aided in characterizing ASD as a complex, systems-wide disorder. The overarching goal of this project was to use multiple modalities of neuroimaging to investigate the underlying neural mechanisms of ASD. The following techniques were used to collect and analyze multimodal neuroimaging data from a relatively large number of participants …
Investigation Of Lateral Incisor Crown Root Angulation And Impacted Maxillary Canines, Samuel Philip Purnell
Investigation Of Lateral Incisor Crown Root Angulation And Impacted Maxillary Canines, Samuel Philip Purnell
All ETDs from UAB
Objective: The primary aim of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the mesiodistal crown-root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors between patients with impacted maxillary canines and a control population. Secondary aim 1 compared the same angle measured on panoramic radiographs to determine if a difference existed between the CBCT measurement and the panoramic radiograph measurement. Secondary aim 2 looked to determine if there was a correlation between maxillary lateral incisor tooth width and the mesiodistal crown-root angulation. Materials and Methods: CBCT's were reformatted so that the mesiodistal crown-root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors could be …
Coping With Chronic Illness: Temporal Patterns Of Spiritual Coping And Adjustment Among Adolescents With Chronic Illness, Nina Cole Reynolds
Coping With Chronic Illness: Temporal Patterns Of Spiritual Coping And Adjustment Among Adolescents With Chronic Illness, Nina Cole Reynolds
All ETDs from UAB
Issues of spirituality rise to the forefront for youth facing serious health conditions. Positive and negative spiritual coping strategies have been linked with better or worse psychological adjustment, respectively, in pediatric patients. With expansion of research in this area, an empirical synthesis and examination of the prospective relationships between spiritual coping and mental- and physical-health is needed. Accordingly, the first manuscript reports on meta-analytic review of the cross-sectional studies of spiritual coping, health, and psychosocial adjustment. Results revealed that greater use of negative spiritual coping is related to more internalizing problems and poorer quality of life across multiple pediatric illness …
White Matter Integrity In Adults With Hemiparetic Multiple Sclerosis Given Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Tyler Rickards
White Matter Integrity In Adults With Hemiparetic Multiple Sclerosis Given Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Tyler Rickards
All ETDs from UAB
In adults with chronic stroke and children with cerebral palsy, structural changes in grey matter correlate with clinical improvements due to an efficacious upper-extremity (UE) rehabilitation therapy, Constraint-Induced Movement (CI) Therapy. Changes in white matter following CI therapy have not been observed, but damage to white matter tracts has not been found to decrease motor improvement resulting from this treatment. The objectives of this project were to: 1) evaluate the efficacy of CI therapy compared to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments on improving impaired UE function in participants with the progressive form of multiple sclerosis (MS), 2) investigate whether …
