Pattern And Process In Volcano Seismology, John Paul Benoit
Pattern And Process In Volcano Seismology, John Paul Benoit
Theses (Unassigned)
The patterns of occurrence and the underlying processes of two important seismological phenomena at volcanoes, earthquake swarms and volcanic tremor, were investigated. A global database of volcanic earthquake swarm parameters was compiled and was used to evaluate the March 10-14, 1996 seismo-volcanic crisis at Akutan Volcano, Alaska. Earthquake swarm durations and magnitudes were compared with eruptive activity using this database. Trends identified using the database suggest that the Akutan swarm was not precursory and, no eruption occurred. We postulate that a deep instrusion with a large opening component occurred under the flanks of Akutan. The global swarm database has provided …

Surficial Geology And Morphology Of The Alaskan Central Arctic Coastal Plain, Stuart Elbert Rawlinson
Surficial Geology And Morphology Of The Alaskan Central Arctic Coastal Plain, Stuart Elbert Rawlinson
Theses (Unassigned)
Mapping and analyses have defined the distribution, morphology, character, and age of marine, fluvial, glacial, eolian, and lacustrine sediments of the late Cenozoic Gubik Formation in approximately 12,000 km$\sp2$ of the Alaskan central Arctic Coastal Plain, and allowed interpretations of the depositional, climatic, and tectonic histories. Amino-acid analysis of wood and some shell materials has defined broad age groups: young, middle and old. The old group has been abandoned because of probable leaching of acids or other modification. These groups are the basis for correlation of deposits between areas and have been assigned minimum relative ages. The young group is …
Upper Crustal Structure Of Southern Alaska: An Interpretation Of Seismic Refraction Data From The Trans-Alaska Crustal Transect, Lorraine W. Wolf
Upper Crustal Structure Of Southern Alaska: An Interpretation Of Seismic Refraction Data From The Trans-Alaska Crustal Transect, Lorraine W. Wolf
Geosciences
Seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection data from the U.S. Geological Survey's Trans-Alaska Crustal Transect is used to investigate the upper crustal structure of southcentral Alaska. The data consist of two intersecting refraction lines: the 135-km Chugach profile which follows the E-W strike of the Chugach Mountains and the 126-km Cordova Peak profile which follows the N-S regional dip. The four shots of the Chugach profile and the five shots of the Cordova Peak profile were recorded on 120 portable seismic instruments spaced at 1-km intervals. Interpretation of data from the Chugach terrane indicates that near-surface unconsolidated sediment and glacial ice …
Stratigraphy, Petrology, And Depositional Environments Of The Jarvis Creek Coalfield, Alaska, M. Belowich
Stratigraphy, Petrology, And Depositional Environments Of The Jarvis Creek Coalfield, Alaska, M. Belowich
MIRL Report Publications
Jarvis Creek basin coals are subbituminous, low in ash, and increase upsection in moisture, most major oxides and trace elements, and vitrinite with subsequent liptinite and inertinite decreases. Sulfide mineral deposits east-southeast of the basin are responsible for the enrichment of the upper coals in sulfur and metals. Sandstones are quartzose, arkosic, and lithic in the lower, middle, and upper units respectively, and were derived from a recycled orogen provenance. Sediment transport was from the south at the base, shifting to an easterly source higher in the section. Deposition was by braided and meandering streams on mid and distal portions …
Structural Style Of The Laramide Orogeny, Wyoming Foreland. (Volumes I And Ii), William Gregor Brown
Structural Style Of The Laramide Orogeny, Wyoming Foreland. (Volumes I And Ii), William Gregor Brown
Theses (Unassigned)
This study documents the styles of Laramide structures of the Wyoming foreland, and presents an integrated synthesis of foreland development. Theoretical data and experimental results are compared to field observations, subsurface well control, and geophysical data to judge their application to the foreland. The direction of collision (N40-50E) between the North American and Farallon plates represents the direction of maximum compressive stresses during the Laramide orogeny. A "tectonic front" progressed from west to east across the foreland during Campanian to middle Eocene time. No single model of uplift applies throughout the foreland. Dips of basement faults vary with changes in …

Birch Hill Park: A Case Study Of Interpretive Planning, David Combs
Birch Hill Park: A Case Study Of Interpretive Planning, David Combs
Bulletin
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the planning, acquisition, development, improvement, and maintenance of lands and facilities to meet the community's needs for park and open space lands in accordance with established standards. 1 Current department emphasis is on sports facilities and programs. Some small neighborhood parks and the Growden Park and Picnic Area are the only significantly developed areas in which organized sports are not emphasized. Birch Hill Park was acquired to expand the spectrum of recreational resources and opportunities available to borough residents. Cross-country skiing, both competitive and recreational, is an important …

Development Of A Light-Weight Low Cost Self Potential Unit, K.L. Zonge
Development Of A Light-Weight Low Cost Self Potential Unit, K.L. Zonge
MIRL Report Publications
A lightweight, low cost self-potential unit has been developed using solid state components. The parts for the basic unit including batteries, copper sulfate pots, and hookup wire costs approximately $70.00. The device is instant reading and weighs two pounds. The batteries used have a shelf life of ten years and an estimated operation life (based on continuous use for ten hours per day) of sixty days. This instrument was developed specifically for the Alaskan prospector who is concerned with weight and cost of field instrumentation.

Natural Resource Base Of The Fairbanks North Star Borough, E.N. Wolff, R.C. Haring
MIRL Report Publications
This report on the natural resource base of the Fairbanks North Star Borough is one of several continuing research projects related to community planning in Alaska. It represents an interdisciplinary effort of the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory and the Institute of Social, Economic and Government Research at the University of Alaska. The result is a synthesis of the economic development potential of natural resources in the greater Fairbanks region.

Magnetometer And Direct-Current Resistivity Studies In Alaska, Henry R. Joesting
Magnetometer And Direct-Current Resistivity Studies In Alaska, Henry R. Joesting
MIRL Other
During the past year and a half, the territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work, and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitation[s] of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem.
