Thule Plant And Driftwood Use At Cape Espenberg, Alaska, Laura J. Crawford
Thule Plant And Driftwood Use At Cape Espenberg, Alaska, Laura J. Crawford
Anthropology
This thesis addresses the question of Thule plant and woody fuel use at Cape Espenberg, Alaska between approximately AD 1500 and 1700. The objective of this thesis is to determine how the Thule at Cape Espenberg were using various plant species, including edible plant species and fuelwood species. Few studies have been done on prehistoric Arctic plant use, and so this study intends to add to this nascent but growing field. By examining charcoal and macrofossil remains, this thesis is also intended to discover similarities and differences between the Thule and their modern Inupiat descendants in terms of plant and …
Isotopic Dietary Analysis And Molecular Sex Identification Of Adults And Juveniles From Medieval Great Moravia, Carrin M. Halffman
Isotopic Dietary Analysis And Molecular Sex Identification Of Adults And Juveniles From Medieval Great Moravia, Carrin M. Halffman
2012 Research Day Posters
Like many complex agricultural societies, medieval European society was strongly patriarchal, with men favored in terms of property rights, political status, and household authority. However, it is unclear whether male dominance in medieval society was manifested in unequal access to food resources between the sexes. In this pilot study, we examine the pattern of sex-related differences in diet through biomolecular analyses of skeletal remains from Kostelisko, a suburban area within the early medieval Great Moravian site of Mikulčice. Mikulčice was a prominent center of Great Moravia, an early Slavic state that existed in the 9th and early 10th centuries AD, …
Population Structure And Hybridization Of Alaskan Caribou And Reindeer: Integrating Genetics And Local Knowledge, Karen H. Mager
Population Structure And Hybridization Of Alaskan Caribou And Reindeer: Integrating Genetics And Local Knowledge, Karen H. Mager
Biological Sciences
Alaskan caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) are a valued game species and a key grazer in Alaska's terrestrial ecosystem. Caribou herds, defined by female fidelity to calving grounds, are management units. However, the extent to which herds constitute genetic populations is unknown. Historical fluctuations in herd size, range, and distribution suggest periods of contact and isolation between herds. Likewise, historical contact between caribou and introduced domestic reindeer (R.t. tarandus) created opportunities for hybridization, but its extent is not known. I conducted an interdisciplinary study to understand how historical processes influence genetic identity and population structure of caribou and reindeer. Interviews with …
Volcano Deformation And Subdaily Gps Products, Ronni Grapenthin
Volcano Deformation And Subdaily Gps Products, Ronni Grapenthin
Geosciences
Volcanic unrest is often accompanied by hours to months of deformation of the ground that is measurable with high-precision GPS. Although GPS receivers are capable of near continuous operation, positions are generally estimated for daily intervals, which I use to infer characteristics of a volcano's plumbing system. However, GPS based volcano geodesy will not be useful in early warning scenarios unless positions are estimated at high rates and in real time. Visualization and analysis of dynamic and static deformation during the 2011 Tohokuoki earthquake in Japan motivates the application of high-rate GPS from a GPS seismology perspective. I give examples …
Cultural Continuity And Communities And Well-Being, Stephanie Martin
Cultural Continuity And Communities And Well-Being, Stephanie Martin
ISER Articles
This paper describes a household survey of Inuit in northern Alaska and how the survey data were used to better understand the relative importance of jobs, wild food harvesting, and social ties for life satisfaction. It emphasizes the importance of non-material measures for life satisfaction. It builds on other research showing the importance of harvesting wild food and the persistence of a mixed economy—one that combines cash income and wild food harvests. An empirical model estimates the relationship between people's choices to work, and/or hunt and fish, and individual satisfaction with life. The model includes economic and non-economic measures of …

Archaeology At Teklanika West (Hea-001): An Upland Archaeological Site, Central Alaska, Samuel C. Coffman
Archaeology At Teklanika West (Hea-001): An Upland Archaeological Site, Central Alaska, Samuel C. Coffman
Anthropology
This thesis research involved a reinvestigation of the Teklanika West (HEA-001) archaeological site, central Alaska. It focused on understanding and expanding upon the site formation processes, dating, and characterizing cultural components at the site. Analyses were designed to address the preceding research purposes, while inter-relating research objectives. Twelve and a quarter square meters were excavated within five blocks located across the site. These excavation blocks yielded dateable materials in clear association with chipped-stone technology. Both environmental and cultural data obtained at the site have produced a more complex understanding of the site and surrounding landscape. Multiple components ranging in age …
Letters As Literature: Semantic And Discursive Features Of Irony In "Letters To Howard", Corinna Jo Cook
Letters As Literature: Semantic And Discursive Features Of Irony In "Letters To Howard", Corinna Jo Cook
Arctic and Northern Studies
This thesis examines the literary features of the Letters to Howard, a series of letters to the editor of the Alaskan newspaper, the Tundra Times. Published over the course of several months in 1973, the letters were signed by two semi-fictional characters: an old Eskimo man, Naugga Ciunerput, and a lost VISTA volunteer, Wally Morton, the two lone inhabitants of the imagined Land's End Village, Alaska. Naugga and Wally had a pointed agenda: they were addressing editor Howard Rock and his readership with their concerns regarding the newly-passed Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, or ANCSA. In truth, Naugga and Wally's …

Visualizing The Present: Current Issues Within Contemporary Visual Sami Art - An Analysis Of Sami Artists And Their Art In Oslo, Norway, Birte Marie Horn-Hanssen
Arctic and Northern Studies
Until recently, contemporary visual Sami art has been little studied. However there is continuous activity within the Sami art world that is evident from the large amount of contemporary visual Sami art exhibits in northern Scandinavia. This paper provides an exploratory analysis of the current issues and artistic language contemporary visual Sami artists who live in Oslo, Norway are concerned with. Through contextualizing the artworks within a post-colonial framework highlighting the dominant Sami historical, political and societal narratives from the 1970s until now, and contrasting them with the official Norwegian image of Norway as a unified "oil and gas nation," …

Well-Being: The Looking Glass In 4-D, Joey M. Bays
Well-Being: The Looking Glass In 4-D, Joey M. Bays
Communication
Well-being affects all of us. It is intricately interwoven with our identity and interactions. This study explores the relational contexts in which well-being is created, maintained, and diminished. In order to accomplish this goal, three main themes were addressed: (a) the co-researcher's understanding of what well-being is, (b) the co-researcher's understanding of how community affects a person's well-being, and (c) a description of the co-researcher's best of times and worst of times. These phenomenological themes guide the context and process of this research. This study is grounded in the theoretical stance of interpretivism with a constructionism epistemology; the methodology employed …

Margaret Keenan Harrais: A Biography In Four Voices, Sarah Doetschman
Margaret Keenan Harrais: A Biography In Four Voices, Sarah Doetschman
Interdisciplinary Studies
Narrative strategies available to biography are explored through the life of Margaret Keenan Harrais---teacher, educational administrator, judge, and activist. Biography is a particular endeavor requiring flexible inquiry and creative presentation. Margaret is viewed through multiple lenses that explore personhood, encourage readers' introspection, and imply the importance of the individual in history. The four voices indicated in the title of this dissertation are editorial, analytical, sparsely Romantic, and expository. This biography aims to complicate readers' notions of what it means to be a person in relation to other people by focusing closely on selected episodes in Margaret's career; analyzing their historical, …
The Northway Wild Food And Health Project: Confronting The Legacy Of Toxic Waste Along The Alcan, Anna R. Godduhn
The Northway Wild Food And Health Project: Confronting The Legacy Of Toxic Waste Along The Alcan, Anna R. Godduhn
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Northway, Alaska is a small, mostly Athabascan community with a large Formerly Used Defense Site, located near the Alaska Highway in Eastern Interior Alaska. Despite remediation in the 1990s, local residents are concerned about the contamination of wild foods. This Community Based Participatory Research project comprised two studies: the Northway Wild Food Study, to investigate contaminant levels in locally prioritized traditional foods; and the Northway Health Study, to investigate locally suspected links between historic pollution sources and health problems. The project identifies multiple pathways of exposure that were more significant in the past, including a clear water creek, whitefish, a …
Reading Comprehension Strategies In Children With High-Functioning Autism: A Social Constructivist Perspective, June Ann Cotter
Reading Comprehension Strategies In Children With High-Functioning Autism: A Social Constructivist Perspective, June Ann Cotter
Communication
Individuals with autism see the world, by definition of the diagnosis, in a very different way than the typical student. Communication, both verbal and non-verbal, is a defining characteristic of this disability. Students with autism both can and need to learn to comprehend when reading to be successful in school and in life. This study evaluated the reading comprehension abilities of three students with autism and using a strength-based approach targeting comprehension strategies. These strategies also appear to have increased the students' communication skills. All participants were medically or educationally diagnosed with autism. All had an educationally-defined label of autism …

Micromorphology, Site Spatial Variation And Patterning, And Climate Change At The Mead Site (Xbd-071): A Multi-Component Archaeological Site In Interior Alaska, Phoebe J. Gilbert
Anthropology
The Mead Site, located in the Tanana River Valley in Interior Alaska, is a deeply buried archaeology site with multiple occupations and excellent preservation. The site provides a rare opportunity to study the human/climate relationship in prehistory. Magnetic susceptibility, micromorphology, geochemical and spatial analysis were utilized to (I) determine the amount of post-depositional disturbance at the site, (2) see if there are detectable buried surfaces that indicate cultural occupation in the upper sratigraphic layers and, (3) investigate the paleosols at the site and determine if the occupations at the site correlate with ameliorating climate. The results show that the upper …
Genetic Ancestry Modeling And Performance Association In The Alaskan Sled Dog, Heather Jay Huson
Genetic Ancestry Modeling And Performance Association In The Alaskan Sled Dog, Heather Jay Huson
Biological Sciences
Alaskan sled dogs present us with the unique opportunity to study the development of a population of dogs produced from the selective breeding of high performance athletes. I establish that sled dogs are a genetically distinct population of dogs that segregate into two sub-groups based on their racing style of "sprint" or short distance and "distance" or long distance. The practice of interbreeding Alaskan sled dogs with various purebred dogs over the past century has allowed us to investigate the impact of these domestic breeds on the sled dog genome and their potential contribution to athletic performance. Here, I establish …
Alaska Shorefast Ice: Interfacing Geophysics With Local Sea Ice Knowledge And Use, Matthew L. Druckenmiller
Alaska Shorefast Ice: Interfacing Geophysics With Local Sea Ice Knowledge And Use, Matthew L. Druckenmiller
Geosciences
This thesis interfaces geophysical techniques with local and traditional knowledge (LTK) of indigenous ice experts to track and evaluate coastal sea ice conditions over annual and inter-annual timescales. A novel approach is presented for consulting LTK alongside a systematic study of where, when, and how the community of Barrow, Alaska uses the ice cover. The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of and abilities to monitor the processes that govern the state and dynamics of shorefast sea ice in the Chukchi Sea and use of ice by the community. Shorefast ice stability and community strategies for safe …
