Exploring Paradox In The Local Foods Movement: Challenges In Uniting Ideology And Practice, Justin Schupp, Rebecca Som Castellano Jun 2015

Exploring Paradox In The Local Foods Movement: Challenges In Uniting Ideology And Practice, Justin Schupp, Rebecca Som Castellano

Justin Schupp

Throughout the United States, there is a discernible movement towards a more localized food system. Asserting that movement practices can minimize detrimental effects to the environment while providing benefits to human nutrition, community well being and social justice, those promoting food system localization engage in practices which aim to resist the globalizing and industrializing food and agriculture system. Despite these aims, however, the discourses and practices of the movement could be veiling inequalities which limit opportunity for participation in food system localization. Many scholars have pointed theoretically to the ways in which food system localization is not a priori more …

Integrated Analysis Of Content And Construct Validity, Byron Gajewski, Larry Price, Valorie Coffland, Diane Boyle, Marjorie Bott

Diane Kay Boyle PhD, RN, FAAN

Establishing adequacy of psychometric properties of an instrument involves acquisition and evaluation of evidence based on item content and internal structure. Content validity evidence consists of subject matter experts providing quantitative ratings of the extent to which items are a representative sample of targeted domain. Evidence of internal structure includes factor analytic studies and examination of item interrelationships based on item responses from participants. Although subject matter expert ratings and participant response data are traditionally analyzed separately, each serves to inform the other in important ways. We propose integrating subject matter experts’ and participants’ data seamlessly to establish a unified …

Economic And Social Impacts Of Wildfires And Invasive Plants In American Deserts: Lessons From The Great Basin, Mark Brunson, John Tanaka Oct 2014

Economic And Social Impacts Of Wildfires And Invasive Plants In American Deserts: Lessons From The Great Basin, Mark Brunson, John Tanaka

John A Tanaka

Research on the impacts of wildfire and invasive plants in rangelands has focused on biophysical rather than human dimensions of these environmental processes. We offer a synthetic perspective on economic and social aspects of wildfire and invasive plants in American deserts, focusing on the Great Basin because greater research attention has been given to the effects of cheatgrass expansion than to other desert wildfire/invasion cycles. We focus first on impacts at the level of the individual decision-maker, then on impacts experienced at the human community or larger socio-political scales. Economic impacts of wildfire differ from those of invasive grasses because …

Chapter 9. A Social And Economic Assessment Of Rangeland Conservation Practices, John Tanaka, Mark Brunson, L. Allen Torell

John A Tanaka

In this chapter, we examine the literature related to the economic and social aspects of ecosystem services impacted by the conservation practices of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of prescribed grazing, prescribed burning, brush management, upland wildlife habitat, riparian management, and range planting. In addition, we examine the social and economic aspects of invasive species management that cross different conservation practices...

Upon entering the new millennium, the University of Wyoming Libraries have expanded traditional one-shot library instruction and desk-bound reference into a suite of embedded services including reference, instruction, and curriculum and general education planning. Increased enrollment, along with increases in librarian consultations and instruction, have provided opportunities for innovation. Growing numbers of online students at the university encourage librarians to hone distance services and to experiment with new delivery methods. Librarians take care to follow both the ACRL guidelines for information literacy at the academy as well as the best practices for serving distance learners. Both distance and on-campus reference …

Genome-Scale Dynamics Modeling Of The Competition Between Rhodoferax And Geobacter In Anoxic Subsurface Environments, Derek Lovley, Kai Zhuang, Mounir Izallalen, Paula Museor, Hanno Richter, Carla Risso, Radhakrishnan Mahadevan Apr 2012

Genome-Scale Dynamics Modeling Of The Competition Between Rhodoferax And Geobacter In Anoxic Subsurface Environments, Derek Lovley, Kai Zhuang, Mounir Izallalen, Paula Museor, Hanno Richter, Carla Risso, Radhakrishnan Mahadevan

Carla Risso

The advent of rapid complete genome sequencing, and the potential to capture this information in genome-scale metabolic models, provide the possibility of comprehensively modeling microbial community interactions. For example, Rhodoferax and Geobacter species are acetate-oxidizing Fe(III)-reducers that compete in anoxic subsurface environments and this competition may have an influence on the in situ bioremediation of uranium-contaminated groundwater. Therefore, genome-scale models of Geobacter sulfurreducens and Rhodoferax ferrireducens were used to evaluate how Geobacter and Rhodoferax species might compete under diverse conditions found in a uranium-contaminated aquifer in Rifle, CO. The model predicted that at the low rates of acetate flux expected …

Ischemia–Reperfusion Impairs Blood–Brain Barrier Function And Alters Tight Junction Protein Expression In The Ovine Fetus, X. Chen, S. W. Threlkeld, E. E. Cummings, I. Juan, O. Makeyev, W. G. Besio, J. Gaitanis, W. A. Banks, G. B. Sadowska, B. S. Stonestreet Dec 2011

Ischemia–Reperfusion Impairs Blood–Brain Barrier Function And Alters Tight Junction Protein Expression In The Ovine Fetus, X. Chen, S. W. Threlkeld, E. E. Cummings, I. Juan, O. Makeyev, W. G. Besio, J. Gaitanis, W. A. Banks, G. B. Sadowska, B. S. Stonestreet

Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The blood–brain barrier is a restrictive interface between the brain parenchyma and the intravascular compartment. Tight junctions contribute to the integrity of the blood–brain barrier. Hypoxic–ischemic damage to the blood–brain barrier could be an important component of fetal brain injury. We hypothesized that increases in blood–brain barrier permeability after ischemia depend upon the duration of reperfusion and that decreases in tight junction proteins are associated with the ischemia-related impairment in blood–brain barrier function in the fetus. Blood–brain barrier function was quantified with the blood-to-brain transfer constant (Ki) and tight junction proteins by Western immunoblot in fetal sheep …

Effects Of Response Elaboration Training On Sentence Production Of Persons With Chronic Agrammatic Aphasia, Ryan S. Husak Dec 2011

Effects Of Response Elaboration Training On Sentence Production Of Persons With Chronic Agrammatic Aphasia, Ryan S. Husak

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Purpose: Response Elaboration Training (RET) is a treatment program for increasing the amount of information contained in the speech of individuals with aphasia. This study employed a sentence production task (SPT) to examine whether RET will (1) generalize to a task not worked on in treatment and (2) affect syntactic performance.

Methods and Procedures: Three adults with chronic non-fluent Broca’s aphasia received RET in this prospective, repeated case study. The dependent variable was a SPT requiring the participant to put a verb in a sentence. Changes in the syntactic performance of the participant’s sentence productions were classified across …

Development Of Delayed Splenic Rupture In A Patient With Cervical Cord Injury: A Casereport, Yiu-Chung Lau, Chau-Peng Leong, Yi-Jung Hsin, Tsung-Hsun Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This is a report of a 65-year-old male patient with incomplete spinal cord injury caused by a traffic accident. He was robust prior to this injury. He was hospitalized due to tetraplegia caused by the accident, and did not lose consciousness at the time of injury. A cervical spine MRI was performed and showed cervical spondylosis with a C4-5, C5-6 herniated intervertebral disc. After decompressive surgery, he was transferred to our ward for inpatient rehabilitation, where balance and exercise activities on a mattress were carried out regularly. After 20 days of rehabilitation, acute dyspnea, abdominal distension and unstable vital signs …

Foot Pain Related Factors For Nursing Aides At Long-Term Care Institutions: A Preliminary Study, Chien-Hua Huang, Won-Tin Chang, Chun Pei, Chih-Chin Hsieh, Shu-Chuan Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Nursing aides at long-term care institutions need to stand and walk all day. As a result, the average burden of lower limbs for nursing aides is greater than nurses was. Feet have to bear the bodies weight as well as for support, shock absorption, and wear and tear from walking. This study investigated major factors of foot pain as caused by functional activities or the abnormal foot structures from prolonged standing and walking due to work. The participants were nursing aides at a special education school in central Taiwan. The first questionnaire gathered foot pain history for the previous three …
