Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Vibrating Niti Guidewire, Graham Gavin
Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Vibrating Niti Guidewire, Graham Gavin
Conference Papers
Minimally invasive interventions often utilise slender wires to access and navigate to target sites. These guidewires act as rails, facilitating access for other therapies. In endovascular procedures, the guidewires facilitate angioplasty balloons, stenting and other dilation procedures. Due to their small profile and flexibility, endovascular guidewires have limited ability to transfer forces to their tip and as a result cannot penetrate hard calcified blockages, commonly referred to as chronic total occlusions (CTOs) [1-2]. One method proposed to overcome this limitation is the application of vibrations to the wire. The vibrations are transmitted along the length of the wire to the …

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects millions globally, with over 21 million cases reported in the U.S. in 2020. It occurs when leg arteries become narrowed or blocked, leading to complications like critical limb ischemia, where blood flow is severely restricted. Standard treatments, such as bypass surgery and endovascular procedures, aim to restore blood flow. However, advanced chronic total occlusions with calcified plaques, often prevent flexible guidewires crossing into the true lumen of the distal vessel, accounting for approximately 80% of procedural failure. The use of high-frequency (20- 50 kHz) mechanical vibrations (0-50 μm) delivered to the distal tip of specialist …

Application Of Positive Matrix Factorization For Source Identification And Bioaccumulation Modelling In Urban Soil–Plant Systems, Volodymyr Laptiev, Michelle Giltrap, Furong Tian, Nataliia Nataliia Ryzhenko
SAML-25 Workshop on Statistical and Machine Learning
Understanding the dynamics of heavy metal accumulation in soil–plant systems is essential for addressing urban environmental risks, particularly in post-industrial and post-conflict settings. This study presents a novel application of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) as a core statistical tool for identifying pollution sources and modelling the transfer of trace metals in the urban environment of Dnipro, Ukraine. The PMF model was applied to a dataset combining concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Cd, Hg, and particulate matter (PM) in air. Results were further integrated with bioaccumulation and translocation indices calculated for two indicator species—Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and Erigeron canadensis …

Quantity Surveying students are required to study a vast spectrum of modules during their programme of study. Perhaps one of the most important taught modules on a Quantity Surveying programme and a core professional competency relates to building measurement. Many early stage quantity surveying students are introduced to building measurement via the concept of manual take-off which offers students a good grounding in the basic skills and good practices required to successfully measure a building project. However, manual measurement ultimately is no longer used in practice in any meaningful capacity and teaching it is a time-consuming process. The research explores …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Advancements in information technology have supported the open availability of environmental monitoring datasets to aid global initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Despite these efforts, challenges concerning data quality and adherence to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles continue to restrict the effective reuse of such datasets, particularly for secondary applications. This study uses the F-UJI assessment tool and a set of eight established DQ dimensions to evaluate the FAIRness and Data Quality (DQ) of four publicly available urban air quality monitoring datasets from international agencies. Each dataset was assessed against 17 FAIR metrics and …

Multi-Objective Deep Reinforcement Learning For Dynamic Algorithm Selection In Open Ran, Saish Urumkar, Byrav Ramamurthy, Sachin Sharma
Conference papers
Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) provide flexible, modular multi-vendor interoperability. Growing mobile data demand requires balancing network performance with power efficiency. Mobile operators need intelligent resource management to achieve Key Performance Indicator (KPI) targets while maintaining operational efficiency. This paper proposes a solution using a multi-objective deep reinforcement learning (MODRL) model deployed on the Open RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). Three customizable operator profiles (Power Saving, Balanced, and Performance) are used which define specific priority ratios between performance and power saving objectives.
To evaluate, individual algorithms (CPU scheduling and UE connection state switching) are implemented in Open RAN, achieving 5–20%CPU …

Open RAN is a next-generation wireless network technology that promotes flexibility, cost efficiency, and interoperability through disaggregation and open interfaces. Energy efficiency remains a key challenge, especially in scalable deployments with many connected User Equipments (UEs), where dynamic power management at the gNodeB is critical. In this paper PAC-ORAN (Power-saving Adaptive CPU Scheduling for Open RAN) is proposed which is an advanced CPU scheduling algorithm evaluated with a large number of connected UEs to gNodeb. PAC-ORAN includes an advanced method using moving average adaptive threshold selection and dynamically adjusting CPU core states and frequency tuning based on real-time CPU metrics. …

Sustainable Enzymatic Extraction Of High-Purity Chitin From Button Mushroom (Agaricus Bisporus) Off-Production Waste: Influence Of Alkaline Pre-Treatment On Physicochemical Properties, Buliyaminu A. Alimi, Shivani Pathania, Jude Wilson, Brendan Duffy, Jesus Maria Frias
Articles
This study investigated chitin extraction from the stalks and atypical mushrooms, the often-produced waste in the mushroom production process, using a simultaneous application of protease and glucanase with or without an alkaline pretreatment stage. A commercial chitin, chemically extracted from A. bisporus was used as the control. The purity of extracted chitin (98.92–99.36 %) was slightly lower than commercial chitin (99.80 %), but with comparable physicochemical properties (p < 0.05). All enzymatically extracted chitin in this study exhibited an agglomerated, microfibrillar and irregular structure, while the control showed standalone granules with weathering and cracks on the surfaces. The XRD and FTIR spectra indicated that the extracted chitin and the control belong to the α-allotrope group. The degree of acetylation was higher in the extracted chitin (76.97–78.22 %) than in the control (75.05 %). The highest molecular weight obtained for the extracted chitin was 4.53 × 102 KDa (W0548). The study demonstrated the possibility of producing pure, high molecular weight chitin from the waste produced during the commercial production of button mushrooms, using a potentially more sustainable approach than the traditional one. This enzymatic approach reduces chemical waste, as shown by the excellent results obtained for samples without the pre-treatment stage, and improves environmental safety compared to traditional methods.

Multi-Level Explainability In Radiomic-Based Classification Of Multiple Sclerosis And Ischemic Lesions, Nighat Bibi, Kathleen M. Curran, Ronan P. Killeen, Jane Courtney
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Differentiating multiple sclerosis (MS) from ischemic stroke lesions on MRI remains a clinical challenge due to their similar appearances as white matter hyperintensities. We propose a radiomics-based machine learning framework that integrates multi-level explainable AI (XAI) techniques to support transparent and clinically meaningful lesion classification. Radiomic features are extracted from standardized MRI scans and used to train multiple classifiers, with Random Forest achieving the best performance (accuracy: 91.24%, F1: 86.54%). The framework incorporates four complementary explanation layers: global insights using SHAP, local interpretability via LIME, counterfactual reasoning with DiCE, and clinical narrative generation using GPT-based language models. This layered approach …

A Post-Normal Environment-Centered Approach To Engineering Ethics Education, T Børsen, Shannon Chance, G Meskens
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This chapter probes engineering responses to contemporary socio-ecological challenges – like climate change and loss of biodiversity – and advocates for a new, post-normal engineering (PNE) paradigm. The chapter promotes cultivating, via reflection and dialogue, a nuanced ethical understanding for grappling with urgent socio-ecological problems, underscoring the need for a diverse palette of ethical frameworks for current and future engineers. The proposed PNE paradigm rejects today's conventional engineering practices and extractive cradle-to-grave model, prioritizing global responsibility and advocating for reflexivity in constructing new approaches to complex present-day issues. Existing theories like virtue ethics and utilitarianism (covered elsewhere in this handbook) …

volume Holographic Optical Elements (VHOE) are being developed for use in image combiners and waveguide couplers within the near eye display(NED). VHOEs have the potential to replace conventional geometric optics and can perform multiple functions in a lightweight thin layer, depending on the recorded hologram design. However, due to high dispersion and the angular and spectral selectivity of VHOEs, bespoke solutions are needed for every new system design and it is important to be able to fabricate at a given recording wavelength (with available lasers) regardless of the intended operating wavelength of the VHOE. To alleviate the problem, we have …
