Walking To Be Some Body: Desire And Diaspora On The St. Olaf Way, Matthew R. Anderson Mar 2019

Walking To Be Some Body: Desire And Diaspora On The St. Olaf Way, Matthew R. Anderson

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In ‘Walking to Be Some Body’ Matthew R. Anderson uses the example of North American Scandinavian-background pilgrims walking Norway’s St. Olaf Way to parse the yearning of contemporary diaspora pilgrims who walk repristinated routes along ancient paths toward real or imagined homelands. These travellers literally incarnate contemporary tensions between the religious and the non-religious, the journey and the destination, and between the rootlessness of modern global tourism and the rootedness longed for in community and patrimony.

Factors Affecting Non-Attendance In Irish Primary Schools And Reasons For Differences Between Urban And Rural Levels Of Non-Attendance, Anne Marie Gurhy, Glen Perry, Mark Farrell Jan 2018

Factors Affecting Non-Attendance In Irish Primary Schools And Reasons For Differences Between Urban And Rural Levels Of Non-Attendance, Anne Marie Gurhy, Glen Perry, Mark Farrell

Reports

This study will investigative the factors that influence school non-attendance, in designated disadvantaged Irish primary schools (DEIS1). Currently, no comprehensive data exists on the factors contributing to the levels and types of non-attendance within the Irish context. Since 2003/2004, the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB, Appendix A) the agency with responsibility for school attendance, has collected specific data on attendance levels and the frequency of non-attendance across all Irish schools. However, this does not provide information at the individual student level (NEWB, 2007).

Enhancing Feedback: Key Issues And Solutions From The Literature To Help New Lecturers In Higher Education, Sheona Foley, Jennie Hussey, Theresa Hedderman, Jaiswal Amit, Rahim Aneel Jan 2018

Enhancing Feedback: Key Issues And Solutions From The Literature To Help New Lecturers In Higher Education, Sheona Foley, Jennie Hussey, Theresa Hedderman, Jaiswal Amit, Rahim Aneel

Practitioner Research Projects

The National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030 highlights that whilst modularisation has allowed for greater flexibility, it has also produced some problems including fragmentation of programmes with large numbers of modules leaving students feeling over assessed and staff burdened (Hunt, 2011). Nicol & Macfarlene-Dick (2006) have argued that formative assessment can promote better student learning and that assessment can be used more effectively by embedding ‘feedback’ and ‘feedforward’ in curriculum practices. Their studies identify how formative feedback does not have to solely come from the teacher, but can also be provided by peers and even generated by the students …

Themes In The Supervision Of Social Care Students In Ireland: Building Resilience, Fiona Mcsweeney Aug 2017

Themes In The Supervision Of Social Care Students In Ireland: Building Resilience, Fiona Mcsweeney

Articles

The field placement is core to the education of social care practitioners and practice teachers’ behaviours influence the learning and development of future practitioners. However the practice teacher role is complex with responsibilities to the agency, clients and the student (Davys & Beddoe, 2000). Twenty practice teachers were interviewed individually about their views of their role, in particular what they saw as most and least important. Inductive thematic analysis resulted in the identification of five themes 1) the nature of the work; 2) acceptance of individuality; 3) commonality and differences from staff; 4) focus on positives and 5) practice involves …

Volunteering In The Religious Heritage: Protection, Valorization And Mediation In Italy And France, Giovanna Rech Jun 2017

Volunteering In The Religious Heritage: Protection, Valorization And Mediation In Italy And France, Giovanna Rech

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

In Europe, voluntary work in cultural heritage is a debated but also crucial phenomenon which involves both young and retired people (VOCH 2008; Hustinx et al 2015). Volunteers carry out many activities related to caring and watching but also welcoming and guiding the attendance in these sites and institutions. In Italy, a large interest for the relation between religious heritage and tourism is not so recent but specific projects only dates back to the end of twentieth century even though this country owns one of the richest heritage in the world. In France, the Catholic church has launched a pastoral …

The Italian Museums Of Shrines. Specificities And Relations With Pilgrimage, Lorenzo Bagnoli, Rita Capurro

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

Italy is a country very rich of Shrines in all her regions, destinations of more or less important local pilgrimages. A lot of them have a specific museum deeply connected with the sacred place and its history. The aim of this research is to verify in which way visiting one of those museums is part of the pilgrimage itself, and in which way it is possible to find a link between the religious identity of the pilgrims and the cultural content of the museum. A few case-studies, chosen among museums of little dimensions and representative of different Italian regions, will …

The Patient Survey Programme: Transforming The Patient Experience In Irish Healthcare, Vivienne Byers, D. Fahey, C. Mullins, C. Roe Jan 2017

The Patient Survey Programme: Transforming The Patient Experience In Irish Healthcare, Vivienne Byers, D. Fahey, C. Mullins, C. Roe

Articles

For more than a decade, health policy in Ireland has pushed the centrality of the patient in the delivery and management of healthcare services, including the development of a National Strategy for Service User Involvement in the Health Service 2008–2013 (Health Service Executive, 2008). More recently, the need to provide a ‘patientcentred’ (Department of Health, 2012, 2013, 2014) or ‘person-centred’ (Department of Health, 2016) service has been a guiding principle of health policy documents. The National Service Plan 2017 (Health Service Executive, 2016) also outlines the importance of increasing the rates of service user engagement and feedback across the health …

"The Wild East" In Contemporary German Poetry: Gerald Zschorsch, Kurt Drawert, Brigitte Oleschinski, Sabine Egger Dec 2016

"The Wild East" In Contemporary German Poetry: Gerald Zschorsch, Kurt Drawert, Brigitte Oleschinski, Sabine Egger

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language

This article discusses images of a “European” or “Wild” East in German poetry after 1989, specifically the work of Gerald Zschorsch, Kurt Drawert and Brigitte Oleschinski. Do their texts confirm or challenge a dichotomy with a long tradition in German and Western European thought, by juxtaposing “Germany” or “Europe” and this “East”, or by aesthetically transcending such a dichotomy? How do their aesthetics open perspectives on inter- or transcultural movement beyond existing ideas of regional, national and European identities in an increasingly globalized world? Focusing on place, space and movement, the article addresses Centre-Periphery dynamics from a new angle. While …

Ritual Journeys In North America: Opening Religious And Ritual Landscapes And Spaces, Daniel H. Olsen Jun 2016

Ritual Journeys In North America: Opening Religious And Ritual Landscapes And Spaces, Daniel H. Olsen

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The religious landscape of North America is different from other regions of the world in that not only is there a lack of a highly visible religious elements, but also the idea and practice of pilgrimage and ritual travel is not as pervasive as in Europe and Asia. However, there are many human-built and natural spaces marked by Roman Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Indigenous peoples, and members of other faiths which are subject to either formal or informal pilgrimage-like travel. Visits to these sacred sites have intensified with the rise and expansion of tourism after World War II, conflating pilgrimage-like travel …

Making The Experiences Of The Emerging Practitioner More Visible: Social Care Students’ Preparedness And Anticipations For Practice, Fiona Mcsweeney, David Williams Apr 2016

Making The Experiences Of The Emerging Practitioner More Visible: Social Care Students’ Preparedness And Anticipations For Practice, Fiona Mcsweeney, David Williams

Other resources

In the context of increased managerialism as well as reduced resources in social services organisation employers want students ‘properly prepared’ for practice (Frost, Höjer & Campanini, 2013). However research has suggested that there are differences in the way knowledge is understood and used between educational institutions and the workplace. Symes and McIntyre (2000) and Higgins (2014) proposed knowledge in the former setting is explicit and thus can be “formulated and textualised” (Symes & McIntyre, 2000, p.3) and centres around a critical engagement with knowledge, while in the workplace what is known cannot always be articulated and is used to get …

Commuting Versus Resident Students: Differences In Irish Student Engagement, Social And Living Conditions Based On Place Of Residence, Brian Gormley

Support services (Former ITT) - Other Resources

This is the first study into resident students and commuter students in Ireland and was carried out to facilitate a more informed and targeted approach to supporting specific student groups. The research is based on secondary data analysis of three national Eurostudent surveys undertaken in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Four different student cohorts were studied to examine differences in their living and social conditions and their levels of student engagement. The cohorts were: resident students; those living with their parents; renters; and home-owners. Much of the previous research into student residential arrangements has taken place in the US, and this …

An Understanding Of Student Satisfaction, Lorraine Sweeney Sep 2015

An Understanding Of Student Satisfaction, Lorraine Sweeney

Dissertations

Retention is a challenge for all third level institutions and retention rates remain higher than colleges would like them to be, this has intensified in recent years as participants in higher education has increased and diversified. Third level institutions which would not only benefit from increased fees but also through low cost word of mouth promotion and an enhanced reputation. As such, an important concern for colleges is retaining students and understanding the reasons why students may choose to leave a program. While student satisfaction and retention is a well researched topic there remains questions to be answered in terms …

Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo Jul 2015

Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Sacred spaces are, and have always been, places of reception: hospitality is in fact a precept of God. Many biblical passages remind us of this, such as the one (Gen 18, 4-5) in which Abraham welcomes three guests, washes their feet and offers them a piece of bread and a place to rest under a tree. Saint Benedict too, in chapter 53 of the Rule, insisted on the need to honour pilgrims and travellers, who should be welcomed with a charitable service ready for devotion and stated that all guests who entered the monastery should be received as …

Migration, Alan Hilliard

Articles

Third level Chaplains often come across students who have been trafficked or have made hazardous journies to find a new future. The migrant gives us a view on the world that challenges the status-quo and out inherited world view. Theirs is a valuable insight and is indeed prophetic.

Religious Tourism And Tv Serials: The Case Of Two Italian Papal Birthplaces, Lorenzo Bagnoli, Rita Capurro Dec 2014

Religious Tourism And Tv Serials: The Case Of Two Italian Papal Birthplaces, Lorenzo Bagnoli, Rita Capurro

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In this paper the authors examine two of Italy’s lesser religious tourism destinations: Sotto il Monte and Concesio, small towns in northern Italy which have the distinction of being the birthplaces of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. In 2002 and 2008 respectively, two of the country’s national television networks broadcast during prime time short television serials dedicated to the two popes. Despite being very successful with the viewing public, the serials proved to have little impact in terms of tourism, as demonstrated by comprehensive tourist surveys and in-depth conversations with the parties concerned. The aim of the present …

Migration, A Sign Of The Times: A Framework For A Pastoral Care Response, Alan J. Hilliard

Conference Papers

Migration, a Sign of the Times – A Framework for a Pastoral Care Response.

Migration is a sign of the times we live in It has been described as ‘the orphan of the global institutional architecture’[1]. However the letter introducing the document Erga Migrantes Caritas Christi signed by the Prefect of the Congregation asserts that migration as well as being a ‘sign of the times’ is also a ‘sign of the presence of God in history and in the community of peoples’. This paper identifies many of the issues that emerge in the pastoral care of migrants from …

A Qualitative Study Of Workplace Stress And Coping In Secondary Teachers In Ireland, Robert A. Kerr, Jessica Breen, Mary Delaney, Claire Kelly, Kristen Miller Jan 2011

A Qualitative Study Of Workplace Stress And Coping In Secondary Teachers In Ireland, Robert A. Kerr, Jessica Breen, Mary Delaney, Claire Kelly, Kristen Miller

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Teacher stress has received scant attention in Ireland. This study examines teachers’ perceptions of their daily stresses and how they attempt to cope with such situations. Interviews were conducted with fifteen secondary teachers from a variety of school types in eastern Ireland. The teachers showed great concern for their students, with some being prepared to ignore school guidelines in order to deal with their pupils’ needs. Several particularly stressful factors were identified, including the maintenance of boundaries (especially when dealing with students with personal problems), dealing with disruptive student behaviour, and the heavy workload. These stresses closely mirrored those described …

Early School Leaving : An Exploration Of The Factors Contributing To School Non-Completion, Jennifer Mcgarr Sep 2010

Early School Leaving : An Exploration Of The Factors Contributing To School Non-Completion, Jennifer Mcgarr

Dissertations

This study is of an explorative nature, investigating early school leaving in Ireland today. Despite a range of interventions to address school non-completion, approximately 14% of students (as of 2007) continue to leave school without completing their education every year (Byrne & Smyth, 2010). A disproportionate amount of these young people come from disadvantaged backgrounds (Barnardos, 2006). Education is a powerful predicator of life chances and opportunities. Those who leave school with little or no formal education have less opportunities in later life, are more likely to be unemployed, have lower levels of general health and are at a greater …
