Hatchability And Nestling Viability In An Extremely Short-Beaked Pigeon Breed, Türker Savaş, Hakan Erdem, Cemi̇l Tölü
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The selection of hobby animals for breeding by enthusiasts is often based on aesthetic considerations, which can have a negative impact on the animals’ biology. Furthermore, “extreme traits” that deviate from ancestral norms, such as short beaks in pigeons, can be detrimental to the animal’s welfare. Beaks perform many essential functions, such as facilitating feed intake and eggshell breaking. The present study investigates possible hatching problems and the nestling viability of short-beak pigeons through a study of the breeding records of Mısıri (short beak), Baska (medium beak), and Turkish Dönek (normal beak) pigeons, as well as data from one breeding …
Human Bone Marrow-Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation Into Brain-Like Endothelial Cells, Yomna Soliman, Güli̇n Baran, Nur Mustafaoğlu
Human Bone Marrow-Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation Into Brain-Like Endothelial Cells, Yomna Soliman, Güli̇n Baran, Nur Mustafaoğlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs), which constitute the blood–brain barrier (BBB), are essential for maintaining central nervous system homeostasis. Like BMECs, multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) originate from the mesodermal lineage. Thus, MSCs may serve as a direct and efficient cellular source for BMEC-like differentiation. Notably, differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into BMECs typically involves a 2-step protocol: inducing mesodermal commitment followed by endothelial specification. In contrast, direct differentiation from MSCs could bypass the initial mesodermal induction step, offering a streamlined alternative. This study tested a novel strategy for differentiating MSCs into brain-like endothelial cells (BLECs), …

Structure–Activity Modeling And Hybrid Machine Learning-Based Prediction Of Bioactivity In Pyrazole Derivatives For Drug Discovery Applications, Kader Şahi̇n, Serhat Kiliçarslan, Serdar Durdaği, Emi̇n Saripinar
Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Pyrazole derivatives are of growing interest due to their diverse pharmacological activities. However, their biological activity is often highly sensitive to subtle structural modifications. Existing quantitative structure–activity relationships (QSAR) approaches frequently fail to capture the conformational flexibility and nonlinear structure–activity relationships (SAR) of such heterocyclic scaffolds, creating a gap in the accurate prediction of their biological profiles. Therefore, there is a strong need for more robust and predictive computational frameworks. This study addresses this gap by integrating four-dimensional (4D)-QSAR descriptors with hybrid machine learning (ML) techniques to improve predictive accuracy and provide a more reliable tool for structure-based drug …

Quenching-Based Electrochemiluminescence Detection Of Chlorpyrifos Using A Portable Sensor Platform, Emre Dokuzparmak
Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphate pesticide extensively used in agriculture, posing significant threats to human health due to its neurotoxic effects. Its presence in food products has raised considerable public health concerns, necessitating the development of rapid, sensitive, and reliable detection methods. This study aims to design and validate an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor platform operating via a quenching-based mechanism to enable ultrasensitive detection of CPF in food matrices.
Materials and methods: The sensing strategy exploits the coreactant mechanism between 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol (DBAE) and [Ru(bpy)₃]²+ (tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II)), wherein CPF suppresses the ECL emission by interfering with the excited-state electron transfer pathway. The …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Limited drug development and increased antibiotic tolerance among Gram-negative bacteria have led researchers to consider combination therapy. Actinomycin derivatives, particularly actinomycin D, exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, including antibacterial effects. However, actinomycin D is less effective against Gram-negative pathogens. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate the synergy of actinomycin D and its derivatives with clinically known antibiotics against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and investigate the effects on cellular morphology.
Materials and methods: Streptomyces parvus 35M1 isolated from coastal sediment in İzmir/Türkiye was identified via genome sequencing. Large-scale (30 L) fermentation followed by chromatographic purification yielded compounds 1 (actinomycin …

Transcriptomic Identification And Developmental Mapping Of Nrg3b Expression In Zebrafish, Elham Tarahomi, Nuray Soğünmez Erdoğan
Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Neuregulin 3 (NRG3) is an epidermal growth factor-like ligand that is involved in neuronal circuit formation in mammals. However, the expression profile of its zebrafish ortholog, nrg3b, remains poorly defined. The transcriptomic analyses of zebrafish sco-spondin mutants, which display alterations in their neurodevelopmental pathways, have indicated potential dysregulation of Nrg3b. Guided by these insights, this study aimed to characterize the temporal and spatial expression patterns of nrg3b in vivo in embryonic and adult zebrafish.
Materials and methods: Publicly available RNA-seq data from heterozygous and maternal-zygotic zebrafish sco-spondin mutants at 5, 15, and 30 days postfertilization (dpf) were analyzed to …

Symmetric Orthogonalization And Probabilistic Weights In Resource Quantification, Gökhan Torun
Symmetric Orthogonalization And Probabilistic Weights In Resource Quantification, Gökhan Torun
Turkish Journal of Physics
Transforming nonorthogonal bases into orthogonal ones often compromises essential properties or physical meaning in quantum systems. Here, we demonstrate that Löwdin symmetric orthogonalization (LSO) outperforms the widely used Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization (GSO) in characterizing and quantifying quantum resources, with particular emphasis on coherence and superposition. We employ LSO both to construct an orthogonal basis from a nonorthogonal one and to obtain a nonorthogonal basis from an orthogonal set, thereby mitigating ambiguity related to the basis choice in defining quantum coherence. Unlike GSO, which depends on the ordering of input states, LSO applies a symmetric transformation that treats all vectors equally and …
Optical Textures Of A Uniform Liquid Crystal Lattice: Monte Carlo Simulations With Newton Colors And Mueller Matrix Analysis, Yakup Emül
Turkish Journal of Physics
The optical textures of a uniform liquid crystal (LC) molecule lattice structure were explored through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, combined with Mueller matrix (MM) formalism and Newton’s color theory. These simulations utilized a Lebwohl-Lasher (LL) type interacting LC lattice under periodic boundary conditions, generating ensemble-averaged configurations at two temperature regimes (kBT = 0.9 and 1.2), corresponding respectively to nematic and isotropic states. These configurations were then incorporated into the MM framework to evaluate the polarization states of transmitted light. To visually interpret the resulting interference phenomena, we propose a new visualization method based on a modern interpretation of Newton’s color …
Scalar Hybrid Meson B̄Gc, Bi̇rten Barsbay İnaç
Scalar Hybrid Meson B̄Gc, Bi̇rten Barsbay İnaç
Turkish Journal of Physics
The scalar hybrid meson Hbc, containing both heavy b and c quarks, represents an intriguing exotic state in QCD. In this article, we investigate its strong decay properties using three-point QCD sum rules. We focus on the two leading decay channels, Hbc → B+ D0 and Hbc → B0 D+, which are expected to dominate the decay dynamics. The B and D mesons produced in these decays each consist of one heavy and one light quark. The strong coupling constants at the corresponding vertices are extracted, and the partial decay widths …
The 1/C Expansion Of General Relativity In A 3+1 Formulation, Revisited, Mahmut Elbi̇stan
The 1/C Expansion Of General Relativity In A 3+1 Formulation, Revisited, Mahmut Elbi̇stan
Turkish Journal of Physics
We study the 1/c expansion of general relativity within a formulation that is compatible with both the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner and the Kol-Smolkin decompositions. The Einstein-Hilbert action takes a common form for those decompositions as they are dual to each other. We first develop a method to expand this generic form and then push the expansion up to c−3 order within this novel approach. Next, we apply our technique to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition and expand it up to c−3 order explicitly. In order to demonstrate the applicability of our method and to highlight the duality at the level of expansion, we also …

Outburst Characteristics Of Transient Low-Mass X-Ray Binary 4u 1608-52, Can Güngör
Turkish Journal of Physics
We present a detailed analysis of the long-term X-ray light curve of 4U 1608–52, focusing on fast-rising exponential-decay (FRED) outbursts, low-intensity states, and quiescent intervals. By calibrating the onset times of the outbursts, we identify three distinct classes for the FRED-type events: (i) the long-high outbursts, exceeding ~50 d in duration with peak count rates above ~40 cnt s-1; (ii) the short-medium outbursts, with durations of ~20 d and peak count rates of ~30-50 cnt s-1; and (iii) the short-low outbursts, also lasting ~20 d but reaching only ~20-30 cnt s-1 at peak. Furthermore, we examine the relation between preoutburst …

Turkish Journal of Physics
New experimental data on the elastic scattering of the nuclear process 15N+11B at an energy of Elab=26.25 MeV were obtained on the DC-60 cyclotron of the INP RK. Based on a semi-microscopic analysis of the interaction of an accelerated 15N ion with 1p-shell nuclei 11B the effectiveness of the new B3Y-Fetal potential was studied. . The difference between the B3Y-Fetal potential and the traditional Yukawa potentials (M3Y-Reid and M3Y-Paris) is that its density-dependent parameters are determined from the saturation condition of nuclear matter at low energy. Analysis was performed on double folding optical model (DFOM) and so no for other …

Mandibular Extension As A Trigger Of The Proprioceptive Trigeminocardiac Reflex, Massimo Conti, Giovanna Traina, Daniele Tonlorenzi
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a physiological response characterized by a reduction in heart rate and arterial blood pressure following stimulation of any branch of the fifth cranial nerve. This review presents a novel mechanism of TCR induction through proprioceptive activation of the trigeminal nerve via mandibular extension (ME). Accordingly, it is referred to as the “proprioceptive trigeminocardiac reflex” (pTCR). An overview of the existing literature on ME-evoked TCR in humans and animals is presented, with particular emphasis on evidence of cerebral microcirculatory alterations. The magnitude of cardiovascular responses appears to depend on the duration of ME, with repeated applications …

In the present study, blood flow around the osteotomy site is evaluated with particular focus on the proximal segment in patients who underwent subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy and hip arthroplasty. To this end, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) scans were conducted to evaluate changes in proximal blood flow and to assess the impact on union rates and potential complications.
Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 26 hips from …

Background/aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided microwave ablation (MWA) in treating abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) lesions located at the cesarean scar and to assess the early clinical outcomes of this minimally invasive procedure.
Materials and methods: A total of 18 patients diagnosed with AWE based on characteristic clinical and US findings were included in this retrospective study. Preprocedural visual analog scale (VAS) scores, ultrasonographic features, and lesion volumes were recorded. The procedure was performed under both general and local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and procedural accuracy. Hydrodissection was performed before ablation to minimize the risk of thermal …
