Hepatitis C Virus: Genome Organization, Viralproteins And Implications In Disease Pathogenesis, Çağla Eroğlu, Ergün Pinarbaşi

Turkish Journal of Biology

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Infection with HCV becomes chronic in more than 80% of cases and it accounts for 20% of all cases of acute hepatitis. The hepatitis C virus was first identified by the molecular cloning of the virus genome in 1989. It is an enveloped, positive strand RNA virus with a genome size of around 9.5 kilobases. The single-stranded RNA genome of the virus contains a large open reading frame that encodes a large polyprotein of 3,010 to 3,033 amino acids shown to be processed by a …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present study was undertaken to determine the relationship between Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains isolated from various clinical specimens in Gülhane Military Medical Academy, in Ankara, Turkey. In 1997, at this hospital, the percentage of S. aureus among all nosocomial isolates was 20% and the percentage of MRSA among these S. aureus isolates was 51%. Both sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Native-Page (N-PAGE) were used for typing MRSA isolates which have common antibiotic susceptibility test results. MRSA isolates were also evaluated according to the whole-cell proteins (WCPs) and filtrate proteins (FPs). Using these methods, we concluded that …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Secondary echinococcosis is an important complication of hydatid disease and is not rare in the peritoneal cavity. However, the frequency of secondary hydatidosis in the pleural cavity is not very well known. This study was planned to elicit the frequency of secondary cyst development in the pleural cavity, and to compare this with secondary peritoneal hydatidosis. It was also intended to follow up cyst development by serological tests. Twelve white female Island rabbits were used. The mean weight of the rabbits was 2450±420 g. Cystic fluid containing protoscolex, hydatid sand and germinative membrane homogenate was injected via an 18 F …

The Interaction Of The Dipole Moment Of The Water Molecule With The Interface States Of The Cuprous Oxide/Cupric Oxide Junction, Necmi̇ Seri̇n, Tülay Seri̇n, Basri̇ Ünal Jan 2000

The Interaction Of The Dipole Moment Of The Water Molecule With The Interface States Of The Cuprous Oxide/Cupric Oxide Junction, Necmi̇ Seri̇n, Tülay Seri̇n, Basri̇ Ünal

Turkish Journal of Physics

An Au/CuO/Cu$_{2}$O/Cu sandwich structure has been obtained by growing successive Cu$_{2}$O and CuO layers on a Cu sheet. A gold metal contact was formed CuO side at pressure of $1\times10^{-6}$ Torr. Current-voltage characteristics and capacitance of the system were seen to change over a great extent due to the presence of humidity. The effect of the humidity on Au/CuO/Cu$_{2}$O/Cu is explored through the effect of water's dipole moment.

Quark And Lepton Masses From Fundamental Algebra With Exact Color Symmetry, Engi̇n Arik, Meti̇n Arik, Ufuk Kayserilioglu, M. Burcin Unlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

We propose a deformed algebra of creation and annihilation operators relating quark-lepton states. A diagonal mass operator with three parameters together with the three deformation parameters of the algebra gives a reasonable fit to observed quark-lepton masses.

Skyrmions From Harmonic Maps, Wojtek Zakrzewski Jan 2000

Skyrmions From Harmonic Maps, Wojtek Zakrzewski

Turkish Journal of Physics

We describe some relations between solitonic solutions of various models in different dimensions. We present some examples and then concentrate on some of our recent work (performed in collaboration with Ioannidou and Piette) \cite{IPZ} \cite{us2} which shows how some harmonic maps from $S^2$ to $CP^{N-1}$ can be used to find nontrivial spherically symmetric static solutions of the $SU(N)$ Skyrme model in 3 dimensions and to generate some of its low energy field configurations.
