Leptin is an important controller of the size of fat stores by inhibiting appetite. In wrestling, fat metabolism is important not only for aerobic energy system, but also for weight control and weight loss before competition. The aim of this study was to measure and compare the serum leptin levels, glucose homeostasis, and serum lipoproteins between Turkish national wrestlers and sedentary males. Materials and methods: Forty-five Turkish national wrestlers at the end of Olympic training camp before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and 43 sedentary students were selected as subjects. Post-exercise levels of serum leptin, HOMA (Homeostasis model assessment) values, triglycerides, …

Hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Ranunculus marginatus d'Urv. var. trachycarpus (Fisch. & Mey.) Azn. and R. sprunerianus Boiss. were tested in vitro for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by DPPH radical scavenging and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assays. Methanol extracts showed the highest antioxidant activity in both assays. The total phenolics in the extracts were determined colorimetrically by using the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The total flavonoid content of the extracts was evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. The results obtained in the antioxidant activity tests were in positive correlation with the total …

Histology Of The Androgenic Gland In Eriphia Verrucosa (Forskål, 1775) (Decapoda, Brachyura), Meli̇ke Erkan, Yasemi̇n Tunali, Serap Eki̇nci̇, Si̇mge Kara
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study investigated the histology of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa (Forskål, 1775). The results obtained with light microscopy show that the androgenic gland in this species consists of 2 cell types. Type 1 cells are small and do not contain a secretory product. Type 2 cells are considerably larger and may produce a proteinaceous secretion. This study identified the location and structure of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa, which is an economically important brachyuran crab, and revealed the chemical nature of the secretions produced by its cells.

Genetic Identification Of Clones And The Genetic Structure Of Seed Crops In A Pinus Brutia Seed Orchard, Nuray Kaya, Kani̇ Işik
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Megagametophyte tissue in seeds from a Pinus bruia Ten. seed orchard was analyzed for 9 enzyme systems (aconitase, alcohol dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate-transaminase, malate dehydrogenase, menadione reductase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, and shikimate dehydrogenase) encoded by 14 loci using starch gel electrophoresis. Twenty-eight clones and 3 ramets per clone were sampled from the orchard for analysis. Isozyme patterns of the clones clearly indicate that each clone had a different genotype when overall loci were taken into consideration. In 5 of the 28 clones, 1 of the 3 ramets did not match the other 2 ramets at 2 or more …

Sixty Bacillus spp. isolates were obtained from different agricultural fields in Kayseri province using selective media. Total DNA was isolated and analyzed by PCR using cry1 general primers. Of the 60 tested isolates, 17 carried the cry1 gene. B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki and all other isolates exhibited approximately 19-kb plasmid bands. In addition to the 270-bp band, the standard strain and isolate I47 yielded 180-bp PCR products. The isolates and standard strain were toxic to Ephestia kuehniella Zeller and Plodia interpunctella Hubner larvae. Insecticidal activity of isolates I36, I37, and I40 against Ephestia kuehniella was higher than that of the …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Minimum doses of metribuzin that provide satisfactory control (>90%) of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.), 2 troublesome weeds of potato crops planted in spring and autumn, respectively, were assessed. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, and 0% of the registered dose (525 g a.i. ha^{-1}) of metribuzin applied to the weeds grown in plastic pots. Dry weight data from the experiments were subjected to nonlinear regression analysis and the effective doses of metribuzin that caused a 90% reduction in dry weight (ED_{90}) were estimated. Metribuzin at doses of 240.8 …
Sensitivity Analysis Of The Evaporation Module Of The E-Digor Model, Mehmet Aydin, Suzan Fi̇li̇z Keçeci̇oğlu
Sensitivity Analysis Of The Evaporation Module Of The E-Digor Model, Mehmet Aydin, Suzan Fi̇li̇z Keçeci̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Sensitivity analysis of the soil-water-evaporation module of the E-DiGOR (Evaporation and Drainage investigations at Ground of Ordinary Rainfed-areas) model is presented. The model outputs were generated using measured climatic data and soil properties. The first-order sensitivity formulas were derived to compute relative sensitivity coefficients. A change in the net solar radiation significantly affected potential evaporation from bare soils estimated by the Penman-Monteith equation. The sensitivity coefficients were positive, with a mean value of 0.82. The sensitivity of potential soil evaporation to soil heat flux was lower during the summer months and higher during the winter. The gradient of saturated vapour …

Simultaneous Determination Of Cu(Ii) And Pd(Ii) As 4-Phenylpiperazinecarbodithioate Complex Using H-Point Standard Addition Method And Derivative Spectrophotometry, Varinder Kaur, Ashok Kumar Malik, Neelam Verma
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new, simple, inexpensive, and sensitive method for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of Cu(II) and Pd(II) by H-point standard addition method and derivative spectrophotometry is described. 4- Phenylpiperazinecarbodithioate (PPDTC) in an anionic micellar solution of SLS was used as a reagent at pH 4. The experimental parameters, such as pH, type of surfactant, concentration of reagent, and surfactant used, were optimized to minimize the errors. The linear ranges of the method were 0.1-10 and 0.1-11 \mu g mL^{-1} for Cu(II) and Pd(II), respectively. The results of applying H-point standard addition and fourth derivative spectrophotometry showed that Cu(II) and Pd(II) can …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Synthesis of some novel 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxy)benzoyl-3- arylthiourea derivatives (1a-o) was accomplished in 2 steps. The synthetic route involves the reaction of 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxy)benzoyl chloride with potassium thiocyanate in 1:1 molar ratio in acetone to afford the corresponding isothiocyante followed by treatment with suitably substituted anilines. The structures of the products were established by elemental analyses, IR, ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR, and mass spectroscopy and for 1b and 1m from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. All of the synthesized compounds (1a-o) were screened for antibacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains and were found to exhibit low activity towards the tested …
