Background/aim: Phthalates are the materials used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride. Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the most frequently used phthalates in a wide range of applications, including medical equipment such as endotracheal and feeding tubes, intravenous catheters, central lines, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation sets, total parenteral nutrition bags, blood product sets, and intravenous pump lines, respiratory sets in neonatal intensive care units. Studies have shown that phthalates, including DEHP, can cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier, possibly leading to neurodevelopmental impairments in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanisms affected by phthalate exposure have not been explored in depth. …

Comparison Of Double-Port Laparoscopic-Assisted Extracorporeal Suturing Repair Technique And Open Surgical Repair In Morgagni Hernia, Mehmet Sarikaya, Fatma Ozcan Siki, Meti̇n Gunduz, Tamer Sekmenli, Ilhan Ciftci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Study's background/aim: We aimed to compare the results of Open surgery and double-port laparoscopic-assisted extracorporeal suturing repair for treating Morgagni hernia (MH).Materials and methods: Twenty-two Patients with MH who were operated on in our clinic between January 2012 and January 2023 were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the surgical technique: open surgery (OS) (n=14) or laparoscopic surgery (LS) (n=8). Retrospective comparisons were made between the groups' demographic information, surgical method used, defect size, operation time, hospital stay length, cost, postoperative problems, and recurrence. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the groups …

The Function Of P97/Valosin-Containing Protein (Vcp) And Small Vcp-Interacting Protein (Svip) In Invasion And Migration Of Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Ebru Ali̇moğullari, Sevi̇l Çayli

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Misfolded proteins are eliminated by a process known as Endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein degradation (ERAD). ERAD has an impact on variety of illnesses, such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and neurological conditions. We concentrated on p97/Valosin-containing protein (VCP) and small VCP-interacting protein (SVIP) despite there being many proteins involved in ERAD. The existence and function of SVIP and p97/VCP in various types of pancreatic cancer have not yet been investigated. The study's objectives are to examine the expressions of SVIP and p97/VCP in two pancreatic cancer types and to show whether these proteins aid in the invasion and migration of …

Background/aim: Quercetin (Q) is a compound that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells in the colon; however, to do so, a high dose is needed, requiring a drug delivery system to target cancer endothelial cells directly. This study investigates the potency of nanodiamond-conjugated quercetin (NDQ) as an anticancer drug against colon cancer in Rattus norvegicus induced by N-methyl N-Nitrosourea (MNU). Materials and methods: This study is experimental-based and was designed using a six-group treatment method, namely normal control (KN: not treated by MNU, nanodiamond (ND), or Q); negative control (K–: treated by MNU); positive control (K+: treated by MNU …
