Thoracic Disc Herniations: Diagnosis, Surgical Techniques, And Complication Insights, Mehmet Deni̇zhan Yurtluk, Aydin Si̇nan Apaydin, Hakan Kina, Khoi Than

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Abstract: Thoracic disc herniations (TDHs) are rare conditions, comprising 0.1% to 5% of all reported herniation cases, and affecting up to 1 in 1,000,000 individuals. The mid to lower thoracic spine, particularly between the T11 and T12 vertebrae, is most frequently affected and often associated with trauma. Conditions like Scheuermann’s disease can predispose patients to TDHs. This study explores the clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, surgical techniques, and complications associated with TDHs. Diagnosis relies on magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography myelography to identify the level and nature of the herniation. Various surgical approaches, including posterolateral, lateral, and anterior, have been …

Duple-Mondnet: Duple Deep Learning-Based Mobile Net For Motor Neuron Disease Identification, Sony Helen, Joseph Jawhar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a devastating neuron ailment that affects the motor neurons that regulate muscular voluntary actions. It is a rare disorder that gradually destroys aspects of neurological function. In general, MND arises as a result of a combination of natural, behavioral, and genetic influences. However, early detection of MND is a challenging task and manual identification is time-consuming. To overcome this, a novel deep learning-based duple feature extraction framework is proposed for the early detection of MND.Materials and methods: Diffusion tensor imaging tractography (DTI) images were initially analyzed for color and textural features using dual feature …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/Aim: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological diseases. Epilepsy can affect the entire life, including childbearing age. It is estimated that epileptic women give three to five births per thousand births. Although the use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) during pregnancy has been associated with major congenital malformations in the fetus, many patients cannot discontinue the drugs before pregnancy due to the risk of seizures that may harm the mother as well as the children. In this study, our aim is to examine the follow-up findings of pregnant women who are epileptic and use AEDs during pregnancy and …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The effect of synthesized 5-((4-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)diazenyl)isophthalic acid (HBA) containing a hinderedphenol derivative on the thermooxidation, hydrochloric acid release time, and mechanical strength of PVC/CuO nanocompositeswas studied. Moreover, 5-((4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethylphenyl)diazenyl)isophthalic acid (HMA) was synthesized for comparison ofcorresponding PVC nanocomposite properties. PVC nanocomposite thin films were prepared through in situ surface modificationof CuO nanoparticles with HBA and HMA, individually, in the PVC solution. The XRD and FE-SEM results clarified the desirabledispersion of CuO nanoparticles. The PVC sample with loading of 5 wt% from each HBA and CuO was found to be the most thermallystable, which was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis in inert conditions. The …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Comprehensive studies of the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) have shown high interest in fuel cell technologies. As anodecatalysts, introducing platinum group metal (PGM) free catalyst is promising for higher catalytic activity towards the EOR, as these arecost-effective, pollution-tolerant, and suitable for sustainable energy conversion. In this investigation, multi walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) supported PGM-free electrocatalysts are synthesized by the impregnation reduction method. The atomic structure, composition, and morphology of nanoalloy catalysts are discovered through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy techniques. Electrochemical behaviours have been analysed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), linearsweep voltammetry (LSV), Chronoamperometry (CA), and electrochemical impedance …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

After abdominal surgery, there is a possibility of adhesions between the abdominal organs and the abdominal wall. Theadhesions can lead to problems such as chronic pain, intestinal blockage, and infertility. To prevent adhesion, antiadhesion patchescan be used. In this study, poly hydroxybutyrate-co-hexanoate membranes were fabricated as antiadhesion patches and modified witheither fatty acids or polyethylene glycol. The homogeneity and protein absorption of the membranes were assessed. The effects onblood coagulation factors were determined and the adhesion-proliferation properties of human fibroblast cells on the membranes weredetermined. The results show that myristic acid slightly increases surface free energy (40.7 ± 4.2 mN/m), …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In whole-rock geochemical analysis, the quantification of aluminum in geological samples is performed using differentanalytical techniques including UV-Vis spectrophotometry. During the spectrophotometric analysis of aluminum utilizing AlizarinRed S, iron causes significant interference, leading to inaccurate measurements of the amount of aluminum in the sample. In caseswhere leached or processed samples contain titanium, interference is also observed. However, appropriate masking agents can removethese interferences. In this study, various masking agents including Tiron, oxalic acid, ascorbic acid, and thioglycolic acid were utilizedfor the masking of iron. Among these masking agents, ascorbic acid proved to be the best candidate for masking iron. A …

A New Water-Soluble Silicon Phthalocyanine That Catalyzes The Photodegradation Of Pollutant Dyes, Damla Nur Kaya, Behi̇ce Sebnem Sesalan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The removal of color arising from water-soluble dyes in wastewaters is necessary to counter the threat to health. Because of thedifficulty in elimination of these dyes by conventional methods, their photodegradation using photosensitizers such as phthalocyanines(Pcs) has been employed recently. When compared to peripherally substituted derivatives, silicon Pcs are reported to be morebiocompatible with low toxicity. Thus a new silicon Pc substituted with two quaternized dimethylamino phenoxy units (compound 1)and its quaternized derivative (compound 2) were synthesized to test its photocatalytic ability employing the dyes methylene blue (MB),eosin B (EB), erythrosine (ERB), sulforhodamine B (SRB), and brilliant blue FCF (BRB), …

Mapping Of Qtls Associated With Frost Tolerance In Olive (Olea Europaea L.), Öznur Çeti̇n, Nurengi̇n Mete, Handan Ölmez, Hati̇ce Gülen

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The olive (Olea europaea L.) is widely distributed due to its high adaptability to different environmental conditions. However,in recent years, sudden extreme temperature decreases and frost damage have caused significant yield and quality losses in some regions. This situation has led to the development of varieties with high frost tolerance, suitable for regions where cold damage may occur. It takes many years to develop varieties using classical breeding methods in olives. Therefore, early selection should be made usingbiotechnological methods. Markers about any trait provide a great advantage, especially in plant species with a very long juvenile sterilityperiod, as they allow for a …
