Medicinal plants, especially rich in polyphenolic compounds, have been suggested to be chemopreventive on account of antioxidative properties. Salvia officinalis L., an aromatic and medicinal plant, is widely used in folk medicine and is well known for its antioxidant properties. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the antioxidative, possible genotoxic, and antigenotoxic potency of S. officinalis extract against cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. Animals were orally dosed with S. officinalis extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg body weight) for 7 days before the administration of a single intraperitoneal dose of CYP (40 mg/kg …

Establishment And Biological Research Of The Jining Grey Goat Fibroblast Line, Chunyu Bai, Dianjun Wang, Xiaohua Su, Minghai Zhang, Weijun Guan, Yuehui Ma
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Using Jining Grey goat ear marginal tissues as experimental materials, we succeeded in establishing a fibroblast cell bank, including 32 samples, by means of a primary explant and cryopreservation technique. The results from the biological analysis suggested that the population doubling time of the cell line was approximately 48 h. The diploid accounted for 98.35%, the isozyme analysis of the lactic dehydrogenase and malic dehydrogenase disproved cross contamination, and the results of the bacterium, fungi, virus, and mycoplasma detection tests were all negative. The transfection rates of 3 fluorescent protein genes were high, which supported the opinion that exogenous genes …

The Use Of Otolith Length And Weight Measurements In Age Estimations Of Three Gobiidae Species (Deltentosteus Quadrimaculatus, Gobius Niger, And Lesueurigobius Friesii), Akin Türker İlkyaz, Gülnur Meti̇n, Hasan Tuncay Kinacigi̇l
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Age estimations were made using otolith length and weight measurements from 3 goby species in the central Aegean Sea: the four-spotted goby (Deltentosteus quadrimaculatus Valenciennes, 1837), the black goby (Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758), and Fries's goby (Lesueurigobius friesii Malm, 1874). A total of 266 individual four-spotted gobies, 283 black gobies, and 124 Fries's gobies provided otolith samples for analysis. The relationships between fish age and otolith length and fish age and otolith weight were determined, as were the relationships between total length and otolith length and total length and otolith weight. Results indicated that the relationship between fish age and …

Hydrogen-transfer reduction processes are attracting increasing interest from synthetic chemists in view of their operational simplicity. In the present study novel ruthenium carbene complexes were generated in situ and tested for their transfer hydrogenation reactions. The in situ prepared 3 component 1,3-dialkyltetrahydropyrimidinium salts (LHX)/[RuCl_2(p-cymene)]_2 and KOH catalyzed quantitatively the transfer hydrogenation of ketones under mild reaction conditions in 2-propanol.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The catalytic combustions of different naturally oxygenated volatile organic compounds (ethyl acetate, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and benzyl alcohol) alone and in binary mixtures were investigated over pure \gamma -Al_2O_3, Mn/\gamma -Al_2O_3, and Cr/\gamma -Al_2O_3. The catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method and were characterized using XRD, ICP-AES, SEM, and BET. Mn/\gamma -Al_2O_3 showed higher activity than others in combustion of the O-VOCs, whereas complete conversion of isopropanol (the most reactive O-VOC) occurred at 350 °C and 400 °C on Mn/\gamma -Al_2O_3 and Cr/\gamma -Al_2O_3, respectively. The following order was found for reactivity of organic compounds in …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Bolu Basin in northwestern Turkey, situated in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), displays the neotectonic features of a pull apart basin. The long axis of the basin extends east-west, parallel to the fault zone and Bolu city, situated in the central part of this basin, was extensively damaged during the 17 August 1999 M= 7.4 and 12 November 1999 M= 7.2 earthquakes. The master strand of the North Anatolian Fault Zone cuts through the basin close to its southern edge and movement on this strand has caused tilting of the basin floor towards the …

The North Anatolian Fault On The Hersek Peninsula, Turkey: Its Geometry And Implications For The 1999 İzmit Earthquake Rupture Propagation, Özgür Kozaci, Erhan Altunel, Scott Lindvall, Charles Brankman, William Lettis
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The western termination of the 1999 İzmit earthquake still remains as an intriguing problem for researchers and the people residing around the Sea of Marmara. There have been numerous offshore mapping and modelling studies performed in the Gulf of İzmit. However, the main debate about the western termination of the 1999 İzmit surface rupture is linked to the Hersek Peninsula and corresponding fault geometry. We focused our efforts at resolving the fault geometry on the Hersek Peninsula by applying geological mapping, geomorphic analyses, palaeoseismic trenching and geophysical surveys. Our studies reveal that the North Anatolian Fault forms a restraining stepover …

Western Termination Of The Mw 7.4, 1999 İzmit Earthquake Rupture: Implications For The Expected Large Earthquake In The Sea Of Marmara, Gülsen Uçarkuş, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir, Rolando Armijo
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Mw 7.4, August 17, 1999 İzmit earthquake ruptured a ~100-km-long onshore section of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) in the eastern Marmara region, causing the loss of more than 20,000 people and extensive destruction. The western termination and total length of the earthquake rupture is still a matter of debate because the surface rupture goes offshore in the Gulf of İzmit after displaying a coseismic displacement of ~5 m. Such a considerable slip implies that the fault rupture must definitely continue some distance westward on the sea floor, but where exactly it terminated is difficult to determine. This issue …

Geochemical And Sr-Nd Isotopic Characteristics Of Post-Collisional Calc-Alkaline Volcanics In The Eastern Pontides (Ne Turkey), Abdullah Kaygusuz, Mehmet Arslan, Wolfgang Siebel, Cüneyt Şen
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Major, trace element, K-Ar age and Sr-Nd isotopic data are presented for the Eocene Torul volcanics in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt (NE Turkey). The studied rocks are composed of basaltic andesitic, andesitic, trachyandesitic, and minor trachydacitic lavas associated with their pyroclastics. These rocks contain plagioclase (An2-44), hornblende (Mg#= 0.78-0.98), clinopyroxene (Wo43-46 En41-43 Fs10-15), biotite, quartz, and minor sanidine phenocrysts. K-Ar ages on hornblendes ages range from 43.99 (±2.59) to 33.45 (±2.32) Ma, within the Middle to Late Eocene. The volcanic rocks show calc-alkaline affinities and have medium to high K contents. They are enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) …

Lagrangian Prediction And Correlation Analysis With Eulerian Data, Mi̇ne Çağlar, Taylan Bi̇lal, Leonid Piterbarg
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
A velocity field obtained from the ocean surface by high-frequency radar is used to test Lagrangian prediction algorithms designed to evaluate the position of a particle given its initial position and observations of several other simultaneously released particles. The problem is motivated by oceanographic applications such as search and rescue operations and spreading pollutants, especially in coastal regions. The prediction skill is essentially determined by temporal and spatial covariances of the underlying velocity field. For this reason correlation analysis of both Lagrangian and Eulerian velocities was carried out. Space covariance functions and spectra of the velocity field are also presented …

Palaeoseismological Investigations On The Karadere Segment, North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey, Aynur Di̇kbaş, Hüsnü Serdar Akyüz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Karadere segment of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) is the easternmost part that ruptured during the 17 August 1999 İzmit earthquake (Mw 7.4). It has a different orientation, at N65°E to other segments which have a nearly E-W trend, and lesser dextral displacement, with maximum 2.3 m in contrast with 5.2 m in the ruptured neighbouring western segment. Two palaeoseismological trenches, at Kazimiye and Karadere sites, were excavated on the central part of the Karadere segment to determine the timing of past earthquakes. Excavation of the Kazimiye site revealed the occurrence of five past events since the 4th century …

Stratigraphy And Larger Foraminifera Of The Middle Eocene To Lower Oligocene Shallow-Marine Units In The Northern And Eastern Parts Of The Thrace Basin, Nw Turkey, György Less, Ercan Özcan, Aral Okay
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The shallow-marine Eocene Soğucak Limestone and Oligocene Ceylan Formation were studied in the northern and eastern parts of the Thrace Basin with detailed biometric analysis of the full spectrum of larger benthic foraminifera (mainly nummulitids and orthophragmines). This allows us to establish a high-resolution biostratigraphy in the context of the shallow benthic zonation (with SBZ zones) of the Tethyan Palaeogene since larger foraminiferal assemblages show a very strong Western Tethyan affinity. Only two species (Heterostegina armenica and Orbitoclypeus haynesi) are unknown so far to the west of the Thrace Basin. The age of particular larger foraminiferal sites is determined based …

Obtaining The Secondary Impedance Of Single-Sided Linear Induction Motor With A Double Layer Reaction Rail: A New Approach, Ali̇ Suat Gerçek, Vedat Mehmet Karsli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In the performance calculations of single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM),the equivalent circuit technique (ECT) is used. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for obtaining the secondary impedance of single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) with a double layer reaction rail by using the layered secondary model. The proposed method improves the ECT technique by considering the saturation effect and the non-linear complex equivalent relative permeability. This study also examines the contributions of other electromagnetic effects, such as longitudinal end effect and transverse edge effect as well. Our method is applied to the SLIM and computed results of the method …

A Logic Method For Efficient Reduction Of The Space Complexity Of The Attribute Reduction Problem, Mehmet Hacibeyoğlu, Fati̇h Başçi̇ftçi̇, Şi̇rzat Kahramanli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The goal of attribute reduction is to find a minimal subset (MS) R of the condition attribute set C of a dataset such that R has the same classification power as C. It was proved that the number of MSs for a dataset with n attributes may be as large as (_{n/2}^n) and the generation of all of them is an NP-hard problem. The main reason for this is the intractable space complexity of the conversion of the discernibility function (DF) of a dataset to the disjunctive normal form (DNF). Our analysis of many DF-to-DNF conversion processes showed that approximately …

A Vision Based Feedback Mechanism For 6-Dof Stewart Platform, Utku Büyükşahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Eyes are the most ubiquitous sensors of humankind. However, ``Vision Based Sensors" are not as common as what this fact would suggest. A survey of the previous work on image processing would reveal that the bulk of the research in this area have been conducted since the year 2000. These facts clearly show that image processing is the technology of our century, and is very open to further development. In this work, a system that combines a classical mechanism of the 20th century with the recent technology of the 21st century is presented and the design, theoretical background, the software …
