Prevalence Of Asthma And Asthma-Like And Allergic Symptoms In The Urban Adult Population Of Elazığ, Tuncer Tuğ, Yasemi̇n Açik, Esra Tuğ
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma, asthma-like symptoms and atopy in the adult population of the city of Elazığ. A specific questionnaire, adopted from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey including social status and smoking tendencies of people was filled in by 2454 randomly chosen (1088 male, 1366 female) subjects. The cumulative prevalence of asthma and asthma-like symptoms for males, females and the general population was 22.0%, 28.7%, and 25.7%, respectively. The periodic prevalences of them were 17.3%, 20.5%, and 19.1%, while rates of previously diagnosed asthma were 2.6%, 3.5%, and 3.1%. Subjects suffering …

This work studies the light emission patterns associated with the spatial modulation of the transversal distribution of the current density in a converter cell with a GaAs semiconductor cathode. Such light emission exhibits spatial structures of current filaments depending on the feeding voltage, illumination intensity, gas pressure and the surface treatment of the electrodes. When the current is increased above the stable limit, breakdown or small current filamentations begin. However, n-GaAs exhibits an S-shaped current-density-field relation due to impact ionization of carriers from shallow donors into the conduction band under high electric fields. Some new triorganotin carboxylates containing germanium with general formulae (R^{1}GeCHR^{2}CH_{2}COO) Sn(CH_{2}C(CH_{3})_{3})_{3} where R^{1} = N(CH_{2}CH_{2}O)_{3} and C_{6}H_{5}, R^{2} = C_{6}H_{5}, p-C_{6}H_{4}OCH_{3} and o-/p-C_{6}H_{4}F were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, multinuclear (^{1}H, ^{13}C, ^{119}Sn) NMR and mass spectrometry. Antibacterial activity of these compounds was evaluated against the standard drugs ampicilline and amoxicilline, and found to be more active in some cases than the standard drugs.

Thermodynamic And Kinetic Parameters Concerning Complex Formation Between 3-Hydroxy- And 1-Aminopyrene And Pyridine, Nursel Acar, Özgül Koçak
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Systems formed by the pyrene derivatives 3-hydroxypyrene and 1-aminopyrene with pyridine were studied. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the systems were calculated using the changes in the absorption and emission spectra which occur due to hydrogen bond or complex formation. The decrease of the formation rate constant in the series methylcyclohexane, benzene, and o-chlorotoluene may be due to a more difficult formation of the hydrogen bond complex due to the increase of the dielectric constant in the solvent series.

A new series of imidazole nucleosides was synthesized via direct condensation and construction of heterocyclic moiety from glycosyl amine templates. The characterization of the compounds was accomplished by elemental analysis, ^{1}H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, IR, UV-VIS spectral data and optical rotation.

Application Of Quantitative Structure-Retention Relationships (Qsrr) To A Set Of Organic Bromo And Nitrile Derivatives, Gustavo P. Romanelli, Juan Carlos Autino, Eduardo A. Castro
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The retention times are studied for two sets of 1-bromo-2-aryiloxyetanes and 3- aryloxypropiononitriles derivatives by means of Quantitative Structure-Retention Relationships (QSRR}). Five quantum mechanical molecular descriptors are used to calculate the regression equations. The fitting polynomials are computed in several-variable at first, second, and third order equations. Results are only significant when resorting to several-variable formulae which seems to point out the rather complex physical chemistry nature of the property under study.

An Indirect Lectin Affinity Bioassay For Uromodulin, Zeki̇ Topcu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Uromodulin is a monomeric glycoprotein excreted in large amounts in urine. Most of the assay methods for quantifying uromodulin rely on the availability of antibodies to this glycoprotein. This study reports a new bioassay for uromodulin without requiring the presence of antibodies. The bioassay is based on the lectin affinity of the glycoprotein and the known interaction between uromodulin and the tumor necrosis factor. The measuring range of the bioassay described in this paper is between 0.13 and 1.25 \mu g/ml, which makes it a potential method for clinical use.

The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of n-hexane, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and water extracts of Ceratonia siliqua L. leaves were evaluated in this study. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were reported against Escherichia coli ATCC 29998, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Escherichia coli ATCC 11230, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538P, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Salmonella thyphimurium CCM 5445, Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 13047, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 27853 as bacteria and Candida albicans ATCC 10239 as yeast-like fungi by the disc diffusion method. In this research, our aim was to determine the effects of gibberellic acid, which was applied to safflower plants (Carthamus tinctorius L. cv. Dinçer 5-118) for pollen sterility induction, on some physiological activity and endogenous hormone levels of the seeds. Exogenously applied gibberellic acid (GA_3) strongly influenced the endogenous hormone levels of the seeds by decreasing the levels of GA_3 and zeatin, and increasing the levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA). The lowered endogenous GA_3/ABA and zeatin/IAA ratios in the seeds significantly decreased the germination percentage and hypocotyl elongation, respectively. The seeds from GA_3 treated plants had …

A simple, convenient and accurate indirect titrimetric method and a rapid, sensitive and precise indirect spectrophotometric method for the determination of six phenothiazine drugs using chloramine-T as an oxidant are described. The titrimetric method is based on the oxidation of the drugs in sulphuric acid medium by a known excess of chloramine-T and iodometric determination of the unreacted chloramine-T. In the spectrophotometric method, the unreacted oxidant is made to react with metol in the presence of an aromatic amine to produce a purple-red product with the absorption maximum at 520 nm. The phenolic \beta-diketones I prepared by modified Baker-Venkataraman rearrangement were converted to the flavones II in acidic medium which on treatment with aqueous ethylenediamine/propylenediamine gave diazepine derivatives III. After coupling with acetobromo sugars in the presence of mercuric cyanide and nitromethane, deacetylation in methanolic ammonia yielded nucleosides V. The structures of all the intermediates and final products were confirmed with the help of modern spectroscopic techniques.

In this study, the seasonal variations in the macro-algal biomass in the Gulf of Antalya (north-eastern Mediterranean) were investigated. The seasonal variations of the macro-algal biomass were found to be related to the biology of the abundant species during less favourable seasons. These variations occurred usually as a result of a significant reduction in algal density [Padina pavonica (L.) J.V.Lamour., Dasycladus vermicularis (Scopoli) Krasser, Chondrophycus papillosus (C.Agardh) Garbay & Harper] or loss of major part of their thallus [Cystoseira spp., Liagora distenta (Mertens ex Roth) J.V.Lamour., Liagora viscida (Forssk.)
