Simple sequence repeat (SSR) DNA polymorphism is a PCR-based marker system, also known as the microsatellite marker system. SSRs are tandemly repeated 1 to 5 nucleotide units dispersed throughout eukaryotic genomes. They are considered one of the most powerful molecular markers for many diverse applications in genome related studies, e.g., DNA fingerprinting for discrimination of genotypes and genetic mapping. Locus specificity, co-dominant inheritance and easy detection with PCR amplifications are some of the favorable features of this marker system. In this study, ribotyping (restriction polymorphism ribosomal RNA analyses) was applied as a taxonomic tool for bacteria belonging to the genus Nocardia. A total of 21 Nocardia strains were clearly distinguished using a combination of EcoRV gene restriction endonuclease patterns together with a digoxigenin-labelled Streptomyces violaceoruber TK21 rDNA probe. Five distinct ribotypes were identified, and each ribotype contained 4 to 8 restriction fragments ranging in size from 1.2 to 20.7 kb. The evaluation of the results showed that N. brasiliensis, N. farcinica, N. otitidiscaviarum and N. seriolea are taxonomically well-established species, except N. pseudobrasiliensis. Three experimental diets containing 14.9% (low carbohydrate; LC), 31.4% (medium carbohydrate; MC) and 42.3% (high carbohydrate; HC) of extruded wheat meal were fed to rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, to investigate the significance of carbohydrate level on the rates of gastric evacuation and return of appetite (feed intake). Gastric evacuation measurements were performed by serial slaughter and recovery of digesta whilst X-radiography was used to estimate the rates of return of appetite. Hypocotyl and stem explants excised from in vitro and greenhouse-grown seedlings of Madaras, 1886 Sel. and Omega flax cultivars were compared in terms of percentage of explants producing shoots, shoot number per explant and total shoot number per petri dish. Hypocotyl explants resulted in better shoot regeneration. In vitro-grown seedlings were found to be more suitable than greenhouse-grown seedlings as an explant source.

Forty strains were isolated from six different soil samples. The soil samples were taken from the grasslands of Elmadağ, Çubuk, Gölbaşı, Haymana, Polatlı and Kazan near Ankara. As a result of the identification tests, 30 strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus firmus, Bacillus sphaericus, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus pumilus and other Bacillus spp. The inhibitory effect of Bacillus strains against the test bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica and Micrococcus flavus was examined. It was found that B. thuringiensis D1, B. thuringiensis D3 and B. megaterium Y6 strains showed an inhibitory effect on all of the test …

Aspergillus flavus Link ex Gray and Cladosporium cladosporioides (Fresen.) de Vries, isolated from the soil of Florya Atatürk Forest, were extracted and some toxicity tests were carried out in order to determine their toxic effects on mice for the first time in Turkey. The method of extraction complied with the one described in the literature. During the process, Coca's solution was used as an extractive agent. Sterile filtration was employed in the sterilization process. The stocks were diluted to 1/10 of their concentrations before the toxicity tests were carried out. Forty-five thermophilic streptomycetes were isolated from different habitats and examined for 163 unit characters with 8 representative thermophilic type strains, 29 reference strains and 16 randomly selected duplicated organisms for many phenotypic properties. The data were evaluated using the simple matching coefficients (S_{SM}), and clustering achieved using the complete algorithm. It was clearly seen that the high cophenetic correlation, low test error values and high similarity level agreed with the defined numerical taxonomic criteria. Concentrations of three aluminium compounds significantly affected the mycelial extension of Trichoderma viride with low pH values growing on agar media, and the largest effect was recorded with aluminium chloride. Experiments in this work showed that there were significant relationships between Al concentration and pH in the Al inhibition of fungal activity on agar media. Different effects of aluminium concentration on the mycelial extension rate of eight fungal species inoculated on pH gradient plates were recorded. The development, survival and fecundity of three aphidophagus coccinellid species, Scymnus apetzi (Mulsant), Scymnus subvillosus (Goeze) and Exochomus nigromaculatus (Goeze), were studied under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1, 65 ± 5% RH and 16 L/8D). Development time from egg to adult was 20.4, 17.1 and 16.7 days for S. apetzi, S. subvillosus and E. nigromaculatus, respectively. Mortality rate from egg to adulthood was highest for S. apetzi (37.9%) followed by S. subvillosus (36.3%) and E. nigromaculatus (25.7%). In 1996-1999, studies on the utilization of pheromone traps for the estimation of adult emergence and the observation of the seasonal population dynamics of Pectinophora gossypiella (Saund.), which tends to spread in cotton growing areas, and on the determination of day-degree values for its biological stages were carried out in Amik Plain. It was found that adult emergence of the overwintering generation first occurred between late April and early May and lasted for 2-2.5 months. Six new dioxobridged binuclear complexes of the type [MO(L)Z]_{2}Z, where M=niobium(V) or tantalum(V), L=N-alkylphenothiazines (NAPs) and Z=tartrate and oxalate for niobium and tantalum respectively, were synthesized. The stoichiometry of the complexes was proposed on the basis of elemental analyses, molar conductance, magnetic and thermal data. The coordination behaviour of the ligands was determined with the help of spectroscopic studies. The fungicidal activity of the complexes was evaluated.

The condensation reaction of 2,3-dichloropropyl- and 2-methoxy-3-chloropropyl alkyl ketones with alkyl 2-aminoacetate salts leads to 1-alkoxy-carbonylmethyl-2-alkylpyrroles. These compounds, with various bases, gave 1-carbamoylmethyl-, 1-dialkylaminocarbonylmethyl-, 1-carbazoyl methyl-2-alkylpyrroles and potassium salt of 2-alkyl-pyrrolyl-1-acetic acid.

Organotin(IV) derivatives of the type R_{4 - n}SnL_{n} where R = Me, n-Bu, Ph, L = 4 - (N-maleoyl)butanoate and n = 1 or 2 were synthesized by refluxing R_{3}SnCl and R_{2}SnCl_{2} with (4-(N-maleoyl)butanoate in the presence of triethylamine using dry toluene as solvent. These compounds were characterized by IR, multinuclear NMR and mass spectrometry. We also studied their thermal behavior and calculated the degradation pattern, energy of activation (E_{a}) and order of reaction (n).

The geometrical structure of the sea anemone and sea pansies neuropeptide Pol-RFamide II Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}-Leu^{3}-Lys^{4}-Gly^{5}-Arg^{6}-Phe^{7}-NH_{2} was carried out by molecular mechanics (MM). The linkage bonds are characterised by the torsional angles \phi, \psi and \omega and the side groups characterised by the torsional angles \chi_{1}, \chi_{2}, \chi_{3},... subsequently. The energy-map for each monopeptide of the Pol-RFamide II was drawn in the range of -180° to 180° with increments of 20°. Conformation facilities for monopeptides were decided from these maps. These results were used in the analysis of the dipeptide Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}. Then, the Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}-Leu^{3} tripeptide was examined by using the calculated results …

New 5-alkyl and 3-(2,4-dimethylphenyl) substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione derivatives were synthesized by the ring closure reactions of various acylhydrazides with carbon disulphide. Mannich bases for some of these compounds were also synthesized by condensation with benzaldehyde and primary amines. All new compounds were characterized by spectral data. Most of them were tested for their antibacterial and antituberculostatic activity. Molecular orbital calculations at the HF/6-31G** level were also performed to determine the optimized geometrical structures. Results indicated electron delocalization over several atoms of the ring. Cyproheptadine hydrochloride (CPH), methdilazine hydrochloride (MDH) and promethazine theoclate (PMT) were determined in their pure state and in pharmaceutical formulations by a simple spectrophotometric method. The determination was based on the formation of a charge-transfer complex between chloranilic acid as a \pi-acceptor and the studied drugs as n-donors in an acetonitrile-chloroform mixture. The spectra, various experimental parameters, the stoichiometry and the stability of the complexes formed were investigated. The complexes formed were found to absorb at 520 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration ranges 25-125, 20-100 and 25-150 \mu g ml^{-1}, for CPH, MDH and PMT respectively. The …
