Implications Of Cereal-Based Crop Rotations, Nitrogen Fertilization, And Stubble Grazing On Soil Organic Matter In A Mediterranean-Type Environment, John Ryan, S. Masri, Hayri̇ye İbri̇kçi̇, M. Singh, Mustafa Pala, H. C. Harris Jan 2008

Implications Of Cereal-Based Crop Rotations, Nitrogen Fertilization, And Stubble Grazing On Soil Organic Matter In A Mediterranean-Type Environment, John Ryan, S. Masri, Hayri̇ye İbri̇kçi̇, M. Singh, Mustafa Pala, H. C. Harris

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Soil organic matter (SOM) is essential to all soil processes that have an impact on crop production and the environment. Soils of the semi-arid Mediterranean region are low in SOM due to environmental conditions (temperature, moisture) and centuries of cultivation. Hence, as SOM has a major influence on soil aggregation, nutrient supply, and soil moisture, as well as the relationships between them, there is a need to assess the impact of cropping systems on this critical soil parameter. During a 14-year rotation trial of durum wheat with alternate crops in northern Syria (mean annual rainfall: 340 mm), we examined the …

Adding To The Reproductive Biology Of The Parthenogenetic Oribatid Mite, Archegozetes Longisetosus (Acari, Oribatida, Trhypochthoniidae), Michael Heethoff, Michael Laumann, Paavo Bergmann

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The oribatid mite, Archegozetes longisetosus, serves as a chelicerate model organism due to its relatively short life cycle and ease of laboratory culturing. It is a parthenogenetic species and all cultures recently used in different laboratories are descendants of a single female collected in 1993. While aspects of its developmental and functional biology have been published, knowledge of its reproductive rate and reproductive system is meager, and data on its life history are contradictory. Herein, we present the gross morphology of the reproductive system as obtained by SEM techniques and X-ray synchrotron microtomography, a new tool for studying mite anatomy. …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto is the predominant cause of Lyme disease. B. burgdorferi strains carry several linear and circular plasmids and this may be also used as a distinguishing property of the bacteria. The presence of a mixed population of linear and circular plasmids makes separation and characterization of each kind very difficult. In this study, 7 clinical strains of skin and CSF isolates were determined by clonal selection and plasmid profile of B. burgdorferi by electron microscopy and 2-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis. The results demonstrate that the skin isolate (DK1) has 2 different phenotypes A and B, but the …
