N,N-dimethyl-N' -(2-methylbenzoyl)thiourea, C_{11}H_{14}N_2SO (HL^1), N,N-dibutyl-N' -(2-methylben\-zoyl)thiourea, C{17}H{26}N2SO (HL^2), and N,N-dihexyl-N' -(2-methylbenzoyl) thiourea, C{21}H{34}N2SO (HL^3) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, NMR), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound HL^1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, Z = 4. Compound HL^3 also crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, Z = 8 with 2 independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The Gastropod Fauna And Their Abundance, And Some Physicochemical Parameters Of Lake Gölbaşı (Hatay, Turkey), Hülya Şerefli̇şan, M. Zeki̇ Yildirim, Menderes Şerefli̇şan

An investigation was carried out on the native gastropod species in Lake Gölbaşı, Hatay. During the research 3 species belonging to the subclass Pulmonata (Gyraulus piscinarum, Radix labiata, Anisus leucostoma) were detected along with 9 species of the subclass Orthogastropoda (=Prosobranchia) including Theodoxus jordani, Semisalsa contempta, Semisalsa longiscata, Bithynia phialensis, Valvata saulcyi, Valvata piscinalis, Melanoides tuberculatus, Melanopsis praemorsa ferussaci, Melanopsis costata costata. These gastropod species were collected from 4 stations chosen in the lake. Furthermore, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature were measured at the sampling sites.

Ornithogalum nurdaniae Y.Bağcı & Savran sp. nov. (Liliaceae), a new species related to O. oligophyllum E.D.Clarke, is described and illustrated from Uludağ (the Bithynian Olympus), a mountain in NW Anatolia well known for its rich flora and many local endemics (A2 Bursa province). Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Notes are also presented on the ecology, biogeography, and conservation status of the new species.

Aegilops juvenalis (Thell.) Eig (Poaceae) is recorded and vouchered for the first time from Turkey. This first vouchered wild record is confined to Ceylanpınar province in C8 Şanlıurfa. The diagnostic morphological characters discriminating it from of Aegilops crassa Boiss. are pointed out. Notes are presented on its ecology and phenology. A distribution map of this species is also given.

Herein 152 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi belonging to 68 genera are reported from Kızıldağ (Derebucak district, Konya province). Of these, 149 taxa are reported from the study area for the first time and 96 taxa are new for Konya province. Lecanora perpruinosa Fröberg and Toninia submexicana de Lesd. are new records for Turkey and Asia.

Three hundred and two lichenised fungi taxa belonging to 90 genera and 45 lichenicolous fungi taxa belonging to 24 genera are reported from Aladağlar National Park. Of these, 290 lichenised fungi taxa and 21 lichenicolous fungi taxa are reported for the first time from Aladağlar National Park. Nine species of lichenised fungi, namely Arthopyrenia fraxini A.Massal., Aspicilia obscurata (Fr.) Arnold, Cephalophysis leucospila (Anzi) H.Kilias & Scheid., Chaenotheca ferruginea (Turner ex Sm.) Reciprocal crosses involving Solanum gilo Raddi, S. anguivi Lam. and S. macrocarpon L., subg. Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter sect. Melongena Dunal were produced in order to assess inherent nuclear and non-nuclear influences on hybrid fitness, the extent of genomic change, and species compatibility. Hybrids expressed intermediacy and overlaps in leaf, petiole, petal, and plant height dimensions. Maternal influence was dominant in growth habit, leaf shape and texture, flower colour, and fruit size, while paternal control was limited to fruit colour in Solanum gilo × S. macrocarpon. Secretory breast carcinoma is a rare form of invasive breast carcinoma constituting less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. Since insufficient data have been compiled about this rare tumor, it is important to report every case of secretory breast carcinoma in an effort to better understand the histopathological and clinical characteristics of this tumor and to contemplate the most appropriate therapeutic approach. In this report, two adult female patients over 50 years of age and a 14-year-old girl were reviewed with a detailed immunohistochemical work-up to define the clinical and molecular characteristics of secretory breast carcinoma.

However, plasma leptin and resistin levels in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are still unclear. We aimed to investigate the plasma levels of leptin and resistin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to compare them with controls. Malignant infantile osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a rare inherited bone disease characterized by reduced or dysregulated activity of osteoclasts, which results in generalized osteosclerosis. This leads to abnormal bone marrow cavity formation and to the clinical signs and symptoms of bone marrow failure and nerve compression. Symptoms related to early or late hypocalcemia may appear as the first presentation of MIOP in a newborn. We present a 14-day-old boy with neonatal hypocalcaemia due to MIOP.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidative status in patients with colorectal cancer and healthy controls, based on measurements made using a novel method. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between 2005 and 2007, and included 30 patients with colorectal cancer and 30 healthy controls. To determine the antioxidative status of the patients and healthy controls, serum total antioxidant capacity was measured using a novel automated method. Blood samples were taken from the healthy controls and the patients. Results: Total serum antioxidant capacity was significantly lower in colorectal cancer patients than in healthy persons (P < 0.023). Conclusions: Patients with colorectal cancer are exposed to oxidative stress, which may have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The novel automated method used in this study was developed in our laboratory, and is feasible and fully automated; therefore, it may be useful for evaluating oxidative-antioxidative balance in patients with colorectal cancer.

Aim: To investigate annexin A2 (ANXA2), annexin A7 (ANXA7), and annexin A11 (ANXA11) expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Although overexpression of ANXA2 has been reported in HNSCC, there are no studies on ANXA7 or ANXA11 in the same region. Materials and Methods: ANXA2, ANXA7, and ANXA11 were immunohistochemically studied in paraffin-embedded sections obtained from 43 patients with HNSCC. Aim: To assess the correlation between pathological and radiological findings in patients with pure bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the pathological and radiological findings in patients with pure BAC. Results: We reviewed the case records, pathological specimens, and computer files of 26 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of pure BAC during a 3-year period. There was a statistically significant relationship between pathological and radiological findings (X^2 = 15.143, P = 0.004). Aim: Determining the difference regarding obesity in German and Turkish adults. Materials and Methods: This study examined a cross-section of adults aged 30-79 years old. Age-adjustment was uniformly provided for comparisons. Results: Among 3055 Germans and 2925 Turks, Turkish women had significantly higher markers of (abdominal) obesity than German women, while waist circumference (WC) was similar among males. Blood pressure (BP), concentrations of total, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B were significantly higher among Germans, whereas Turks had markedly higher fasting triglycerides and lower HDL-cholesterol. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of digital rectal examination (DRE), serum total prostate specific antigen (PSA), percent free PSA (fPSA%), and PSA density (PSAD) in the prediction of high radical prostatectomy Gleason’s scores (GSs) ≥ 7 in patients with clinically localized prostate cancer. Materials and methods: Two hundred twenty-five patients who underwent radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer were included in the study. The patients were grouped with respect to their radical prostatectomy GSs: group 1 including the patients with GSs < 6 (n = 170) and group 2 including the ones with GSs ≥ 7 (n = 55). The groups were compared with respect to potential predictors of a high GS, which were patient age, gland volume (Vp) obtained by transrectal ultrasound, DRE, PSA, fPSA%, and PSAD. Aim: Previous studies reported the relation of left-handedness with dental and head traumas in normal population. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between dental traumas, such as non-vitality and fracture, and left-handedness. Materials and methods: Twenty three Turkish international professional boxers were included in the study. Existence of teeth that had trauma and loss of vitality in these boxers were investigated. Results: The mean number of non-vital teeth was higher in left-handers than in right-handers for right-lower, left-upper, left-lower, and total regions, but not for the right-upper region. A gram-positive bacterium that accumulated PHB was isolated from local garden soil in Bangalore. Based on its morphological and physiological properties, and nucleotide sequence (about 1.5 kb) of its 16S rDNA it was identified as Bacillus thuringiensis IAM 12077. In this study the PHB-producing capacity of putative mutant strains of Bacillus thuringiensis IAM 12077 was evaluated. In insects, nodulation is the first step in cellular defense reactions to bacterial, fungal, and some viral infections. The hypothesis was posed that the hemipteran pest E. integriceps produces melantoic nodulation reactions to bacterial challenge and that eicosanoids mediate these reactions. Treating the adult of E. integriceps with Serratia marcescens induced nodulation reactions in a challenge dose-dependent manner. Injecting the adult E. integriceps with eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, immediately before intrahemocoelic injections of the bacterium Serratia marcescens, sharply reduced the nodulation response to bacterial challenges. This report deals with the successful clonal propagation of endangered T. turcica using rhizome cuttings and epicotyl explants. Rhizome cuttings were treated with \alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) before planting for vegetative multiplication. Rhizome cuttings pretreated with NAA (10 mg/L) were both rooted and sprouted (66.6 percent) after 100 days. Application of NAA induced callus and adventitious root formation in epicotyl explants and 6-benzyladenine (BA) induced production of microshoots.
