Image segmentation is an important step in many computer vision algorithms. The objective of segmentation is to obtained an optimal region of convergences (ROC). Error in this stage will impact all higher level activities. This paper focuses on a new efficient method denoted as Complex-Valued Artificial Neural Network with Complex Wavelet Transform (CWT-CVANN) for the segmentation of lung region on chest CT images. In this study, we apply State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) based optimal control technique to a nonlinear tumor growth model. The model consists of three biological cells which are normal tissue, tumor and immune cells. The effect of chemotherapy treatment is also included in the model. Chemotherapy administration is considered as a control input to the nonlinear cancer dynamics and the amount of administered drug is determined by using SDRE optimal control. Maximizing the joint dependency with a minimum size of variables is generally the main task of feature selection. For obtaining a minimal subset, while trying to maximize the joint dependency with the target variable, the redundancy among selected variables must be reduced to a minimum. In this paper, we propose a method based on recently popular minimum Redundancy-Maximum Relevance} (mRMR) criterion. The experimental results show that instead of feeding the features themselves into mRMR, feeding the covariates improves the feature selection capability and provides more expressive variable subsets.

The aim of this study is to investigate the suitability of selected swarm optimization algorithms to the generalized assignment problem as encountered in multi-target tracking applications. For this purpose, we have tested variants of particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization algorithms to solve the 2D generalized assignment problem with simulated dense and sparse measurement/track matrices and compared their performance to that of the auction algorithm. We observed that, although with some modification swarm optimization algorithms provide improvement in terms of speed, they still fall behind the auction algorithm in finding the optimum solution to the problem. The late Campanian-Maastrichtian transgressive sequences of the southeastern Anatolia (northernmost part of the Arabian platform) and only one Maastrichtian limestone block within the ophiolitic association of the easternmost part of the Taurus Orogenic Belt contain very well-preserved specimens of Dictyoptychus Douvillé 1905. Study of Turkish specimens and also of those described in the literature reveals considerable ontogenic variability, hence need for revision of the species of the genus erected hitherto. Taxonomy Of Rudists From The Campanian Transgressive Sediments Of Brašljevica, Donje Orešje And Sv. Martin, Northern Croatia, Alan Moro, Vlasta Cosovic, Josip Benic, Jasmina Dokmanovic

Rudists are common fossils in transgressive Upper Cretaceous deposits in three localities placed in northwestern part of Croatia. Their appearances coincide with the beginning of a transgressive sequence through floatstones-thickets. Within the rudist community, Vaccinites Fischer 1887, Hippurites Lamarck 1801 and Hippuritella Douvillé 1908 could be differentiated according to their general or generic morphological elements. The age of deposits was obtained from the Sr-isotope composition of the rudist shells as well as the micro- and nannofossil community from sediments overlying the rudists-bearing sediments at the Donje Oresje and Brasljevica localities. Specimens of taxa assigned to Pseudosabinia Morris & Skelton, collected from the Campanian-Maastrichtian sequences of different regions of Turkey such as the Kocaeli Peninsula, Amasya, Bayburt (Pontides), Sivas, Malatya, Elazığ (eastern Anatolian platform) and Kahta-Adıyaman and Yaylaçiftliği-Antakya (northernmost part of the Arabian platform), are determined and the taxonomic statuses of the species are discussed. Pseudosabinia klinghardti (Böhm) uniquely presents all the characteristic features of the genus. Other species and subspecies assigned to the genus 'Pseudosabinia' rtanjica (Pejovic), 'Pseudosabinia' serbica (Kühn & Pejovic), 'Pseudosabinia' rtanjica triangularis (Karacabey) and 'Pseudosabinia' rtanjica tunisiensis (Philip) lack the cellular prismatic structure of the outer shell …

The lithological and faunal succession cropping out close to the famous palaeontological locality of Bacevica (Eastern Serbia) is described along a very discontinuous and ill-exposed section. Since the section is dominated by clastic sediments, no-vestige of the so-called 'Vrbovac reef' has been observed. Rhythms consisting of a limestone breccia lower unit and a fossil-rich upper part characterize the base of the section while rare silt and sand-rich limestone breccias and prevailing silty/sandy soils are the lithologies observed in the upper part of the same. The faunal succession shows an alternation of monospecific-paucispecific assemblages and much more diverse assemblages of rudists. …

To evaluate the efficacy of the biphasic and triphasic dynamic multidedector computerized tomography (MDCT) in the preoperative prediction of histological subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and methods: The preoperative dynamic MDCT findings of 51 patients with renal mass who had undergone nephrectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-five of the patients had biphasic (portal and excretory) and 26 had triphasic (arterial, portal, and excretory) MDCT images. Tumor size, presence of calcification, tumor-aorta attenuation values in all phases and homogeneicity of the tumor were noted for every patient. To determine the immunohistochemical expression of CK-19, cErbB2, galectin-3, and p53 in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC). Materials and methods: In this study immunohistochemistry was performed on 23 papillary carcinomas (PCs) and 20 papillary microcarcinomas (PMCs). The extents of staining and intensity were scored semiquantitatively. Results: Of the PC cases 56.5% and of the PMC cases 15.0% were stained strongly by cErbB2. The extent of 2+ staining by galectin-3 was 47.8% in PC, whereas it was only 10.0% in PMC (P = 0.003). To evaluate the effect of caustic esophageal injury (CEI) on the number of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Materials and methods: Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: control, acid, and alkali induced CEI. CEI was performed by the injection of 1 mL of 10% hypochloric acid in the acid group, and 1 mL of 10% sodium hydroxide was injected into the alkali group. Home injuries are a serious public health problem for the elderly. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of home injuries among elderly people in Samsun, Turkey, and the influencing factors. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2007. A questionnaire, the Home-Screen Scale (HSS), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were administered to the elderly subjects. Results: Of all participants, 20.6% had experienced some kind of home injury. Seven participants living alone and 14 living with their families had suffered home injuries, suggesting a statistically significant difference between these 2 groups (P < 0.05). Eleven (14.7%) subjects living in secure housing and 10 (37.0%) living in unsecure housing had suffered home injuries, the difference again being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Home injuries are more common among people living alone and in unsecure housing according to the HSS.

Michauxia nuda A.DC. (Campanulaceae) is recorded for the first time (C8 Siirt province) from Turkey. The diagnostic characters of M. nuda are described and its habitat and conservation status are indicated. Besides, it is illustrated, and a distribution map is presented. Scorzonera ketzkhovelii Grossh. (Asteraceae) was recently collected from Yusufeli, Artvin (north-east Anatolia) and it has been reported as a new species record for the flora of Turkey. It is described and illustrated. In addition, its karyological features and pollen morphology are given.

Juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is an allelochemical responsible for walnut allelopathy. The effects of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}) and kinetin (KIN) on overcoming the effects of juglone stress on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated in barley, wheat, cucumber, alfalfa, and tomato. Seeds pre-treated with plant growth regulators were used to test their effects on the alleviation of juglone stress. It was observed that seed germination in tomato and wheat was inhibited by juglone and that the plant growth regulators alleviated it significantly. The Lower Cheliff plain is among the largest salted soils in north-western Algeria. In order to establish the relationships between the main soil factors and plant species in this stressed ecosystem, 133 relevés related to soil and vegetation were realized. Soil variables measured included electrical conductivity and calcium carbonate. The 133 relevés were arranged in clusters using k-means classification. The similarity analysis used to examine the variation in vegetation assemblage structure showed significant differences in taxonomical composition among groups of relevés. Morphological And Anatomical Studies Of Annual Taxa Of Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae), With Notes On Chorology In Turkey, Ayşegül Güvenç, Hayri̇ Duman

Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae) includes approximately 150 species of annual and perennial plants distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region. In Turkey, 44 species (55 taxa) are native. Three of these species (5 taxa) are annual and these taxa are included in Burgsdorfia and Hesiodia sections. This study was undertaken to investigate the morphological and anatomical properties of 5 annual taxa of Sideritis. Full descriptions and illustrations of these taxa are given, along with some additional information regarding their ecology and phytogeography. The anatomy of the leaf blade, midrib, and stem of the taxa are described and illustrated.

The genus Lophanthus Adans. is recorded for the first time from Turkey. Specimens collected from Van province, east Anatolia, are described here as the new species Lophanthus turcicus Dirmenci, Yıldız & Hedge. Diagnostic characteristics that distinguish it from allied species are presented; a description, distribution map, and taxonomic comments are given.

A New Subspecies Of Stachys Cretica (Section Eriostomum, Lamiaceae) From Turkey, Ekrem Akçi̇çek

Stachys cretica L. subsp. kutahyensis Akçiçek subsp. nova is described as a new subspecies from West Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to Stachys cretica L. subsp. vacillans Rech. f. and Stachys cretica L. subsp. anatolica Rech. f., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and flower characters. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, and taxonomic comments of the new subspecies are given. The geographical distribution of the subspecies is mapped. IUCN threat category and observations on the population are noted.

Twenty-three populations belonging to 10 wild Primula L. (Primulaceae) taxa of Turkey, some of which are morphologically quite similar, were investigated based on nrDNA ITS regions. The plant materials were collected from different geographical areas of Anatolia in vegetation periods of 2005 and 2006. Total genomic DNAs were isolated from the healthy leaves of each population. The entire ITS regions of the populations were amplified by universal primers with the aid of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and then the PCR products were sequenced. The genus Cyclotrichium, a member of the tribe Mentheae subtribe Menthinae (Lamiaceae, Nepetoideae), was analysed with respect to morphological revision, phylogenetic analysis, and cytogenetic properties. All species of the genus were investigated for morphological characters and ITS (internal transcribed spacers) of nrDNA sequence comparison (except C. hausknechtii for ITS). Six members of the genus were also analysed for chromosome numbers. The combined results strongly suggested that Cyclotrichium is a separate genus in Nepetoideae with distinct morphological, phylogenetic, and cytogenetic characteristics. For intrageneric phylogeny of Cyclotrichium, 3 groups were recognised: 1. C. niveum; 2. C. origanifolium; and 3. the remaining 6 …
