Certain formations within the Cretaceous of Texas include zones of silicified rudists. Such diagenetic alteration, combined with the timing of alteration, has preserved many structural features of the rudist suitable for computed tomography (CT scanning). The excellent density differences between those skeletal structures (silica) and the internal sediment (calcitic mud) or later crystallization (calcite), fulfill a fundamental requirement for such analysis. The Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas provides access to a high resolution computed tomography scanning system. This equipment, not identical to medical scanners, provides higher resolution and sophisticated software to analyze the imagery. Several rudist …

The Upper Cretaceous carbonates on the Island of Hvar were deposited within the central Tethyan, intra-oceanic Adriatic carbonate platform (s. str). The Upper Cretaceous stratigraphy of the platform has been described in detail from the neighbouring island of Brac. Following the intra-platform deeper-water carbonate sedimentation of the Dol Formation, the Campanian Pucisca Formation (the Brač 'Marbles' unit) in the area of the town of Hvar are characterized by massive bioclastic rudist-bearing carbonates deposited in relatively deeper subtidal environments. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total peroxide (TP) levels in the blood and seminal plasma of idiopathic infertile patients were compared with those of fertile controls to determine the role of oxidative stress in the etiology of idiopathic male infertility. Material and methods: Thirty-two idiopathic infertile males and 30 healthy, married, age-matched control subjects were included in the study. TAC and TP levels were measured in the blood and seminal plasma, and sperm parameters were studied in both groups. To investigate the effects of adding methylprednisolone to low-potassium dextran solution on cold-preserved ischemic lungs. Materials and methods: The study included 42 rat lung blocks that were divided into 7 groups (n = 6). Lung blocks were preserved in 40 mL of cold Perfadex solution, to which 5, 15, 30, 60, and 120 mg kg-1 (approximately 40, 120, 240, 480, and 960 mg L-1) of methylprednisolone were added. Diabetes is a common cause of polyneuropathy. Cardiac arrhythmias and markedly increased mortality rate have been demonstrated in patients with diabetic neuropathy and also demonstrated that abnormally prolonged QT dispersion interval (QTd) is associated with a higher risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. Hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) cause endothelial dysfunction and may result in cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to assess endothelial dysfunction in essential hypertensives, and normotensive and hypertensive type 2 diabetics and to evaluate the effect of telmisartan on endothelium in hypertensives. The changes in the serum sialic acid levels, total lipid peroxidation products (MDA), and glutathione reductase activity were estimated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Silene bayburtensis Hamzaoğlu & Aksoy sp. nov. is described as a new species from Bayburt province (Turkey). The specimen was collected on a calcareous steppe, in 2 localities, at an altitude between 1700 and 1750 m. The new species is similar to Silene pharnaceifolia Fenzl. The differences between the species are discussed.

Trichome shapes were investigated on the outer and inner surfaces of fruit valves of 43 species of Erysimum L., 20 of which are endemic to Turkey, by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Five species, Erysimum sorgerae Polatschek., E. huber-morathii Polatschek, E. cheiri (L.) Crantz, E. repandum L. and E. vuralii Yild. were identified, in which there are trichomes on the inner surface of fruit valves, which was determined for the first time in these species. Twenty-four new records for freshwater algae of Turkey were determined in a study conducted from February 2007 to January 2009 in Çaygören Reservoir, Balıkesir, Turkey. Among these, 3 were Cyanobacteria, 3 Euglenophyta, 15 Chlorophyta, 1 Charophyta, 1 Heterokontophyta, and 1 was Dinophyta.

The effects of 2 nitrate levels, 14 (CK) and 140 mmol L^{-1} (T), on the leaf gas exchange variables of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Xintaimici) seedlings grown in hydroponic culture were investigated. Photosynthetic light- and CO_{2}-response curves from CK and T seedlings were determined and used for the analysis of photosynthetic capacity. The results showed that nitrate stress resulted in a significant reduction of net photosynthesis of T seedlings compared with CK. At the same time, the apparent quantum yield, light-saturated net photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency, and CO_{2}-saturated net photosynthesis in nitrate-stressed cucumbers also decreased significantly with the increase of …

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) is one of the easiest and most commonly used molecular techniques for genetic variability analysis. In the present study, the genetic diversity of analysis of Bellis perennis L. collected in 4 Turkish geographical locations was investigated by RAPD-PCR analysis. In addition to RAPD, pollen analysis of the 4 plant populations was also conducted. Out of 40 RAPD primers tested, 12 exhibited distinct banding patterns showing 45% to 79% polymorphism. The ecological characteristics of ostracods in Lake Sünnet were monitored monthly between May 2005 and September 2007; 9 living and 5 subfossil ostracod taxa were recorded. Among the species, Ilyocypris getica was reported in Turkey for the first time, while Stenocypria fischeri was found for the second time in the country in 55 years. The most abundant species, Limnocythere inopinata, was collected in dry and wet months, while I. bradyi was the only species found in only the wet months. Growth and reproduction of the blotched picarel, Spicara maena (Linnaeus, 1758), were determined based on specimens (n = 2547) collected from the central Aegean Sea between July 2004 and June 2007. The samples consisted of 71.9% females, 16.2% males, and 11.9% immature individuals. The sex ratio of females to males was 1:0.23. The length-weight relationship was W = 0.011L^{3.02}, W = 0.011L^{3.00}, and W = 0.011L^{2.99} for the combined sexes, females, and males, respectively. The common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is one of the most common and widespread of the Western Palearctic songbirds and breeds primarily in natural forests in the northern, western, and southwestern parts of Turkey. We reevaluated the distribution of this species in Turkey with recent observational data. Although this species has been considered a breeder in southeastern Turkey, results of this study suggest that it probably does not breed in the region any longer. Many amphibian populations are in decline throughout the world, and one of the most important proposed causes for this decline is agrochemicals, especially pesticides. This study considers the effects of 120 h exposure of embryos and larvae of the red-bellied toad, Bombina bombina, to trifluralin, an herbicide, with renewal acute toxicity tests at 22 ± 1 °C. Adult males and females were induced to breed by gonadotropin injection to obtain test organisms. Lethal concentration values were determined through PROBIT analysis. In this study, we established the presence of 25 aquatic beetle (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) species belonging to 5 subgenera from the Bayburt, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, and Trabzon provinces in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Specimens were collected between May 2007 and October 2007. Ten species are here recorded for the first time from the Black Sea region and 6 species are recorded for the first time in the research area. In addition, the habitats of these species found in the research area were given.

A chromosomal study of 2 populations of Allactaga williamsi from Konya province in Central Anatolia, Turkey, was performed. The diploid number of 48 chromosomes was found in all of the 5 specimens examined. All of the chromosomes except the Y were biarmed and could be identified by unique G-banding patterns. The C-banding analysis revealed a considerable amount of constitutive heterochromatin in all chromosomes. The C-band positive regions were distributed mainly in centromeric areas, whereas the Y chromosome stained uniformly and C-negatively. The present contribution outlines a first record of 5 encountered terrestrial gastropods new to Qatar. The preliminary account of these species and their zoogeographical origins are discussed. The species belong to 4 families: Subulinidae, with 2 genera, Zootecus and Allopeas; Polygyridae, with 1 genus, Polygra; Hygromiidae, with 1 genus, Monacha; and Helicidae, with 1 genus, Eobania.

Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). The size of the samples ranged from 3.4 to 15.2 cm total length and the samples were composed of 35.2% females, 25.7% males and 39.1% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.73. The Caspian Sea forms the southern limit of the distribution range of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), but little is known about its life history in this area. A total of 362 specimens were collected from the Gomishan wetland (southeast Caspian Sea, Iran) to describe the stickleback's life history characteristics. The aim of the present study was to describe the mollusk syntaxon associated with Cystoseira barbata and Mytilus galloprovincialis facies, which are widely distributed along the coasts of the Sinop Peninsula, Turkey. Four stations were chosen for each facies at depths of 0.5-5 m, and a total of 32 seasonal samplings were performed with 4 replicate groups between February 2006 and November 2006. The distribution of C-heterochromatin blocks and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the Taurus ground squirrel from Turkey was studied. The karyotype of Spermophilus taurensis comprised 40 chromosomes, the fundamental chromosome number (NF) was 80, and there were 76 autosomal arms (NFa). All autosomes and the X chromosome had pericentromeric C-heterochromatin, whereas the Y chromosome appeared to be entirely heterochromatic. NORs were observed in the terminal regions of the short arm of 2 pairs of submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. All the NORs were homomorphic and of medium size. Notes On Some Egyptian Lacertidae, Including A New Subspecies Of Mesalina, Involving The Seligmann Effect, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Shoshana Ashkenazi

These notes on some Egyptian lacertid lizards contribute to faunal data for the planning of biodiversity conservation. Mesalina bahaeldini curatorum n. subsp. is described from Suez, characterized by coloration and larger (fewer) body scales. Range extensions are documented for Acanthodactylus aegyptius, Mesalina olivieri, and M. rubropunctata. The previously reported occurrence of A. opheodurus in Sinai is doubted. The fact that the M. b. curatorum types were collected in the 1820s demonstrates the importance of museum collections.

A Preliminary Study Of The Freshwater Fauna Of Testate Amoebae Of Southeast Azerbaijan, Nataly Snegovaya, Ilham Alekperov

During 2005-2007, 75 species of the freshwater testate amoebae were found in the vicinities of Lenkoran (SE Azerbaijan). The morphology of 14 species is described. One genus and 3 species are new to science (Difflugia pisciformis sp.n., D. pseudoclaviformis sp.n., Lenkorania gen.n., Pseudodifflugia magna sp.n.). Eleven species are new for the fauna of the Caucasus and Azerbaijan.

Grandidierella Trispinosa, A New Species Of Amphipod From The Karachi Coast, Pakistan (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae), Hala Bano, Quddusi Bashir Kazmi

Grandidierella trispinosa sp. nov., the first species of the genus Grandidierella Coutiére, 1904 from Pakistan, is described from specimens collected at Sandspit backwater, west of Karachi. The new species is illustrated and compared with allied species. The holotype is housed in the Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre, University of Karachi.

A new species, Cryptognathus ayyildizi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Raphignathus bathursti Meyer and Ryke, 1960 (Raphignathidae), and Cheylostigmaeus californicus Summers and Ehara, 1965 (Stigmaeidae) are redescribed, and are new records for the Turkish fauna. Their worldwide distribution is also given.
