The reproductive ecology of Salvia smyrnaea Boiss. (Lamiaceae) on Mount Nif along with their breeding system and reproductive success were examined. S. smyrnaea, distributed over Mount Nif (İzmir Province) at an altitude of 1510 m, is the study material of this research. To detect the stigma receptivity, the Perex test was applied to 25 young and mature flowers. To detect pollen viability, the MTT method was used. This study aimed to provide an assessment of coastal sand dune vegetation through a number of analyses meant to provide a better understanding of the structure of plant communities and the successional stages of coastal sand dunes in a human-induced coastal landscape, the Seyhan Delta in southern Turkey. Therefore, as a baseline data inventory for monitoring, succession and the community-based classification of sand dune vegetation and human impacts were the major concerns of this study. Rains during grain ripening in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) can cause preharvest sprouting (PHS), which drastically affects the grain yield and the baking quality of flour. In the present study, to screen 7 cultivars and 4 lines of spring bread wheat for PHS, germination tests were conducted with seeds obtained from wet spikes harvested immediately after natural rainfall. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of spermidine (Spd) on ameliorating adverse effects of salinity in Troyer citrange seedlings. For this purpose, 6-month-old, uniform-sized seedlings of Troyer citrange were transplanted to plastic containers containing Hoagland nutrient solution. Addition of 75 mM NaCl into the nutrient solution reduced the plant growth, leaf chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fv/Fm), net photosynthetic rate, respiration rate, and total Spd, N, and Ca^{2+} + Mg^{2+} contents of the leaves. The objective of this paper was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model in order to predict monthly mean soil temperature for the present month by using various previous monthly mean meteorological variables. For this purpose, the measured soil temperature and other meteorological data between the years of 2000 and 2007 at Adana meteorological station were used. In this study, 42 bread wheat pure lines obtained from 340 landraces, collected from 35 provinces of 7 regions in Turkey, and 7 modern bread wheat cultivars were evaluated under rainfed conditions in Konya, in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 growing seasons. Experiments were conducted in a 7 × 7 lattice design in 3 replicates. Both genotype-traits (GT) biplot analysis and path analysis were used to investigate the relationships between grain yield and 12 traits. The aim of this study is to investigate in-vitro antimicrobial effects of the essential oils from oregano (Origanum acutidens and Origanum rotundifolium) and thyme (Thymus sipyleus subsp. sipyleus var. rosulans). The chemical composition and antimicrobial attributes of the essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of the plants, of which there were 3 Lamiaceae species, have been studied. Three new racemic vesamicol analogs were successfully prepared in good yields and high purity. All compounds were characterized by both IR and NMR spectroscopy. Compounds (\pm)-5 and (\pm)-6 showed a moderate lipophilicity compared with reference compounds IBVM and DRC140, respectively. However, the lipophilicity of DRC140 and (\pm)-9 showed very similar behaviors.

A decavanadate/chitosan complex was synthesized by crosslinking chitosan with decavanadate anions at a pH of 3. The materials were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The spectroscopic results indicated that the decavanadate/chitosan complex was successfully obtained as result of an ionic crosslinking of the chitosan with decavanadate anions.

A study of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) derived from algogenic organic matter in different drinking water resources was conducted. Seasonal changes in the concentration of AOC at Kamafusa Dam were dependent on the algal cell numbers. Variations in AOC concentrations were found to be more reliant on the AOC-P17 component than the AOC-NOX component. The algal culture experiment showed that extracellular organic matter (EOM) released during the growth of Phormidium tenue in M-11 culture medium led to a significant increase in AOC concentration; however, no significant variations of AOC concentration were observed in CT culture medium containing high amounts of …

In this work, a hard model chemometric method was used to determine the stability constants of copper(II) and mercury(II) complexes with the newly synthesized ligand 5-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)- 2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione in acetonitrile by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The ligand forms stable complexes with both metal cations. The protonation constants of the ligand were also measured in an ethanol-water (1:1) mixture.

The difficulty in managing tuberculosis includes the prolonged duration of the treatment, the emergence of drug resistance, and coinfection with HIV/AIDS. Tuberculosis control requires new drugs that act on novel drug targets to help in combating resistant forms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and reduce the treatment duration. For this purpose, 6-substituted-3(2H)-pyridazinone-2-acetyl-2- (substituted/nonsubstituted acetophenone) hydrazone derivatives were synthesized and their structures were elucidated by elemental analyses, IR, and ^1H-NMR. In this study, 18 new N-octyl, N-decyl, and N-dodecyl substituted o-, m-, and p-methoxy (E)-3- and 4-azachalcones, {4- or 3-[(1E)-3-(4-, 3-, or 2-methoxyphenyl)-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl]-1-alkyl (C_{8,10,12}) pyridinium bromides} (1a-6a, 1b-1b, and 1c-6c), and 4 new o-, and m-methoxy (E)-3- and 4-azachalcones (2, 3, 5, and 6) were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, and Candida albicans. N-Alkyl substituted azachalconium bromides showed good antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 0.42-58.7 \mu g/mL in most cases. A heptamethine cyanine-based sensor (1) was designed and synthesized by incorporating heptamethine cyanine fluorophore and methylpiperazine. Sensor 1 exhibited good response to the change of pH levels, and a large Stokes shift (>100 nm) was obtained. Fluorescent image experiments in living cells further demonstrated its potential applications in biological systems.

The chemistry of Geranium columbinum and G. lucidum volatiles has been studied here for the first time. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by GC and GC-MS, and screened for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity in a microdilution assay. In total, 172 constituents were identified, accounting for 88.1%-96.7% of the detected GC peak areas. The essential oils consisted mainly of fatty acids and fatty acid-derived compounds (65.0%-86.3%). The major compounds of the essential oils were hexadecanoic acid, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, and tetracosane. The antimicrobial assay showed a strong activity of the oil from aerial parts of G. …

The electrochemical behavior of dopamine (DA) was studied at the surface of a 2,2-[1,2 buthanediylbis(nit- riloethylidyne)]-bis-hydroquinone/TiO_2 nanoparticles modified carbon paste electrode (BQTMCPE) in aqueous media using voltammetric and chronoamperometric techniques. It was found that under optimum conditions (pH 8.0), the oxidation of DA at the surface of such an electrode occurred at about 220 mV lower than that of an unmodified carbon paste electrode (CPE). In this study, the synthesis of a novel tetraoxime (LH_4) derivative containing hydrazone side groups, and its transition metal complexes with Ni(II), Cu(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) ions, were reported. The ligand was synthesized by reacting anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2) with terephthaldialdehyde. Polymeric complexes with Ni(II) and Co(II) and binuclear complexes with Cu(II) and Zn(II) of this tetraoxime were isolated. Structural assignments were supported by a combination of ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, HMQC, FT-IR, UV-Vis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), molar conductances, elemental analyses, and magnetic susceptibility.

A new and simple differential pulse polarographic method was developed for the trace determination of As(III) and As(V) species in the same sample. Among several electrolytes, 0.1 M HCl was found to be the most suitable. As(III) had 3 peaks in this medium, and the peak at --0.82 V was chosen because of its peak shape and response to standard additions. In this medium, the limit of detection for As(III) was found to be 1.5 \times 10^{-7} M. Since As(V) is not electroactive, it had to be reduced first into As(III). Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.

A new species belonging to the genus Helochares Mulsant, 1844 (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected in Ordu province, Turkey. The species is described and an identification key to the species of the Helochares lividus group is provided. In addition, Helochares pallens MacLeay, 1825 and Hydrobius convexus Brullé, 1835 are recorded in Turkey for the first time.

Helminth Parasites Of The Eastern Spadefoot Toad,Pelobates Syriacus (Pelobatidae), From Turkey, Hi̇kmet S. Yildirimhan, Charles R. Bursey

Ninety-one eastern spadefoot toads, Pelobates syriacus, were collected from 3 localities in Turkey between 1993 and 2003 and examined for helminths. One species of Monogenea (Polystoma sp.) and 3 species of Nematoda (Aplectana brumpti, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Skrjabinelazia taurica) were found. Pelobates syriacus represents a new host record for Polystoma sp. and S. taurica.

Abraxas pantaria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the spotted ash looper (Light Magpie), is recognized as a new pest of common ash, Fraxinus excelsior (L.) in the eastern part of Turkey. Description of different developmental stages of A. pantaria is given. Its development, biology, damage, and parasitoids were studied in the field (Aras Valley, Karakurt, Sarıkamış, Kars Province) and partly in the laboratory during 2004-2006. A short review of the family Damaeolidae Grandjean, 1965 is provided with the first records of Damaeolus asperatus (Berlese, 1904) and Damaeolus ornatissimus Csiszár, 1962 from Turkey. Identification key to 11 known species of the family is given. Scanning electron microscopy photographs of the newly recorded species are also provided.

The Farasan archipelago is located in the southern Red Sea, off the south-western coast of Saudi Arabia. Around the beginning of the 1990s, these islands were designated as a marine and terrestrial reserve, mainly for the protection of the Farasan gazelle, which is the only wild ungulate present on the archipelago. As far as is presently known, other mammals reported from the islands are 2 or 3 species of bat, the Eastern spiny mouse, possibly 1 rat, and the white-tailed mongoose.
