Quasielastic Light Scattering Studies Of Polypeptides: Evidence For Chain Extension In Solution, Mehmet Bahatti̇n Baysal, Çi̇ğdem Karadağ

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Dynamic light scattering and viscosimetric methods were used to study polypeptides including polyleucine, poly (\gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate), poly (\alpha-L-glutamic acid), and polyproline II. Chain extension showing rod-like and flexible conformations occurred in poly(\gamma -benzyl-L-glutamate) and polyproline II solutions as these solutions were diluted in glacial acetic acid or in a mixed solvent of acetic acid and dichloromethane. The elongation of chains in poly(\gamma -benzyl-L-glutamate) and polyproline II solutions was studied by dynamic light scattering and viscosimetric methods. This nonenzymatic growth of peptide chains provides data on primordial synthesis of protein molecules in the absence of cell machinery and for this reason these …

Synthesis Of Fused Tetrazolone Derivatives, Sevi̇l Özcan, Zeynep Ekmekçi̇, Berk Müjde, Meti̇n Balci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New fused tetrazolone derivatives were synthesized using homophthalic and maleic anhydrides. Treatment of anhydrides with trimethylsilyl azide opened the lactone rings and formed the corresponding intermediates, which bore 1,3-dipole and dipolarophile functionalities in ortho positions. The intermediates partially underwent internal 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to produce fused tetrazolone derivatives. When the carbonyl groups in anhydride were not conjugated with any double bond, then a triazine-fused tetrazolone derivative was formed.

Hepatopancreas Mitochondria Of Mytilus Galloprovincialis: Effect Of Zinc Ions On Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And Metabolism, Antonino De Lisi, Ermelinda Prato, Francesca Biandolino, Giulio Sarli, Donatella Negro, Gianluigi La Piana, Domenico Marzulli

Turkish Journal of Biology

Oxygen uptake, respiratory complexes, and metabolic activities have been studied in mitochondria isolated from the hepatopancreata of Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in the “Mar Grande” of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy). Although exposure to 5.0 µg Zn^{2+}/L resulted in a significant increase of states 3 and 4 respiration with glutamate + pyruvate as respiratory substrate, it was found that the exposure of mussels to different concentrations of Zn^{2+} (2.5–7.5 µg/L) neither inhibited mitochondrial respiration nor exerted any inhibitory effect on representative mitochondrial dehydrogenases. It rather stimulates these activities, producing an extra synthesis of adenosine triphosphate by hepatopancreas mitochondria and possibly increasing its …

Plant Micrornas: New Players In Functional Genomics, Vahap Eldem, Sezer Okay, Turgay Ünver

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, endogenously expressed, and nonprotein coding RNAs that regulate gene expression via post-transcriptional inhibition and cleavage. To date, several plant miRNAs have been identified via direct cloning, high-throughput sequencing, and bioinformatics analyses. The miRNAs participate in RNA-induced gene silencing complex, and specifically repress the target gene transcripts. Thus, miRNAs regulate the expression of genes playing diverse roles in plants, such as root initiation, leaf morphology, flower development, and response to environmental stimuli. A number of miRNAs have been identified and functionally characterized in eukaryotes. In this review, we discuss the functional roles of miRNAs in plant development …
