Rumen Ciliate Fauna (Ciliophora, Protista) Of Turkish Domestic Goats Living In İzmir, Turkey, Gözde Gürelli̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Species composition and distribution of rumen ciliates were investigated in the rumen contents of 15 domestic goats living in İzmir, Turkey. Nineteen species and 10 morphotypes belonging to 7 genera were identified. The mean number of ciliates was (94.3 ± 33.4) × 10^4 cells mL^{-1} rumen contents, which is higher than that of other goat hosts reported from Turkey and the world. The mean number of ciliate species per host was 9.2 ± 3.4. Entodinium semahatae, E. rostratum, and Ophryoscolex purkynjei m. bifidoquadricinctus are new host records for goats. Biological Diversity And Seasonal Variation Of Mesozooplankton In The Southeastern Black Sea Coastal Ecosystem, İlknur Yildiz, Ali̇ Muzaffer Feyzi̇oğlu

In this study, the seasonal distribution of mesozooplankton was investigated between 1999 and 2006 at a station located in the southeastern Black Sea region. A total of 40 cruises were done within the southeastern continental shelf throughout this period in order to collect mesozooplankton samples. A total of 10 mesozooplankton species were identified. A Behavioral Analysis Of Achromatic Cue Perception By The Ant Cataglyphis Aenescens (Hymenoptera; Formicidae), Volkan Aksoy, Yilmaz Çamlitepe

Behavioral responses of Cataglyphis aenescens foragers to various monochromatic light stimuli were tested. Foragers were trained to associate lights of 370 (UV), 440 (blue), 540 (green), and 640 nm (red) with a food reward on a circular orientation platform and were then tested to determine the threshold intensity values of these wavelengths they could perceive. Foragers significantly responded to all wavelengths at training intensities but their homeward orientation diminished with decreasing stimulus intensity. Polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis and densitometry analysis were used to analyze venom extracts of Vipera kaznakovi (16.5, 30, and 55 cm) and Vipera ammodytes (28.5, 36.7, and 51.5 cm) specimens of 3 different lengths. V. kaznakovi specimens were collected from Hopa (Artvin Province); 2 V. ammodytes specimens were from Ağva (İstanbul Province) and the longest one was from Yuvacık (Kocaeli Province). The electropherograms of the venom protein samples showed age-dependent qualitative and quantitative variations.

In this research, 29 species of 11 amphibian and reptile families were detected in the endorheic basin of Akşehir and Eber. Of these species, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 1 is a turtle, 9 are lizards, and 13 are snakes. In addition, the chorotype classification of the species recorded in the study area and their distributions depending on plants are also provided. It was established that specimens of subspecies Ophisops elegans macrodactylus and O. e. centralanatolia were sympatrically found in the vicinity of Ortaköy and Tuzlukçu. Selective Predation On Common Voles By Tawny Owls And Long-Eared Owls In Winter And Spring, Linas Balciauskas, Laima Balciauskiene

We studied size preferences of Tawny (Strix aluco) and Long-eared (Asio otus) Owls preying on common voles (Microtus arvalis) in the winter and spring seasons in Central Lithuania. Regression equations were used for body mass estimations. We found that both A. otus and S. aluco preferred larger M. arvalis than the average available in the population (the average body mass of predated individuals was 21.45 ± 0.12 g compared to 16.42 ± 0.16 g of snap-trapped individuals). Breeding Success Of The Stone Curlew Burhinus Oedicnemus In Nag Valley (1999-2001), Kharan, Pakistan, Muhammad Sajid Nadeem, Tariq Mahmood, Muhammad Mahmood-Ul-Hassan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Variations in different breeding parameters in 2 adjacent populations of the Stone Curlew in Nag Valley were studied. A total of 106 active nests were spotted, with an overall mean clutch size of 1.42 eggs per nest. The nest and egg success of the Lope Valley population was 0.50 and 0.42, respectively, while the nest and egg success of the Kereichi population was 0.60 and 0.45. Poaching of eggs/chicks, habitat shrinkage, overgrazing, and fuel wood collection are thoughts to be the main factors affecting the breeding success of Stone Curlew in the area.

Members of the order Mesostigmata frequently use other animals to colonize suitable habitats, and thus their phoretic exploitation of bark beetles is not exceptional. We compared the abundance and species spectrum of phoretic mites in univoltine and bivoltine populations of the European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. Two localities with high population densities of Ips typographus in the eastern part of the Czech Republic (400 and 1100 m a.s.l.) were studied. This paper highlights the implementation of an intelligent bus monitoring system based on current challenges and problems. In this system, radio frequency identification and integrated sensing technologies, such as a global positioning system, general packet radio service, and geographic information system, are used to monitor the movement of a bus. A new theoretical framework and ruled-based decision algorithms are developed for the system. An experimental setup is developed for the prototype implementation. The results show that the choice of integrated technologies used in the system is suitable to monitor and manage a vehicle transportation system.

This paper investigates the possibility of classifying power system dynamics events using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and a neural network (NN) by analyzing one variable at a single network bus. Following a disturbance in the power system, it will propagate through the system in the form of low-frequency electromechanical oscillations (LFEOs) in a frequency range of up to 5 Hz. In order to verify some doubtful collections of Scleroderma Pers. species from Macedonia, 54 specimens were revised using morphological and molecular analyses. The 12 internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS nrDNA) sequences obtained in this study were compared with previously published sequences included in public databases. According to the barcoding sequences, some Macedonian Scleroderma specimens were confirmed to belong to 4 species: S. areolatum Ehrenb., S. bovista Fr., S. meridionale Demoulin & Malençon, and S. verrucosum (Vaill.) Cystatin responses in sugarcane plants under drought stress have not previously been reported. To test the hypothesis that sugar cane cystatin can function as an osmotic stress tolerance gene, transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) strains with the ability to express sugarcane cystatin were constructed. The osmotic stress tolerance of the transgenic yeasts was then evaluated, and it was found that the transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) had increased growth and increased osmotic stress tolerance. Many studies have been conducted on the effects of fat supplementation on metabolism, milk composition, and improvements in dairy cow reproduction. Troughs are one of the main components of villages in Turkey. They are constructed by converting springs or underground waters. Until now, there has been no extensive study investigating the composition and diversity of trough zooplankton species. In order to contribute knowledge on the zooplanktons in troughs, 142 troughs were randomly sampled from 17 districts in Ankara Province between 22 June and 3 July 2011. Metapopulation characterization and discrimination of the pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata in the northern part of the Persian Gulf is unknown. This study was conducted to examine differences in shell morphology of P. imbricata radiata from the Hendourabi and Lavan islands using principal component analysis (PCA) and elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA). Both EFA and PCA differentiated the shell form of the 2 populations significantly. PCA indicated that the pearl oysters from Hendourabi tended to be longer, while those from Lavan were wider and greater in thickness (width). In this study, the breeding ecology and behaviour of the Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, was studied at Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey. The breeding period started in the first week of May. The incubation period lasted 14 days. As clutch size increased, the diameter of the nests became larger (r = 0.65). Diameters of nests containing different clutch sizes varied significantly from one another (P < 0.01). However, their height did not change (r = 0.24). There was no significant height difference between nests containing different clutch sizes (P > 0.05). As the nests became farther from the shore, the clutch size and the egg weight increased, because mature adults built their nests on the reeds in deeper areas (r = 0.59, r = 0.73). On …

The purpose of the present research was to study the descriptive anatomy of the gill of the mussel Lithophaga lithophaga. Mussels were collected from 2 sites in Antalya Bay, Turkey. Observations using stereomicroscopy and electron microscopy showed that the gills of L. lithophaga consist of homorhabdic filaments, a characteristic of the mytilids. The lamellae have cavities at their laterals in addition to their prominent ciliary structure on the frontal and lateral surfaces. The purpose of this study was to describe the horizontal and vertical distributions of the zooplankton community structure in Karakaya Dam Lake. Rotifers were numerically dominant (81.89%) in the community during the study period; they were followed by Copepoda (10.32%) and Cladocera (7.79%). In the metalimnetic maximum oxygen zone between 5 and 10 m, cladocerans made up 70.1% of the total number of zooplankton in June and 27.3% of the total number of zooplankton in November. This paper is the first record of the exotic cichlid, the redbelly tilapia, Tilapia zillii (Gervais, 1848), from natural freshwater bodies of Iran, which has most likely been deliberately released to enhance fish production. Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new species of Zodarion Walckenaer, 1826 is described based on material collected in the Marmara region of Turkey. Morphological and diagnostic characters and illustrations of the genitalia of both sexes are presented, and the differences with the closely related Zodarion turcicum Wunderlich, 1980 are pointed out.

Revised Classification Design Of The Anatolian Species Of Nannospalax (Rodentia: Spalacidae) Using Rflp Analysis, Teoman Kankiliç, Canan Gürpinar

Genetic differences in 2 regions (D-loop and cytochrome b) of mitochondrial DNA in Nannospalax xanthodon and Nannospalax ehrenbergi were determined using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. For 2 species distributed in Anatolia, 94 specimens from 62 populations of Nannospalax xanthodon and 2 populations of Nannospalax ehrenbergi were studied. To reveal genetic differences, the D-loop (626 bp) and cytochrome b (500 bp) regions of mitochondrial DNA were amplified and then cut by 4 different restriction endonuclease enzymes (BamH-I, Taq-I, Alu-I, and Msp-I). In this paper, we present the results of a study conducted in the Great Ulcinj Beach area, including its hinterland and Ada Island. The Herpetofauna Of Madran Mountain (Aydın, Turkey), Serdar Özcan, Nazan Üzüm

This study investigates amphibian and reptile species of Madran Mountain. Specimens were collected in September 2011 and April and May 2012. A total of 23 species (3 amphibians and 20 reptiles) were determined. These species are thought to contribute to our knowledge of the Turkish herpetofauna. In addition, a chorotype classification of the species determined on Madran Mountain is given.

Evidence of breeding rooks feeding on Roman snails (Helix pomatia) and grove snails (Cepaea nemoralis) is presented. Shell dimensions of food remains and intact Roman snails collected in the study area were measured in order to estimate the size and shape of the snails collected by rooks in relation to the food available in the vicinity of the rookery. Smaller and rounder snail shells were collected by rooks than were available in the area around the colony, indicating that the rooks collected most of the snails elsewhere, in forests, gardens, or ruderal areas located near the colony.
