Turkish Journal of Zoology

The diet of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has been well studied in Europe, but limited information exists about its feeding habits in Greece and in other Mediterranean landscapes. We studied the diet variation of the red fox by analyzing contents from 219 red fox stomachs in central Greece from 2003 to 2005. We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and quasi-distribution generalized linear model (GLM) response curves to investigate whether the trophic groups of the red fox diet varied temporally and/or spatially with environmental factors. Mammals, arthropods, and plants were the most important trophic groups in the diet; in particular, …

Raptors can be parasitized by numerous helminth species due to their feeding behavior. When the parasite load is high, the bird's life can be affected. A total of 21 common buzzards, Buteo buteo, from different districts of Bursa, in Northwest Turkey, were examined for helminth infections. The results of the postmortem examination revealed that 15 of 21 buzzards (71.43%) harbored 1 or more helminth species. Seven species/genera of helminths were detected at the following prevalence rates: ascarid larvae (47.62%), Strigea falconis (38.09%), Neodiplostomum attenuatum (33.33%), Cladotaenia globifera (14.29%), Centrorhynchus amphibius (14.29%), Physaloptera alata (9.52%), and Synhimantus laticeps (4.76%). Allometry Of Head Size And Shape Dimorphism In The Grass Snake (Natrix Natrix L.), Bartosz Borczyk

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was conducted to investigate allometry of head growth patterns in the grass snake (Natrix natrix (Linnaeus, 1758)). Although male and female grass snakes differ in relative head size, their head growth patterns follow similar trajectories. The sexual differences are roughly constant during ontogeny. Most head dimensions grow with negative allometry or isometry with respect to the snout?vent length except head width, which grows with positive allometry in both sexes.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, Ag-nucleolar organizing region (NOR) banding patterns of Myotis myotis and Miniopterus schreibersii were presented. The karyotype of Myotis myotis has a diploid number (2n) of 44, a fundamental number (NF) of 54, and an autosomal fundamental number (NFa) of 50. The 2n, NF, and NFa numbers of Miniopterus schreibersii were 46, 54, and 56, respectively. In Myotis myotis, a homomorphic NOR was localized in 1 of the medium-sized acrocentric pairs; however, NORs were located in 2 pairs on the secondary constriction of Miniopterus schreibersii.

Determination Of The Alui Polymorphism Effect Of Bovine Growth Hormone Gene On Carcass Traits In Zavot Cattle With Analysis Of Covariance, Aytaç Akçay, Bi̇lal Akyüz, Davut Bayram

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the genotypes of bovine growth hormone and to investigate their association with daily weight gain in the Zavot cattle breed. The bovine growth hormone (GH) genotypes of 45 male Zavot cattle were identified by PCR-RFLP. The effect of the bovine growth hormone gene on daily weight gain was estimated from a dataset obtained from cattle up to the age of 9 months. The mean differences of carcass weight or carcass yield among the genotype groups were assessed by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Two alleles for bovine growth hormone locus, L and V, …

Equilibrated semen was frozen at 4 different freezing rates from +5 °C to -150 °C (G10: 10 °C/min, G12: 12 °C/min, G15: 15 °C/min, and G24: 24 °C/min) and stored in liquid nitrogen until use. Semen samples were examined for sperm motility, defective acrosomes (FITC-PSA), and DNA integrity using TUNEL after dilution with extender A at equilibration and postthaw stage. There was no significant difference among the freezing stages in terms of DNA fragmentation (P > 0.05). DNA integrity was partially affected …

Effects Of Dystocia On Milk Production And Reproduction In Subsequent Lactation In A Turkish Holstein Herd, İbrahi̇m Kaya, Can Uzmay, Tarik Ayyilmaz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The study investigated effects of dystocia on milk production, reproduction, calf loss, and cow culling in a Turkish Holstein herd at the Agricultural Faculty, Ege University, İzmir, Turkey. Data were from 653 single calvings between 2006 and 2010. Considering a greater dystocia incidence in primiparous cows, data was divided in two; 223 primiparous and 430 multiparous calvings scored on a 1-to-5 scale. Scores were categorized into no dystocia and dystocia. With few related observations, all multiparous data were excluded since sample size for multiparous dystocic calvings was too small to make reliable estimates. Milk yields, days to first service, and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study used the random amplification of polymorphism DNA (RAPD) technique to evaluate possible DNA damage in the blood cells of Cyprinus carpio exposed to potassium dichromate. Test specimens were exposed to 3 sublethal test concentrations (93.95, 187.9, and 281.85 mg L^{?1}) of potassium dichromate for a period of 96 h. The samplings were collected at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h after exposure. DNA was isolated from the blood samples of both the control and treated groups of C. carpio, and 3 selected decamer primers were used for RAPD-PCR. In comparison to the control, potassium dichromate-treated groups showed …
