Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Novel derivatives of chromenone bearing an $N$-carbamothioyl moiety were synthesized and evaluated for their soybean 15-LOX inhibitory activity. Synthesis of the target compounds was started from 7-hydroxy-2$H$-chromen-2-one. It was reacted with 1-fluoro-2(4)-nitrobenzene to obtain the corresponding nitrophenoxy-chromenone derivative. Reduction of the nitro group was achieved in the presence of Zn/NH$_{4}$Cl and reaction of the latter compound with in situ prepared benzoyl isothiocyanate led to the formation of the title compounds. All compounds were characterized and tested against soybean 15-LOX. Among them, 4-methyl-$N$-((4-((2-oxo-2$H$-chromen-7-yl)oxy)phenyl)carbamothioyl)benzamide (7l) showed the best activity as potent as the reference drug, quercetin.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is investigated as a possible alternative to remove organic compounds from aqueous synthetic solution. This paper presents a comprehensive study towards a better understanding of phenolic compound retention mechanisms during UF processes. Thus, removal of phenol and resorcinol was studied using a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration (PES-UF) membrane. The influence of main operating conditions (feed concentration, transmembrane pressure, and pH) on the retention was evaluated. Membrane--solute interactions were found to play an important role during the process, suggesting the adsorption of the target compounds on the PES-UF membrane. The level of adsorption was consequently evaluated by measuring the quantity of …

The Application Of Mesenchymal Progenitor Stem Cells For The Reduction Of Oxidative Stress In Animals, Edyta Wojtas, Andrzej Zachwieja, Anna Zwyrzykowska, Robert Kupczynski, Krzysztof Marycz
Turkish Journal of Biology
Oxidative stress is the primary cause of lowering of the body's immune status. It arises as a result of intense metabolic processes in humans and animals that involve a decrease in antioxidant enzymes activity at the expense of increased production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consequently, this leads to oxidation of lipids, proteins, DNA, and RNA, causing cell proliferation reduction, faster cell aging, and subsequent degradation. Currently, there is a search for methods to maintain an oxidation-antioxidant balance. The results of many authors' research point to the effectiveness of the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in …

The use of transition metal complexes as appropriate analogues to cisplatin and similar anticancer drugs nowadays is of utmost importance. The inertness of Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Rh(III) complexes and the choosing of convenient ligands could offer a possible advantage in comparison to Pt(II) complexes. These advantages could be attributed to the better anticancer activity and fewer possible side effects. In this paper, we have chosen three complexes of different transition metal ions, [(TLtBu)PdIICl]ClO4, [RhIII(LH2tBu)Cl3], and [PtIV(LH2tBu)Cl3]Cl (where TLtBu is 2,6-bis[(1,3-di-tert-butylimidazolin-2-imino)methyl]pyridine and LH2tBu is 2,6-bis(5-tert-butyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine), for biological tests. All three complexes exerted strong prooxidative and cytotoxic effects on the human colorectal …

The dopamine transporter (DAT) plays a role in the termination of dopaminergic neurotransmission; thereby it is accepted as the primary target of various psychostimulants. N-terminal phosphorylation of DAT has been proposed as a regulator in different DAT functions, such as amphetamine-induced efflux or PKC/PKA-mediated responses. To understand the role of N-terminal conformational changes in dopamine transporter structure and function, the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) method was applied to various DAT constructs fluorescently labeled at the N-terminus and substrate-induced conformational changes were determined using rhodamine-labeled cocaine analog JHC1-64 in three DAT mutants. The results indicated that the construct with YFP …

Genetic deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS) due to mutations in the GALNS gene results in the pathogenesis of Morquio A syndrome. To date, more than 200 mutations have been reported in GALNS, resulting in variable clinical features. For this reason, bioinformatics analysis of these mutations is important to determine their effect on the structure and functions of the protein and to establish a correlation between genotype and phenotype. In the present study, eight Pakistani consanguineous families with Morquio A syndrome were clinically and genetically evaluated. Linkage analysis followed by sequence analysis of the gene detected four novel (p.Phe216Ser, p.Met38Arg, p.Ala291Ser, …

Salt-induced land degradation has gradually increased in several major irrigation schemes within arid and semiarid regions. To maximize crop productivity under saline conditions, either salt tolerance crops should be cultivated or areas should be desalinated. One of the most promising and cost-effective ways to maximize crop productivity is to use salt tolerant plants to remove salt from the soil. For this study, four levels of saline soils were cultivated with the halophyte species Salsola soda L. and Portulaca oleracea L. in pots. The soils had the following salinity levels: 1) nonsaline soil (NSS, 0.9 dS m-1), 2) slightly saline soil …

Pollen from four date palm cultivars (Medjool, Zahidi, Khadrawy, and Deglet Noor) was selected to study the effect of pollenizers on Medjool female production and fruit characteristics. The study was conducted during the 2016 season in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico. Three bunches of each of the four selected female palms were pollinized by each source of pollen. Results were statistically analyzed using the ANOVA test. Set percentage and fruit characteristics showed a significant effect depending on the selected pollenizer. Bunches pollinized with the Zahidi cultivar had the highest fruit set percentage at 50.30%, while bunches pollinized with the Khadrawy …

The effects of water stress on some growth and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were investigated in two native black poplar (Populus nigra L.) clones (Kocabey and Gazi) and in two hybrid poplar (Populus × euramericana (Dode) Guinier) clones (I-214 and I-45/51) to determine which among the four clones is the best adapted to water-stress conditions. The potted seedlings were grown under three watering regimes. As a result of the applied watering regimes, the predawn water potential (ψ pd) of seedlings was maintained at about -0.3, -0.9, and -1.6 MPa in control, moderate, and severe water-stress treatments during the experiment, respectively. …

This study aimed to determine the promotion of the growth and nutrient uptake of Camellia japonica seedlings in coastal lands by bacterial inoculation. Soil salinity reduces plant growth and development in coastal areas due to the osmotic stress that perturbs nutrient uptake. The soil electrical conductivity at the sites of this study ranged from 1.02 to 1.89 dS m-1. Application of chemical fertilizer resulted in the limited uptake of nutrients in seedlings under saline conditions as well as a low nutrient content in the soil caused by leaching, with no significant influence on the growth of the seedlings. However, Bacillus …
