Chordoma is a slowly growing and invasive bone tumor with a tendency to metastasize locally in advanced stages. It is essential to discover new therapeutics that target genes involved in the metastasis of chordoma. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) might robustly influence the metastasis of a tumor bulk. To our knowledge, this is the first time to show that EMT might have a role in chordoma metastasis. In this study, we aim to investigate the possible role of Twist, a key player transcription factor of EMT, in chordoma metastasis. The TWIST gene was silenced by short hairpins in chordoma cell line MUG-Chor1 …

Type 1 diabetes is clinically characterized as the loss of control of glucose homeostasis due to the reduced number of insulinproducing cells. Long-term glycemic control after implantation could be maintained by preserving the cell viability and tissue-specific functions during the process of microencapsulation. In this study, alginate solution was supplemented with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to improve the viability and preserve the cell functions during the encapsulation of a beta cell line (BRIN-BD11). Cell viability was assessed and insulin secretion and insulin stimulation index were evaluated. The polymerization of alginate with PRP enhanced the viability up to 61% in the alginate …

Thiamine is a major vitamin that acts as a cofactor in energy metabolism in all organisms, as well as in lipid and amino acid metabolisms, and is associated with many diseases. It is known that glucose starvation decreases the intracellular thiamine pool while increasing oxidative stress tolerance. Earlier, in whole genome analysis, we detected major differences in the expression of genes related to thiamine pathway against oxidative stress in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We investigated the effects of oxidative stress and glucose repression to thiamine pathway in S. pombe by comparing some genes encoding key enzymes of each related pathway at the …

Phenotypic Plasticity And Specialization Along An Altitudinal Gradient In Trifolium Repens, Fati̇h Fazlioğlu, Justin S.H. Wan, Stephen P. Bonser
Turkish Journal of Botany
Phenotypic plasticity and specialization represent seemingly contrasting strategies to heterogeneous environments. Specialization is associated with the loss of phenotypic plasticity, particularly in functional traits. However, it is equivocal if this loss of plasticity is observed only in the specific habitat and stress type where the specialization occurs or a general loss of plasticity is seen across habitats. We examined populations of Trifolium repens L. following an expansion during the colonization of Australia from relatively good low altitude habitats to more stressful high altitude habitats in the Blue Mountains region, New South Wales, Australia. We examined if specialization to abiotic stress …
