We aimed to compare the results of the treatment of the patients with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) by mechanical lysis and steroid hylase injection via epiduroscopy due to their stabilization status and to detect the effect of pathological diagnostic markers on prognosis and ongoing treatment protocol. Materials and methods: Eighty-two patients with FBSS symptoms were included. Two groups were composed as group I (stabilized) and group II (nonstabilized). All patients were evaluated using the oswestry disability index (ODI) and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores before and after treatment at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and using the patient …

Background/aim: Sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 2 (S1PR2), a member of the seven-transmembrane receptor family, can be activated by its natural ligand sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) to initiate signal transduction and is involved in a wide range of biological effects such as immune cell migration and vascular permeability. Its relationship with neuropathic pain (NP) has not been reported. In this study, the effects of S1PR2 on the development of NP were studied.Materials and methods: We generated a model of NP by partial sciatic nerve ligation (pSNL). The 50% paw withdrawal threshold of the wild-type (WT) group and the S1PR2 deficiency group were measured …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) play a pivotal role in the process of acute lung injury (ALI), which can be induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Numerous reports have indicated that both miR-33 and RIP140 are involved in the inflammatory response in macrophages. In this study, we sought to investigate whether miR-33 and RIP140 participate in ALI induced by LPS.Materials and methods: First, we isolated and identified PMVECs from BALB/c mice. Subsequently, both PMVECs and BALB/c mice were treated with PBS, LPS, or pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) plus LPS and divided into three groups: control (PBS), LPS (LPS), and L+P (LPS plus …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Ruxolitinib, a JAK/STAT signaling pathway inhibitor targeted drug, has been approved for the controlling of disease symptoms and splenomegaly in patients with myeloproliferative neoplastic diseases. Recently, it has been proposed that ruxolitinib-induced JAK/STAT pathway inhibition in myelofibrosis is associated with an elevated frequency of aggressive B-cell lymphomas. However, the biological basis and significance of this pharmacobiological adverse event is unknown. The aim of this bioinformatics study is to detect any possible confounding effects of ruxolitinib on the genesis of lymphoproliferative disorders. Materials and methods: The gene expression data were retrieved from the E-MTAB-783 Cancer Genome Project database. Gene expression …

Background/aim: Turkey accepts refugees from many countries, principally Syria. More than 2.7 million refugees live in Turkey. We evaluated the neonatal outcomes of refugees. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and demographic characteristics of refugee infants born in our hospital between August 2013 and September 2016. Results: Refugees (718 Syrian, 136 Iraqi, 32 Afghani, and 21 of other nationalities) accounted for 907 of 49,413 births. The mean refugee maternal age was lower than that of Turkish women, whereas the gestational age (GA) and birthweight were similar. Refugees required fewer cesarean sections but exhibited greater small- and large-for-GA rates (P < 0.05). Refugee and Turkish infant mortality rates did not differ significantly (0.8 vs. 0.4%). Eighty-nine (12.3%) refugee neonates and 6682 (13.5%) Turkish neonates were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Jaundice and perinatal asphyxia were significantly more common in refugees, whereas respiratory distress syndrome, GA ≤32 weeks, and infant birthweight

Mir-9 Promotes The Phenotypic Switch Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells By Targeting Klf5, Xiaochun Lu, Shitang Ma, Bo Zhou, Tieling Li
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Diabetic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are characterized by increased proliferation and migration. Small noncoding microRNAs (miRNAs) have been considered critical modulators of the VSMC phenotypic switch after an environmental stimulus. However, microRNA in high glucose-induced proinflammation and its atherogenic effect is still ambiguous. Materials and methods: The technique of qRT-PCR was used to examine the expression of miR-9 in VSMCs. The downstream signaling protein relative to miR-9 regulation, Krüppel-like factor 5, and some marker genes of contractile VSMCs were analyzed by western blotting and qRT-PCR. Luciferase reporter assay was used to detect the expression of KLF5, which is …

A Nasopharyngeal Inflammatory Polyp In A Cat: Histopathology, Immunohistochemistry, And Ct Scan Findings, Hamid Reza Moosavian, Hamideh Esmaeilzadeh, Ramesh Vahabi, Rana Vafaei, Mohammad Reza Esmailinejad
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The etiology of feline nasopharyngeal inflammatory polyps (FNIPs) has not been completely understood. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study having evaluated the immunohistochemical features of FNIPs. More studies about the histopathological characteristics of such lesions can play a pivotal role in further understanding the disease. We present the clinical manifestations, computed tomography (CT) scan, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry features of a FNIP in a 7-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat. CT scan examination showed nasopharyngeal space occupation with some parts of destruction in nasal cavity. Immunohistochemical study of the sections demonstrated the presence of CD3$^{+}$ lymphocytes, and …

This study was conducted to detect polymorphisms of BPI gene exon 10 by PCR-RFLP in Meishan pigs and their associations with some important cytokine levels (IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TGF-1ß, IFN-γ, TNF-α) and reproductive traits (total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), birth litter weight (BLW), and weaning litter weight (WLW)), with the aim of identifying effective genetic markers for molecular breeding. The results revealed three genotypes, including AA, AB, and BB, with the trend of AA > BB > AB in reproductive traits. Pigs with the AA genotype were significantly higher than the AB genotype in TNB and IFN-γ …

In this study, findings of morphological deformation observed on a blue crab sampled in Köyceğiz Lagoon (Muğla, Turkey) are presented. The deformation is in the left lateral spine. It has been observed that this spine, which normally should have been one, developed as two independent spines. Due to this abnormality observed in the individual, the individual has two carapace widths.

The patient in this case report was a male Golden Retriever dog, approximately 5 years of age, found in woodlands and presenting with an inability to use the right hindlimb. In craniocaudal and mediolateral radiographs taken of the patient, presence of an old comminuted fracture caused by a firearm injury was observed in the right femoral condyle. A custom-made trochlear groove of suitable dimensions for the patient was produced. The patient tip-toed on postoperative day 1 and was seen to be mostly weight-bearing by day 7. The lameness was determined to have lessened to a great extent after 1 month …

Body length and weight measurements and histological samples were collected from slaughtered Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) that were fattening under farming conditions for the determination of oocyte development in February 2015 (n = 10), May 2015 (n = 1), June 2015 (n = 1), July 2015 (n = 9), and July 2016 (n = 3) during harvest and soon after newly dead. The developmental phases of oocytes were evaluated based on their diameters, fork body length and weight of fish, surface water temperature, and species' reproduction season. According to the histological results, the oocytes were at the beginning of …
