This study examined the effects of hydropriming and nanopriming on the germination and physiological parameters of sugar beet seeds. Seeds were treated with distilled water as a traditional method and with TiO2 nanoparticle solutions at concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 ppm as an advanced method. Seeds were soaked for 3, 6, and 9 h, followed by postpriming maintenance for 10 and 45 days. T he results indicated no statistically significant differences in germination rates between the control and primed groups. Both priming methods markedly increased alpha-amylase activity and chlorophyll content, indicating improved metabolic and photosynthetic potential. Notably, nanopriming for …

Modeling Global Ecological Niche Shifts Of Osyris Spp. Under Climate Change Scenarios: Conservation Priorities For A Threatened Genus, Meng Ting-Yao, Han Shun-Long, He Xiang-Tian, Wu Ya-Ni, Fengjuan Mou

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Osyris L. comprises ecologically and economically important evergreen shrubs or small trees, with particular African species currently threatened by unsustainable exploitation. This study projected potential ecological niche shifts for Osyris under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) using digitized herbarium specimen localities and 20 environmental variables. The genus currently occupies a broad range between 41.32°N–34.85°S latitude and 9.27°W–109.03°E longitude, at elevations from 0 to 3900 m. High-suitability areas cluster primarily in the European-Mediterranean region, eastern/southern Africa, western South America, and Southeast Asia. Shallot, a strategic horticultural commodity in Indonesia, is susceptible to biotic stress (e.g., twisted disease) and abiotic stress (e.g., drought). Mycorrhizal fungi offer an environmentally friendly solution to enhance plant resilience. This study evaluated the effects of mycorrhizal application on shallot plants against twisted disease (Fusarium acutatum) and drought stress. Using a randomized complete block design, we assessed growth, disease resistance, and physiological responses. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s honestly significant difference test at a 95% confidence level. Results indicated that mycorrhizal application reduced both the severity and rate of twisted disease development in shallots. …

The poppy (Papaver) has beautiful flowers that attract the attention of not only taxonomists but also the public. However, it also presents several taxonomic problems. This study examines 13 taxa of Papaver sect. Viruses that naturally infect fungi capable of forming mycorrhizal symbioses remain poorly studied. In the present study, a new partitivirus associated with the basidiomycete mycorrhizal fungus Lactarius mediterraneensis was identified and characterized, and it was designated as Lactarius mediterraneensis partitivirus 1 (LmPV1). The complete genome of LmPV1 was determined through high throughput sequencing of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) extracts and confirmed by Sanger sequencing of RLM-RACE PCR amplicons. Soil salinization is a critical global challenge, threatening agricultural productivity by imposing osmotic stress, ionic toxicity, and oxidative imbalance in plants. This study investigated the potential of Serendipita indica biopriming to enhance salt stress tolerance in maize (Zea mays L. cv. Simon) seedlings through comprehensive physiological and biochemical analyses under controlled conditions. Maize seeds were bioprimed with different concentrations of mycorrhizal fungi S. indica spores and exposed to varying NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, and 200 mM). Low doses of lead (Pb) ions were used in the present study to investigate their effects on photosynthetic efficiency in Brassica juncea. Plants of B. juncea grown for 30, 45, and 60 days were analysed for root and shoot length, pigment content, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, primary and secondary metabolites, and nonenzymatic antioxidant responses under exposure to hormetic doses of Pb2+. The findings show that low levels of Pb2+ (especially 18- and 36-µM Pb treatments) improve gas exchange metrics, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, root and shoot growth, and increased amounts of chlorophyll, carotenoid, xanthophyll and low amounts of pheophytin as compared …

Increasing plastic pollution has become a critical environmental issue, leading to  challenges in management. Specifically, microplastics (MPs) are of particular concern  because they can persist in aquatic ecosystems and adversely affect marine  organisms. Eyelids play a crucial role in protecting the eyes of vertebrates; however, certain  reptile species, such as Ophisops elegans, completely lack movable eyelids. In this  study, we present the first video-documented evidence of a blink-like reflex in O.  elegans, captured through endoscopic field observations and corroborated by laboratory video analysis. The observed movement consisted of a brief convex  deformation of the ocular surface, lasting approximately 0.3 s and resembling a blink  despite the presence of a fixed transparent brille. Since its introduction into Serbian watercourses, the invasive Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) (Prussian carp) has spread rapidly. This paper provides an up-to-date overview of the sex ratio, age structure, and growth parameters in Serbian  populations of this fish and describes how growth varies in two contrasting  ecosystems: lotic and lentic. A total of 133 individuals were sampled. The individuals  from lentic habitats were longer on average, with no significant differences in average  weight or age between the two ecosystem types. Ground beetle (Carabidae) species diversity and spatial distribution were surveyed  across five habitat types along an elevational gradient on Davraz Mountain, a  biogeographical transition area in southwestern Türkiye. The analyses showed that  habitat heterogeneity—particularly soil moisture and texture—exerts a stronger  influence on carabid diversity than elevation. Sørensen’s and Jaccard similarity  indices showed strong faunal overlap between some sampling areas, while  multivariate principal components and canonical correspondence analyses verified  distinct environmental gradients influencing community structure. The common sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is an invasive fish found in Siberian  water bodies, the trophic interactions and impact on local ecosystems of which  remain poorly understood. Traditional diet analyses are limited by the mechanical  damage to the prey. For the present study, therefore, we employed DNA  metabarcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) gene to analyze the digestive  tract contents of the common sunbleak obtained from Irkutsk Reservoir. This study documents and interprets bioerosion and encrustation traces on Upper Cretaceous scleractinian corals from the Hajajah Member of the Aruma Formation in northern Khashm Buwaibiyat, central Saudi Arabia. Fieldwork in 2023 and 2024 involved detailed bed-by-bed stratigraphic logging, ichnological assessment, and fossil collection across marl and limestone units. A total of 213 coral specimens with bioerosional features were analyzed, leading to the identification of 10 ichnospecies across 5 ichnogenera, including Gastrochaenolites, Entobia, Caulostrepsis, Rogerella, and Labyrintichnus. These traces reflect a range of ethological categories, primarily domichnia, indicating permanent dwelling structures by polychaetes, sponges, bivalves, barnacles, and crustaceans. The Hajajah …

The karst-type bauxite deposits located in southwestern Türkiye represent the most significant bauxite resources in the country. Surrounding these bauxite deposits are widespread red soil deposits of varying sizes, developed over lithologically diverse rocks. This study aims to investigate the origin of these red soils, which were examined in two distinct groups based on their spatial relationship to the underlying geology. Currently, grayscale images are preferred as input data for some specific vision tasks. Decolorization is the transformation of a color image into a grayscale image. Efficient decolorization algorithms can improve the overall task efficiency, while perceptual preservation in decolorization can provide more information for further processing. In recent research, traditional methods focus on preserving contrast or detail information with little attention to perceptual features. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic organic compounds that have not been extensively studied in natural environments. The current study aimed to explore how PFASs, including perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexanoate (PFHxA), perfluorotetradecanoate (PFTeDA), and perfluorobutanoate (PFBA), affect rice plants and influence their metabolism. These substances had a notable impact on root and shoot growth, reducing fresh and dry weights across various treatments compared to the control. These attributes were the least affected by PFOS treatment. PFBA treatment had significant adverse effects on chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll levels, followed by the effects of PFHxA and PFTeDA. …

Spectral analysis methods can nondestructively assess the quality of agricultural products but are limited by imaging speed and equipment costs. Therefore, they have not yet been fully integrated into engineering practices. This paper presents JujubeNet, a two-stage hyperspectral reconstruction model for detecting moisture content in jujubes. The first stage utilizes a generative pretrained Pix2Pix generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate RGB images of jujubes that mimic real camera styles and are pixel-to-pixel aligned with hyperspectral images. This study investigates the impact of long-term fertilization modes on crop health and productivity using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted monitoring and a Q-learning-based approach for optimized fertilization strategies. An approximate state-matching Q-learning algorithm was developed to improve the efficiency of agricultural UAVs in fertilization tasks. The spatiotemporal patterns of cultivated land productivity under different fertilization regimes were analyzed in a long-term experiment. An evaluation system for cultivated land health productivity was established. The results indicated that the Q-learning algorithm enabled UAVs to achieve efficient task completion. QLASM outperformed traditional methods on all metrics. QLASM achieved a 92% task completion rate …

This study investigates the optimal mixing ratios of common vetch (Vicia sativa L., CV) and oats (Avena sativa L., O) for enhanced forage yield and quality in the ecological conditions of Erzurum Province. The research was conducted over two growing seasons with three replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Specifically, three common vetch cultivars (Gülhan, Albayrak, Kubilay) and one oat cultivar (Kupa) were evaluated by sowing as sole crops and in different ratios (25% vetch + 75% oat, 50% vetch + 50% oat, 75% vetch + 25% oat). Sugar bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a legume of notable nutritional and functional value, and its genotypes have substantial variation in bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, mineral composition, and enzyme inhibition properties. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the biochemical and functional diversity of 10 sugar bean genotypes using data mining algorithms to identify superior candidates for functional food and nutraceutical development. Background/aim: The present study investigates the role of Shenfu injection in the treatment of yang-deficient chronic heart failure (CHF). Materials and methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were modeled for yang-deficient CHF by abdominal aortic coarctation. Echocardiography was performed to detect changes in cardiac function, and serum N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide proteins (NT-proBNP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and ferroptosis-related factors were measured using ELISA kits. Background/aim: Oxidative stress is a major contributor to melanocyte dysfunction and hair graying by impairing key signaling pathways. Eucommia ulmoides bark extract (EUE), rich in antioxidant phytochemicals, has shown potential in combating oxidative damage. This study investigated the protective and promelanogenic effects of EUE under hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)-induced oxidative stress, with a focus on the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Materials and methods: An oxidative stress model was established using B16 cells and a C57BL/6 mouse hair follicle model.
