Trace Elements And Physical Activity In Children And Adolescents With Depression, M. Meti̇n Donma, Orki̇de Donma Jan 2010

Trace Elements And Physical Activity In Children And Adolescents With Depression, M. Meti̇n Donma, Orki̇de Donma

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Depression is a common mental health problem among adolescents. Depressive symptoms are also important and may appear even during the preschool period. Physical activity, which may improve some mental health problems, is inversely associated with depression. Due to the presence of some clinical evidence about the relation between the use of antidepressants and suicide, there is a need for supportive agents during antidepressant therapy. Within this context, essential trace elements gain importance for further consideration. Protection of the developing brain from the negative effects of iron deficiency is important because of iron deficiency's association with poor mental development. Reactions between …

Determination of fat and fat-free mass is of considerable interest in evaluation of nutritional status. The aim of the present study was to determine whether using arm fat area (AFA) is helpful in identifying abdominal obesity (waist circumference > 90^{th} percentile) in Turkish children and adolescents with high risk. According to AFA ≥ 85^{th} percentile indicating overweight, we determined age- and gender-specific cut-offs from anthropometric indices. Materials and methods: This study was conducted with 5358 (2621 boys, 2737 girls) children and adolescents aged 6-17 years. Height, weight, arm span, waist circumference (WC), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), and triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) …

Materials and methods: In this clinical cohort, records of 218 patients were collected between January 1998 and December 2007. The patients’ demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results were analyzed to compare patients who never had peritonitis and patients with at least one episode of peritonitis. Independent predictors …

Oxidative Stress In Shaal Sheep Of Different Age Groups, Jamileh Salar-Amoli, Ali Baghbanzadeh Jan 2010

Oxidative Stress In Shaal Sheep Of Different Age Groups, Jamileh Salar-Amoli, Ali Baghbanzadeh

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of a number of diseases and aging. In this cross-sectional study, some oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA] as a lipid peroxidation biomarker, ferric reducing/antioxidant power [FRAP], and total nonprotein SH groups) in plasma samples of Shaal ewes of different age groups were assessed. For all 3 measured parameters, the youngest age group (10-30 months old) had the lowest amounts. Although FRAP levels increased slightly and age dependently, nonprotein SH group content showed a decreasing trend after a peak in the 31-50 months group. The highest MDA concentration was observed …

Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were separately evaluated for females and males as follows: L_{\infinity} = 19.66, K …

High Frequency Plant Production Via Shoot Organogenesis And Somatic Embryogenesis From Callus In Tylophora Indica, An Endangered Plant Species, Aastha Sahai, Anwar Shahzad, Mohammad Anis

Turkish Journal of Botany

An efficient and reproducible protocol has been developed for the in vitro production of an endangered medicinal climber Tylophora indica (Burm.f.) Merr. via leaf explants. Different types of calli produced on benzyladenine (BA) and thidiazuron (TDZ) supplemented Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium were selected for shoot induction and somatic embryogenesis studies. Calli when transferred from BA (5 µM) and TDZ (2.5 µM) to MS medium containing BA (5 µM) resulted in high frequency shoot induction (26.8 ± 0.97 shoots/culture) along with somatic embryogenesis (10.20 ± 0.37 embryoids/culture) up to 3 subculture passages. Embryological And Cytochemical Features Of Scilla Autumnalis L., Zeynep Mi̇ne Coşkun, Meral Ünal Jan 2010

Embryological And Cytochemical Features Of Scilla Autumnalis L., Zeynep Mi̇ne Coşkun, Meral Ünal

Turkish Journal of Botany

Nucellar epidermal cells in the micropylar region of Scilla autumnalis L. differentiate into a nucellar cap. It secretes a PAS-positive exudate filling the micropyle. A group of cells at the chalazal end of the nucellus forms a hypostase. Close to the antipodals, the hypostase cells contain abundant starch grains, suggesting a function as a storage tissue. Another ovular structure is the obturator. It secretes an exudate that stains deeply with PAS reaction, and it takes a role in directing the growth of pollen tubes toward the micropyle. Cytochemical tests in the mature embryo sac indicate the presence of high amounts …

Interference Elimination Studies During The Determination Of Trace Elements In Cow Liver Using Differential Pulse Polarography, Ümmi̇han T. Yilmaz, Güler Somer

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The liver is known to accumulate many trace elements; thus it is very important to determine their level in a sensitive way. The objective of this study was to develop a simple method for the simultaneous determination of trace elements in cow liver in which the elimination of interference can be accomplished. It was observed that Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu ions could not be determined correctly in the presence of Se(IV), because of interference of Se. It was shown that this interference could be eliminated by using pH 8.5 NaAc electrolyte. In this medium first Cd and Zn were …

Enhanced Adventitious Shoot Regeneration From Aerial Stem Explants Of Ginger Using Tdz And Its Histological Studies, Adinkudikuyyal Lincy, Bhaskaran Sasikumar

Turkish Journal of Botany

A protocol for direct plantlet regeneration from aerial stem explants of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) has been developed. Adventitious shoots and roots were regenerated from in planta aerial stem explants of 2 ginger varieties viz. var. 'Jamaica' and var. 'Varada'. Maximum shoot and root regeneration were observed in the cultures containing TDZ and IBA (1:1; 1:0.1 mg L-1) in both varieties. Cultures containing TDZ alone showed poor shoot and root formation. Histological studies revealed that the shoot initials originated from the primary thickening meristem and apical meristem, while the root primordial originated from the primary thickening meristem present in the …

Before and after these periods, fasting blood samples were obtained, and oxidant (as MDA) and antioxidant (as SOD) parameters were studied in erythrocytes. Also, plasma samples were obtained from the subjects. Results: In the erythrocyte hemolysate, MDA (malondialdehydes) levels and SOD (superoxide dismutase) activities were found to be lower (P < 0.01) in the second samples compared to the first ones. Conclusion: We think that because free radical production was decreased SOD activities were not increased. Our results show that reduced peroxidation processes caused by Maraş grape consumption suggest that grape consumption has beneficial effects in elderly subjects.
