Background/aim: To compare plasma vitamin D concentrations among patients with normal cognitive function (control group), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer disease (AD). Materials and methods: In total, 158 patients with AD, 228 patients with MCI, and 603 control subjects were included. Plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured after comprehensive geriatric assessment and compared among groups. SPSS 15.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Mean levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were significantly different among the 3 groups of AD patients, MCI patients, and controls (P < 0.001). Post hoc analysis revealed that the levels were significantly lower in the MCI group than the control group (P = 0.002) and significantly lower in the AD group than the control group (P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis showed that age (OR: 1.070, 95% CI: 1.025-1.116, P = 0.002), instrumental activities of daily living score (OR: 0.920, 95% CI: 0.850-0.995, P = 0.037), 25-hydroxyvitamin D level (OR: 0.959, 95% CI: 0.932-0.987, P = 0.004), and diabetes mellitus (OR: 2.476, 95% CI: 1.153-5.319, P = 0.020) were factors independently associated with AD. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is a correlation between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and cognitive functions.

Background/aim: Malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). In this study, we aimed to screen for malnutrition and geriatric syndromes and seek their associations in patients with AD. Materials and methods: The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Katz Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) tests were applied. Background/aim: Nosocomial bloodstream infection (BSI) increases mortality rates, duration of stay in hospital, and treatment costs. This study was conducted to determine the rate and the risk factors of BSIs among intensive care unit patients. Materials and methods: Sixty-four patients with BSIs (patient group) and 79 patients without a nosocomial infection (control group) were enrolled in the study. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria were used for diagnosing BSIs. Potential risk factors were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression model. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the availability of osteoprotegerin (OPG) as a marker of atherosclerosis and compare serum OPG levels with ankle-brachial index (ABI) in diabetic patients. Materials and methods: A total of 31 type 1 and 31 type 2 diabetic patients without macrovascular complications and 20 healthy volunteers were included. Serum OPG levels and ABI were measured. Presence of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) at elevated levels in the soils is threatening agricultural productivity. Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) enhance plant resistance to metal(loid)s by sequestering them into roots, thus restricting their translocation into leaves. The present study evaluated differential responses of AM-colonized Cajanus cajan and Pisum sativum plants to As and Cd uptake and oxidative metabolism under As and Cd stress (0, 30, and 60 mg kg-1). Arsenic uptake was significantly higher than Cd uptake, which caused greater growth inhibitions and induced oxidative stress. This study examined the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), humic acid (HA), and whey (W) application on wilt disease caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb. in tomato, pepper, and eggplant. Single, dual, and triple applications of AMF (2.5 g inocula of either Glomus mosseae or G. intraradices), HA (500 ppm), and W (50 mL kg-1) were found to improve the morphological growth and nutritional status of all three host species. Moreover, dual and triple applications reduced the severity of wilt disease caused by V. dahliae by between 40% and 70.5%. Triple application of AMF, HA, and W decreased the number …

Molybdenum cofactor sulfurases (MCSUs) are important enzymes for plant development and response to environmental queues, including processes such as nitrogen metabolism and regulation of the abscisic acid levels in plant tissues. We cloned and sequenced MCSU gene from barley and performed in silico comparison with rice, tomato, and Arabidopsis. Physico-chemical properties and subcellular predictions were found to be similar in different plant species. All MCSUs had three critical domains: aminotransferase class-V (Pfam: PF00266), MOSC N-terminal beta barrel (Pfam: PF03476), and MOSC (Pfam: PF03473). Waterlogging is a widespread problem and one of the major yield-limiting factors of wheat in some parts of the coastal plains of Turkey. The object of this study was to identify waterlogging-tolerant cultivars in bread wheat. Twenty-four bread-wheat genotypes were tested under aerobic and anaerobic conditions to determine shoot dry weight gain, root dry weight gain, total dry weight gain, dry leaf weight, specific dry leaf weight, chlorophyll content, carotenoid content, transpiration and photosynthesis rates, and their tolerance indices. Our previous research defined two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: high cadmium (Cd) accumulator YSL189 and low Cd accumulator HZ903. Further hydroponics experiments investigated the different tolerance mechanisms to Cd stress between YSL189 and HZ903 at the seedling stage. When Cd concentration was >20 µM in the growing medium, the uptake rate of Cd was significantly higher in roots of YSL189 than it was in roots of HZ903. When plants were supplied with 50 and 100 µM Cd in the growing medium, there were higher Cd concentration, higher biomass and plant height, shorter roots, and higher expression levels of transporter genes …

Physalis peruviana L. contains polyphenols and carotenoids with antiinflammatory and antioxidant activities used against diabetes. To establish an efficient regeneration system using nodal segments excised from 4-week-old germinated seedlings, direct plant regeneration, without additional rooting stage, was achieved on LS medium containing 0.5 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), kinetin (KIN), thidiazuron (TDZ), or gibberellic acid (GA3), alone or in combination with 0.25 mg/L indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), after 2 weeks of incubation. Sesamia nonagrioides (Lep.: Noctuidae) is one of the most serious pests of corn in Turkey and other Mediterranean countries. Although various cultural, chemical, and biological methods are used to control this pest, its damage still continues in all Mediterranean countries. In this study, to find an effective bacterium that can be used as a biocontrol agent against S. nonagrioides, we isolated 15 bacteria from S. nonagrioides larvae and evaluated the larvicidal potency of all isolates on the pest. Antioxidant enzymes play a protective role in plants under oxidative stress. The present study explores the role of antioxidant system heme oxygenase1 (HO1) in Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. in salt stress conditions. B. juncea seedlings were treated with different NaCl concentrations (0-200 mM) for 5 days. Salt stress elicited the highest response at 150 mM NaCl concentration; at this level, gene expression of HO1 was also upregulated. Apart from HO1, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), and glutathione reductase (GR) also showed their highest activity at 150 mM NaCl concentration. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in sperm plasma membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity, and extracellular environment during storage of boar semen at 5 °C, 16 °C, and 25 °C for 10 days. This study aimed to investigate the effects of frequently changing photoperiods and alpha-lipoic acid treatment on melatonin, cortisol, oxidative markers, and some blood parameters. Eighty-four rats were randomly and equally divided into 7 groups: a control group, 3 prolonged light groups, and 3 prolonged dark groups. The study was completed in 2 stages, with 1- and 4-week periods, respectively. A study of fungi on Amaranthus spp. was performed in 2007-2009. The following forms of the genus were taken under consideration: cultivated amaranth (A. cruentus) and a wild form (A. retroflexus) growing as a weed on amaranth and sugar beet plantations and growing as a ruderal weed. The influence of foliar application of silicon (Si) on chlorophyll contents, chlorophyll fluorescence, and growth of four wheat cultivars differing in drought tolerance (Sirvan and Chamran, as relatively drought tolerant, and Shiraz and Marvdasht, as drought sensitive) was examined under water deficit (100% and 40% F.C.) created in a greenhouse. The results showed that water deficit decreased shoot and root lengths, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, water utilization efficiency, chlorophyll a and b, and chlorophyll stability index. In the present study, to determine the effects of β-estradiol on the ability of plants to tolerate lead toxicity, β-estradiol (10 μM) and lead (1.75 mM), singly or in combination, were exogenously applied to wheat seeds. Although lead resulted in a marked increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase (but not catalase), as well as an increase in the level of antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and glutathione, this was insufficient to ameliorate the lead-induced oxidative injury or the superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde levels.
