Background/aim: We examined the protective effects of the natural flavonoid, quercetin, against cerebral vasospasm in an experimental rat subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) model. Materials and methods: Thirty-eight albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups as follows: group 1 (G1, n=8), no experimental intervention; group 2 (G2, n=8), subarachnoid physiological saline; group 3 (G3, n=8), SAH; group 4 (G4, n=7) SAH and low-dose (10 mg/kg) quercetin treatment; group 5 (G5, n=7), SAH and high-dose (50 mg/kg) quercetin treatment. Subarachnoid haemorrhage was induced by injection of 0.15 cc of autologous blood taken from the tail artery into the cisterna magna from the …

Background/aim: The treatment of posttraumatic deformities and differences in length between the extremities resulting from physeal injury remains controversial. The aims of this study were to compare the efficacy of tissue-engineered, monolayer, and allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell sheets and chondrocyte sheets for physeal arrest treatment and to investigate cell sheet technology as a novel method for cell transplantation in physeal cartilage repair. Materials and methods: A proximal tibial physeal injury was induced in New Zealand rabbits. Allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and chondrocytes were cultured in temperature-responsive culture dishes and applied to the iatrogenic partial growth plate defects in single-sheet …

Water determines the life quality of pigs, however, adequate measures need to be taken in order to reduce wastage while the animals are drinking. The current study hypothesized and examined a suitable position at which to fix the nipple drinker to provide sufficient drinking water to pigs while also limiting water wastage. Additionally, this study describes both the drinking pattern and drinking duration of pigs. The height to place the drinker was calculated based on the neck movement of the pigs (neck movement angle, NMA). According to the NMA, 3 independent treatments were investigated with angles placed at clockwise 30°, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Using alternative feedstuffs to replace corn and soybean in domestic poultry diets, as agroindustry by-products, may reduce production costs. Corn gluten meal is a by-product resulting of corn processing to obtain oil and starch. Aiming to evaluate the use of this ingredient in rooste's diet and its effects on sperm characteristics, 40 roosters with 68 to 72 weeks of age, randomly distributed in individual boxes, were tested. Two treatments were used: treatment 1 (control) - with corn and soybean meal, and treatment 2 - with 10% of corn gluten meal in the diet. Semen collection and body weight verification were …

Consumption of fermented milk products especially kefir is accelerated in the population due to their high nutritional value and other health benefits. These health benefits are rooted in the composition of source material and flora of kefir grains. Therefore, the utilization of different kinds of milk as source material in kefir production directly affects the properties of kefir. In this study, changes in the physicochemical properties, microbiological profiles, antibacterial effects, antioxidant activities, sensory evaluation, and total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of kefirs obtained from donkey milk (DM) and cow milk (CM) were compared. It was found that donkey milk …

Propolis collected from plants by honeybees is used for the construction and protection of hives. In addition, propolis has been used in the treatment of many diseases since ancient times because of its antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. Despite all these positive health effects, propolis can be microbiologically risky for many reasons such as environmental contamination and insufficient personnel hygiene. Therefore, chemical, physical, antimicrobial properties as well as microbiological properties are among the parameters to be investigated. This study aims to explore propolis?s initial bacteriological and parasitological flora using 5 different parameters (total coliform group, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, …
