Aim: To assess the efficiency of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on L. tropica, which is the major causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Turkey. Materials and methods: The effects of HBO on Leishmania tropica promastigote and amastigote forms were studied at a pressure of 2.5 atmosphere absolute (ata). We examined the cytotoxic effect of HBO on promastigotes using the trypan blue exclusion test and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) dye-reduction assay. To investigate the effects of HBO treatment on the growth of the promastigotes, HBO-treated and non-HBO-treated cell culture flasks were incubated at 26 °C for 3 days, while the effects …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Avian influenza (AI) is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Among these AI viruses, only serotypes H5 and H7 are considered highly pathogenic in poultry. However, serotype H9N2 has also been found to produce severe respiratory tract infections in chickens. Migratory birds of the world are a natural reservoir of influenza viruses of all subtypes. This is the first report of isolation and molecular survey of AI virus from migratory and wild resident birds in Boushehr, Iran. These areas are at risk for the spread and transmission of influenza A viruses. A …

3-Fluoro-4-(morpholin-4-yl)aniline (2), prepared from 3,4-difluoronitrobenzene, was converted to the corresponding Schiff base (3) by treatment with indol-3-carbaldehyde. The treatment of thiourea 4 and carbothioamide derivatives 9 with ethyl bromoacetate or 4-substituted phenacyl bromides generated the corresponding thiazolidinone (5 and 13) and thiazoline (6 and 12) derivatives, respectively. The acidic or basic treatment of carbothioamide 9 produced 1,3,4-thiadiazole (11) or 1,2,4-triazole (10) compounds, respectively. The structural assignments of the new compounds were based on elemental analysis and spectral (IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and LC-MS) data. The antimicrobial activity study revealed that all compounds showed good antitubercular activities.

In recent years, the incidence of fungal infections has been rising all over the world. Although the amount of research in the field of pathogenic fungi has also increased, there is still a need for studies on fungal virulence. In this investigation, we focused on testing bloodstream-identified Candida albicans in experimental in vitro virulence assays. The proteinase enzyme activities of 30 C. albicans strains isolated from the bloodstream and sterile body fluids were investigated (15 colonizations, 15 infections). The spectrophotometric and plate methods were used to determine proteinase activity. The correlations between the 2 methods were compared. This study indicates …

A protocol for production of virus-free Vitis vinifera using meristem culture was developed. Meristems (0.1-0.2 mm) of V. vinifera infected with grapevine fanleaf virus and grape leafroll associated viruses were excised from 1-year-old growing vines. Shoot tips were cultured on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with 0.02 mg L^{-1} of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.01 mg L^{-1} of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). BAP and kinetin resulted in differences in the number of new shoots per explant, shoot height, and number of new leaves per explant. BAP at 0.8 mg L^{-1} gave the highest in vitro multiplication rate, with 5.25 …

In a 500 head dairy sheep flock in Northern Greece, massive abortions (60%) were observed at 110-130 days of gestation. Attempts were made to treat the abortions with oxytetracyclin L.A. 20% but they were not successful. Toxoplasmosis was confirmed by laboratory examination of blood sera of ewes, aborted fetuses, and fetal brain samples. The remaining 200 pregnant sheep were divided in 2 groups of 100 ewes each. Animals of Group 1 were treated with 20 mg/kg b.w. sulfadimidine every other day 4 times, while the animals in Group 2 received 33 mg/kg b.w. sulfadimidine every other day 4 times via …
