Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Cancer has become an important public health challenge all around the world. Though the demographic and clinical features of cancer patients are well documented in Turkey, the establishment of social support networks has been somewhat neglected. The aim of the study was to assess cancer patients' perceived social support and quality of life characteristics. Materials and methods: The Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, and Turkish version of the EUROHIS measurements were obtained from the study group. Associations between the scores and sociodemographic variables of the patients were …

This study investigated the presence of strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised patients for the first time in Turkey. Materials and methods: Serum and stool samples were collected from 108 patients (25.9% of them were chronic renal failure and 74.1% were renal transplantation patients) who were admitted to Ege University Medical School in İzmir, located in western Turkey. Serum samples were analyzed by ELISA (DRG, Germany) and the presence of 18S rRNA gene of S. stercoralis was detected in stool samples by real-time …

Materials and methods: Relevant studies found from various databases with the help of previously specified search strategies were examined and eliminated according to eligibility criteria. The remaining 22 studies were included in this systematic review. Results: Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated species …

Background/aim: Actinomycosis is a granulomatous disease caused by filamentous, gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria. Actinomycetes are commensal inhabitants of the oral cavity and intestinal tract but acquire pathogenicity through invasion of breached or necrotic tissue. In abdominal actinomycosis (AA), the appendix and ileocecal region are usually involved. The aim of this study was to characterize patients diagnosed with AA and to establish the risk factors for appendiceal actinomycosis, including a short review of the literature. Materials and methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of all patients diagnosed with AA in the University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla (Santander-Cantabria) from January 2003 to …

Wheezing, Asthma, And Atopy In Premature Infants At 2 Years Of Age, Sevi̇m Ünal, Ayşenur Kaya, Leyla Bi̇lgi̇n, Emi̇ne Di̇bek Misirlioğlu, Can Naci̇ Kocabaş
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: We aimed to evaluate wheezing, bronchial asthma (BA), and atopy in premature infants at 2 years of age via a crosssectional study. Materials and methods: Premature infants at <37 weeks of gestational age (GA) were assessed for atopy by skin-prick test and serum immunoglobulin E level at 2 years of age. The family's and infant's histories of allergy, BA, atopy, and wheezing were obtained by questionnaire and from hospital records. Results: There were 98 infants, with mean birth weight (BW) 1517.4 ± 486.5 g and GA 30.8 ± 2.9 weeks. The frequencies of wheezing, asthma, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) were 32.7%, 16.3%, and 14.3%, respectively. Skin-prick tests were positive for 11 subjects, with allergy to cereals for 7 infants, egg for 3, and peanut for 1. Wheezing was related to GA, BW, respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, asphyxia, smoking, antenatal steroid, BA, palivizumab prophylaxis, number of people in the household, and duration of hospitalization (P < 0.05). Wheezing was negatively correlated to GA. Family history of BA, smoking, and number of people in the household were linked to BA (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Wheezing was related to degree of premature birth, but BA was linked to BA in the family and smoking. Increased gestation should improve the infant's respiratory health up to 2 years of age.

The Comparison Of Various Disinfectants? Efficacy On Staphylococcus Aureus And Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Layers, Hati̇ce Köse, Nur Yapar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Because biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and biocides, they usually cause chronic persistent infections, which are arduous to cure and have high mortality and morbidity. Our study aimed to investigate the efficiency of orthophthalaldehyde, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilm layers and live microbial cells. Materials and methods: Biofilm layers were determined by crystal violet assay and live microbial cells were determined using a resazurin assay. Background/aim: Intralesional recombinant epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a new treatment approach for diabetic foot ulcer, approved in 2006. EGF therapy is given as an adjunct to the standard treatment regimen of antibiotics, surgery, and hyperbaric oxygen. EGF accelerates the healing of diabetic foot ulcers and reduces healing time. This single-center study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of intralesional EGF therapy in patients with diabetic foot ulcers.Materials and methods: We present the data of the follow-up patients treated in our clinics. Fifteen patients with diabetic foot ulcers or infections, who had been followed up and treated in our clinics, …

The aim of the study was to determine the seroprevalence of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and isolation of the FMD virus (FMDV) in the milk of apparently healthy Asian buffaloes. A cross-sectional study was conducted in periurban dairy farms (n = 20) on ≥20 animals per farm in the suburbs of Islamabad, Pakistan. Sera samples (n = 200) were collected to monitor FMDV seroconversions. The analysis of serum samples using ELISA indicated a high seroprevalence of FMD (78%; 156/200) in Asian buffaloes. Milk samples were collected from FMDV seropositive animals only, and virus-specific signals were detected in 12.2% (19/156) of the …

Background/aim: The present study aimed to assess the VAP rate and to identify VAP prevention activities in public sector hospitals situated in the Makkah Region, Saudi Arabia (SA). Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, the VAP data from 13 public sector hospitals were collected from January to December 2013 and analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: The overall VAP rate in Makkah Region hospitals was 6.89 cases per 1000 ventilator-days. There was a significant difference in VAP rate among the hospitals of the Makkah Region (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the VAP rate among hospitals, which were using only one, two, or all three VAP preventive approaches (P = 0.26) accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and Central Board for Accreditation of Health Care Institution (CBAHI) (P = 0.12), and using the form in intensive care units (ICUs) (P = 0.85). There was a significant difference in the VAP rate among hospitals having different bed capacities (P < 0.001), data regularly collected (P = 0.03), and had a team to supervise the VAP project (P = 0.04). Conclusion: The VAP rate in Makkah Region hospitals is 6.89 cases per 1000 ventilator-days.
