Oral And Dental Disorders In Pet Hedgehogs, Tzvetan Chaprazov, Rosen Dimitrov, Kamelia Stamatova Yovcheva, Krassimira Uzunova

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Hedgehogs are increasingly popular pets. As more people come to keep these unique creatures as pets, it is important to know how to properly take care of them, including how to provide the dental care they need. Hedgehogs are omnivorous with very well-developed jaws and short and relatively coarse teeth with a primitive structure. The skull is low with well-developed zygomatic arches. The incisors are sharp, modified forceps that are needed for elevation of small prey. The canines are small and often look like incisors or premolars. The molars and premolars are flat and wide. The teeth have closed root …

Evaluating The Effects Of Chitosan, Plant Oils, And Different Diets On Rumen Metabolism And Protozoan Population In Sheep, Monika Wencelova, Zora Varadyova, Katarina Mihalikova, Svetlana Kisidayova, Dusan Jalc

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Chitosan (CH) has been shown to be a promising natural antimicrobial agent. This study examined the effects on rumen metabolism when providing diets containing high forage (HFD), low forage (LFD), and maize silage (MSD) to a 24-h batch culture in which the diets were not supplemented (control) or were supplemented with CH (100 mg/L), sunflower oil (SF, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), rapeseed oil (RP, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), or SF and RF with chitosan combinations (SFCH and RPCH). Dry matter digestibility in the batch culture was influenced by CH and was decreased in HFD compared with the control (P < 0.01). Decreasing total number of protozoa and the number of Entodinium spp. was evident, especially in LFD and MSD, with all additives. RPCH had a predominantly adverse effect on Dasytricha ruminantium in MSD. Interactions of the diets × additives in the majority of rumen ciliate populations were detected. The concentrations of trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid (c9, t11-CLA) were unchanged by chitosan. However, the combination of SF and RF with chitosan (SFCH and RPCH) positively affected fatty acid profiles, which might be related to differences in diets, SF or RP composition, and different microbial activity in the batch cultures.

Risk Factors For Postpartum Anestrus In Crossbred Cows In Bangladesh, Md Mostofa Kamal, Md Musharraf Uddin Bhuiyan, Nasreen Parveen, Harry W. Momont, Mohammed Shamsuddin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ultrasonography and a structured questionnaire were used in a cross-sectional study to gather data on the prevalence and risk factors for anestrus in crossbred cows at =>60 days postpartum in 273 smallholder farms. The prevalence of anestrus was 18%. The odds ratio (OR) for true anestrus was 17.52 and 2.81 times higher (P < 0.05) in cows with poor (=3.5) body condition score (BCS), respectively, compared to those with optimal BCS (2.5-3.5), 2.82 times higher in suckled than in nonsuckled cows (P = 0.03), and 2.53 times higher in cows that calved during the cold season than in those that calved during the hot season (P = 0.03). The OR for anestrus was 1.62 times higher (P = 0.017) in cows managed by an employee than in those managed by the farmers themselves (P = 0.001), and 2.66 times higher (P = 0.003) in small farms (=11 cows). The OR was 0.71 to 0.46 times lower in farms having a guaranteed market to sell milk than those with an uncertain traditional milk market (P < 0.05). Maintaining optimal BCS of cows, farmers' training on management of cattle reproduction, and development of a market linkage to sell milk would improve the number of cows for breeding by 60 days postpartum.

Folate And Homocysteine Metabolisms And Their Roles In The Biochemical Basis Of Neuropsychiatry, Alpaslan Coşar, Osman Meti̇n İpci̇oğlu, Ömer Özcan, Mustafa Gültepe

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The term 'one-carbon metabolism' is commonly used to describe 3 separate metabolic processes: folate metabolism, the homocysteine remethylation cycle, and the transsulfuration pathway. Folate metabolism concerns the biochemical reactions in which endogenous and exogenous one-carbon units are transferred to tetrahydrofolates. The remethylation cycle is used for the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine with one-carbon units that come from folate. This methionine is then used for the synthesis of S-adenosyl methionine, which is a general donor of methyl groups for many biochemical reactions in the human body. In the transsulfuration pathway, some amino acids and polypeptides, such as cystathionine, cysteine, and …

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) generally affects many organs. In this study a retrospective evaluation of the pulmonary findings of CCHF patients was made. Materials and methods: The records of patients were retrospectively analysed. For each patient an evaluation was made of age, sex, occupation, place of residence, contact with ticks, smoking history, and pulmonary radiological and laboratory findings. A confirmed diagnosis of CCHF was made on determination by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or polymerase chain reaction. Results: Of the 128 patients, 48.4% were female. Symptoms of coughing were determined in 18% of patients, sputum in 4.7%, chest pain in 3.9%, dyspnoea …

This paper reports the toxic properties of nano-TiO_2 on 2 different early life stages of Xenopus laevis. Synthesis of nano-TiO_2 particles was carried out by the hydrothermal method. Characterization of nanoparticles was performed using spectral techniques including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and a particle-size analyzer. Embryos at the 8th stage and tadpoles at the 46th stage were exposed to 7 concentrations of nano-TiO_2 in the range of 5 to 320 ppm. After 96 h of exposure, the mortality percentage of each exposure concentration was calculated and the activity of enzyme biomarkers acetylcholinesterase, carboxylesterase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, lactate dehydrogenase, …

Growth-regulating factor (GRF) genes may play important roles for regulating growth and development in different plant tissues and organs. Here we report the first genome-wide analysis of the GRF gene family in Brachypodium. We performed in silico comparative analysis of GRF genes, including their structure, duplication in the genome, conserved motifs, and phylogenetic relationship. At the end of the study, 10 BdGRF genes were identified. The highest number of GRF genes was identified on chromosome 1 with 5 members, whereas the least number of genes (only 1 member) was found on chromosomes 2, 4, and 5. Of those, a single …
