Background/aim: TheY-chromosome mainly consists of heterochromatin regions that have a father-to-son inheritance. Short tandem repeat polymorphic (STRP) markers distributed all over the chromosome provide the opportunity for investigations in forensic medicine and ancestral lineage studies. Due to the existence of wide varieties of geographical and ethnic groups in Iran, studying Y-STRP markers is necessary for further applications. Here we investigated the provinces of Mazandaran and Gilan for the first time. Materials and methods: Samples included 119 and 90 unrelated males from Mazandaran and Gilan, respectively. Background/aim: Thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) protein is one of the most promising molecules among candidates for vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis. It was found to be significantly protective against different Leishmania species. In this study, cloning and molecular characterization of thiol-specific antioxidant gene of L. tropica Turkey isolate (LtTSA) were aimed. Materials and methods: LtTSA was amplified by PCR using the specific primers of TSA gene and cloned into the pcDNA3.1 vector. Background/aim: Defective vascularization may be important in thyroid nodular disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in dyslipidemic patients with thyroid nodules, as well as the effects of statin therapy.Materials and methods: The study included 37 dyslipidemic patients with thyroid nodules and 32 dyslipidemic patients without thyroid nodules. Anthropometry, serum VEGF levels, biochemical parameters, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels, and thyroid sonography were determined before and after 6 months of statin therapy. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study having evaluated the immunohistochemical features of FNIPs. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) in the feces of healthy poultry and retail chicken. All 146 E. coli recovered from 351 samples were screened by PCR for detection of ExPEC strains. Nineteen (13.01%) isolates were confirmed as ExPEC. Distribution of ExPEC strains was revealed as follows: broiler (25%), layer (15.87%), and raw chicken (3.12%). Turkey, duck, and water samples were negative for ExPEC strains. ExPEC strains belonged to phylogenetic groups B2 (52.63%), A (36.84%), and D (10.53%). Twenty-three (15.75%) isolates were ESBL-positive, including four ExPEC strains. ESBL-positive …

This study was conducted to detect polymorphisms of BPI gene exon 10 by PCR-RFLP in Meishan pigs and their associations with some important cytokine levels (IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TGF-1ß, IFN-γ, TNF-α) and reproductive traits (total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), birth litter weight (BLW), and weaning litter weight (WLW)), with the aim of identifying effective genetic markers for molecular breeding. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of reuse of progesterone-releasing intravaginal devices (PRIVDs) on serum progesterone, estrogen levels, and ovulatory follicle diameter in pubertal heifers. Three pubertal Holstein heifers were used in the study for three different periods with the usage of three PRIVDs up to three times from day 0 to 7 according to the Latin square model. In this study, findings of morphological deformation observed on a blue crab sampled in Köyceğiz Lagoon (Muğla, Turkey) are presented. The deformation is in the left lateral spine. It has been observed that this spine, which normally should have been one, developed as two independent spines. Due to this abnormality observed in the individual, the individual has two carapace widths.

The patient in this case report was a male Golden Retriever dog, approximately 5 years of age, found in woodlands and presenting with an inability to use the right hindlimb. In craniocaudal and mediolateral radiographs taken of the patient, presence of an old comminuted fracture caused by a firearm injury was observed in the right femoral condyle. A custom-made trochlear groove of suitable dimensions for the patient was produced. The patient tip-toed on postoperative day 1 and was seen to be mostly weight-bearing by day 7. A small pupil and poor pupil dilation are well-known risk factors faced by veterinary ophthalmologists during and after cataract surgery. We here describe two cases of phacoemulsification performed using an iris expander (Visitec I-Ring Pupil Expander, Beaver-Visitec International, USA) for treating cataracts in dogs with small pupils. Using this technique, we performed cataract extraction effectively in dogs with insufficiently dilated pupils. This case report provides useful information on the use of an iris expander for phacoemulsification in eyes with a small pupil, which can be applied in veterinary settings.

In this report, we provide clinical information on the diagnosis of postretinal blindness in veterinary ophthalmology. We have diagnosed three dogs with postretinal blindness (bilateral in one case and in the left eye in two cases). The electroretinogram results were normal and the optic axis was relatively clear in all cases. Our findings indicate that the reason for the blindness in these dogs was an intracranial lesion. The aim herein was to evaluate the effects of the induction of parturition using repeated low doses of dexamethasone in cattle. A total of 28 Simmental cows were used for the induction of parturition (n = 20) or served as controls (n = 8). A new attempt was undertaken to check the reproductive capabilities of male hybrids bred from European bison (Bison bonasus) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus). The analysis concerned two hybrids aged 1.5?2.5 years (the latter being sampled twice at 6-month intervals), and additionally one 1.5-year-old backcross hybrid. Examination of testicular tissue revealed halting of spermatogenesis, which was hardly ever able to proceed further than meiosis I. Spermatogenesis was arrested at the stage of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. Spermatozoa were found only in the case of one hybrid and these were mostly malformed.
