This Article examines the Second Amendment rights of young adults, ages 18 to 20. It begins with what the Supreme Court has said about the Second Amendment rights of such persons. Parts II and III survey colonial and founding-era sources. These show that the typical age for mandatory militia duty was 16 or 18 years of age. Many other people, who were not in the active militia, were also required to keep arms at home. Recent scandals involving high-level Chinese military officers have energized to reform the Chinese military justice system. These efforts have resulted in some of the most significant structure changes to China’s military legal system since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This article reviews the legal authorities underpinning China’s military justice system, compares the military justice systems of the U.S. and China, and assess China’s current reform efforts. It also discusses the impact of corruption on Chine military readiness, military-to-military relations, and international relations. “Assault Weapon” Myths, E. Gregory Wallace

Four federal circuit courts have rejected Second Amendment challenges to “assault weapon” bans. The main target of these bans is the civilian AR-15, the most popular rifle in America. Most recently, the en banc Fourth Circuit in Kolbe v. Hogan took the unprecedented step of declaring that the AR-15 is not a protected firearm under the Second Amendment because it is functionally equivalent to the military M16. These courts have based their decisions upholding bans on the AR-15 and other “assault weapons” on certain factual claims about how these firearms operate.

This dissertation presents the results of a comparison of human skeletons from two historic villages (the Larson site, 39WW2, and the Leavenworth site, 39CO9), which were inhabited by Great Plains Village Horticulturalists following the arrival of Europeans and Americans. The people living at these villages are suspected to have experienced changes to their cultural practices, with Larson occupied during the beginning of the Post-Contact period and Leavenworth occupied just before the complete abandonment of the Plains Village lifeway. Prescribed fire has become a management tool utilized to restore or maintain the ecology of the mixed hardwoods ecosystem in the Ozark hills of southwestern Illinois. One effect of prescribed burning is consumption of fuel beds, including the litter layer that protects soil from erosion. Amount of sediment loss after prescribed burning in the steep topography of the Ozark hills is unknown. Erosion after prescribed burning could lead to increased soil loss and possibly stream sedimentation (Bladon etal., 2014). This dissertation examines the establishment of United States Information Centers in West Germany immediately after the Second World War, and their role in securing the support of West German elites for American occupation policies, particularly democratic self-government. Located at the intersection of culture, economics, and American politics, the America Houses (Amerikahäuser) educated curious Germans about the United States, presenting a carefully curated vision of American life that minimized conflict and highlighted the material and cultural prosperity enjoyed by the mythical “average American.” The Americans contended that with the adoption of democracy and a reformed market economy, affluence was something West …

The most potent weapon America possesses in the battle against terrorism is information.  Information provides the government the ability to determine terrorist intentions, identify terror actors, assess target vulnerabilities, and implement countermeasures.  Information drives the government’s decision cycle. The greater the depth and breadth of information at the government’s disposal, the greater the range of options are available to the government.

Abolitionism And The Logic Of Martyrdom: Death As An Argument For John Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe, And Frederick Douglass, Maximilian Umberto Martini

This paper looks at three significant instances of the representation of abolitionist martyrdom in nineteenth-century America to first sketch the abolitionist discourse and its varied conceptualizations of martyrdom and second question the rationale and success of this strategy for manumitting slaves. Accordingly, I start with Brown, who (with help from sympathetic northerners and the megaphone of the Associated Press) appealed to the martyrological tradition in order to transform his paramilitary failure at Harper’s Ferry into a powerful symbol of his own abolitionist righteousness over and against the state’s iniquity. Fifteen years ago, Michael Bellesiles’s Arming America was the darling of antigun intellectuals because it created an entirely new perception of the American relationship to guns.  It implicitly argued for a much narrower reading of the Second Amendment that was compliant with an America (then) that hated guns and did not own them.  Questions were soon raised about the accuracy of the statistics in Bellesiles’s articles and book, his honesty about where he researched documents, his widespread alteration of quotes, and his citations to documents that directly refuted his claims.  He rapidly went from tenured professor of history at Emory …

This document provides in-depth research on the voice recital of Jeremy Simmons. This document will discuss Vincenzo Bellini’s Sei Arietta, Gabriel Fauré’s Poèmed’un jour, W. A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the aria “Il mio tesoro.” Also discussed in detail will be the first seven Lieder of Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe and four selections of Hall Johnson’s arrangements of Negro spirituals. Each chapter will discuss the origins of each work, the composer or arranger’s background, musical analysis of each piece, and translations.

Here, I bring communication theories into conversation with peace and conflict scholarship. Specifically, I explore how the ways in which women narrate their experiences of violent conflict through sewing collectives can inform conflict transformation work. I engage in this exploration within the framework of narrative theory, using Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad to analyze the narratives presented in a selection of textile pieces created by women in Chile, South Africa, and Northern Ireland. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) led a multi-state, collaborative natural lawn care outreach program promoting sustainable lawn care practices at the community and household level. The programmatic goal was to improve Lake Michigan basin ecosystem health by reducing pesticide, synthetic fertilizer, and irrigation water use and runoff within the watershed through changing the practices of those responsible for the creation and upkeep of lawns. Targeted audiences were educated about the relationship between Great Lakes Basin watershed health and lawn care practices as well as trained in natural, low-input lawn care methods. The military relies heavily on advertising. National defense is itself a product that is marketed to the American taxpayer who not only funds the Pentagon but fights its battles. Recruiting is crucial to maintaining the all-volunteer force created in 1973 when the draft was abolished. While plenty of individuals readily sign up others need more encouragement. By examining various accounts, including state agents, local peoples, and missionaries, this paper highlights the colony’s oppressive conditions and the significant responses it provoked.

Home Economics Programs Within Higher Education: A Typology, Sara Holtzman

Home economics programs through the 1920s served varied purposes within higher education. This typology addresses three types of home economics programs - teaching, extension, and academia- through the lens of characteristics, curricula, and examples. Reviewing historical events that lead into the differentiation of home economics programs throughout the United States offers unique insights into the reasons for the development of each type. This typology offers a different point of view in considering what home economics programs entailed, and defines the field as an intentional and academic program of study for the women of higher education.

The Concern Over Qualified Creative Genius: A Look Into Eighteenth-Century Poetic Fancy, Alexandra D. Rude

Using the non-fictional works of eighteenth-century authors like Dugald Stewart, James Beattie, and William Wordsworth in conjunction with the poetry of Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe, among others, the eighteenth-century poetic “Fancy” develops as a representation of the period’s concern over genius and the imaginative mind. Fancy emerges as an entity which overcomes any gendered consideration, and acts as a powerful vessel in which contemplation on understanding and creativity can be identified.
