Networks For Representation: Social Capital And The Efficacy Of Local Participatory Institutions, Christopher Weare, Juliet A. Musso
Networks For Representation: Social Capital And The Efficacy Of Local Participatory Institutions, Christopher Weare, Juliet A. Musso
2010
Efforts to understand the successes and limitations of civil society institutions have inspired a growing literature on social networks, social capital, and the role that social relationships play in developing group norms supporting collective action and in linking groups to network-based resources. The literature has tended to emphasize broad egocentric networks or informal networks of community organizations, largely ignoring the importance of social capital for supporting engagement of the formal participatory institutions that are arising as a way of improving stakeholder input in many cities. The extant research on community-representing organizations has tended to conceptualize social networks in largely metaphorical …
Changes In Spatial Segregation: Influence On The Social Networks Of Urban Poor In A Brazilian City, Maira Rodrigues
Changes In Spatial Segregation: Influence On The Social Networks Of Urban Poor In A Brazilian City, Maira Rodrigues
2010
The main concern of this dissertation is to explore the way that a change in the spatial segregation can influence the social networks of inhabitants in a popular district in the city of Campinas. The empiric reference is Vila Castelo Branco, a district built by Cohab – Campinas in 1967 for the low-income population. This case illustrates a process of incorporation of a spatially segregated district and the research developed was the study of the transformation that this spatial change caused to the social network of the people living there. Such proposal is inserted in the debate on the inequality …
An Exploration Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Machiavellianism In Future Health Care Professionals, Sandra K. Collins
An Exploration Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Machiavellianism In Future Health Care Professionals, Sandra K. Collins
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) orientations of future healthcare professionals and their relative viewpoint of CSR in terms of Socioeconomic or Classical. The study also sought to determine the nature and the strength of relationships between CSR orientations and Machiavellian tendencies. To conduct the study, 162 future health care professionals enrolled in varying healthcare- related programs at an accredited university were surveyed. Findings from the study indicated a linear relationship between an individual's CSR orientation, CSR viewpoint, and innate Machiavellian levels. The higher an individual's Machiavellian score, the more likely he or …
Shadowing Practices: Ethnographic Accounts Of Private Eyes As Entrepreneurs, Craig L. Engstrom
Shadowing Practices: Ethnographic Accounts Of Private Eyes As Entrepreneurs, Craig L. Engstrom
Dissertations
In recent years, entrepreneurship studies scholars have begun studying entrepreneurship from a process-oriented philosophy and with an interest in the prosaic, everyday practices of entrepreneurs. In keeping with these "new movement" approaches, I have tried to "catch" entrepreneurship as it is happening within the field of private investigations. An in-depth, two-year field study of private investigators engaged in the entwined practices of investigating and entrepreneuring was conducted. Methodologically, I shadowed five private investigators and interviewed an additional 25. Because shadowing is an emergent methodology, an in-depth discussion of conducting and writing shadowing research is provided. As noted in this discussion, …

Centrality In Politics: How Networks Confer Power, Emilie M. Hafner-Burton, Alexander H. Montgomery
Centrality In Politics: How Networks Confer Power, Emilie M. Hafner-Burton, Alexander H. Montgomery
2010
A traditional view of power in politics is that it comes from the possession of important resources. The relative possession of resources is thought to provide actors such as people, organizations, and states with means of coercion or influence over others. This traditional view is highly limiting, since power also comes from ties (patterns of association) that link together actors in networks. These ties, whether material (like trade flows) or social (like friendship), determine an actor’s ability to have access to, make connections between, or quickly spread resources to, other actors. An actor’s relative position in a network formed by …

Communicating With Constituents In 140 Characters Or Less:, Christine B. Williams, Girish J. Gulati
Working Papers
This paper affords an opportunity to study the early adoption, implementation and performance of an emerging technology by analyzing which members of Congress have been early adopters and extensive users of Twitter, and which have attracted the most followers. Our research questions and measures draw from the diffusion of innovation literature and early studies of online politics. Three multivariate analyses reveal that two motivators of adoption, party (Republican) and campaign resources are also drivers leading to extensive usage, but the other two, an urban constituency and the member’s own age do not. Instead, a large vote share in the last …

The Political Consequences Of Gender In Social Networks, Paul Djupe, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey
The Political Consequences Of Gender In Social Networks, Paul Djupe, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey
Working Papers
Prior research on communication in social networks demonstrates its influence on a variety of democratic behaviors including opinion formation, tolerance, voting behavior, and participation. Largely unexplored in this literature is the potential for unexplored heterogeneity in social influence, particularly across gender lines. In this paper, we move the discussion forward by examining how classic results in the field of social communication, which often did not even control for gender, yield different results when we consider gender dynamics. Women’s networks are constructed differently than men’s, but women also use their networks differently and process information from them differently than men do. …
Political Belief Networks. Socio-Cognitive Heterogeneity In American Public Opinion, Delia Baldassarri, Amir Goldberg
Political Belief Networks. Socio-Cognitive Heterogeneity In American Public Opinion, Delia Baldassarri, Amir Goldberg
2010
Most research in public opinion and political sophistication relies on the assumption that Americans organize their political belief system according to the liberal and conservative categories. Yet not all of them do. We hypothesize that citizens’ sociodemographic profiles make them disposed to espouse different understandings of the political debate, and document systematic heterogeneity in Americans’ organization of their political attitudes over the last two decades. We interpret this diversity as the coexistence of multiple belief systems.
Relational class analysis (RCA), a network-based method for detecting heterogene- ity in collective patterns of opinion, is used to identify distinctive opinion structures – …
