Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Research Papers
This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
The last act of "A Privileged Past" is devoted to the author’s life and work in higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its ecological niche on the northern-most edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The faculty member’s teaching, research, and service are described and set within the context of an evolving academic community and its relationship to a larger environment. Given the limitations of empirical knowledge, the chapter’s chief metaphor is a sixth sense of what is right and of use to others, students especially, who are intent upon a better life for themselves.
A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram
A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram
Publications
Drawing on a pragmatic approach, this paper provides an analysis of governmental support for organic farming in Ireland. There are varying levels of encouragement and programmes provided to farmers in their conversion from conventional to organic production, and in their maintenance of organic production. Support policies vary across regions and are linked to European Union legislation, thus it is challenging to document the many types of support in place. This research investigates relevant technical, financial, and policy support available to organic farmers in Ireland. This exploratory study develops an assessment of Ireland within eight key categories of organic agricultural support: …

The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran
The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran
Working Papers
The term “security” has many more dimensions in the post-9/11 world than it had during the Cold War. Threats may come from different sources, at different speeds, and have different targets. All the actors involved in the provision of security from a specific type of threat create a network—not just states or states in intergovernmental organizations, but all the actors in the “ecosystem." If we look at the relationships among these actors using network analysis, we should be able to map the structure of the entire network. Contrary to the assumptions in most International Relations literature, networks can be centralized …

Hydrophilanthropy, Wash, And Experiential Learning In Developing Countries, Michael E. Campana
Hydrophilanthropy, Wash, And Experiential Learning In Developing Countries, Michael E. Campana
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Two different and unrelated programs are described, one undergraduate and one graduate, that: 1) introduced students to water research and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) issues in developing countries; 2) injected developing countries' WASH issues into a university graduate water resources program; and 3) introduced hydrophilanthropy, defined as the altruistic concern for the water, sanitation, and related needs of humankind, as manifested by donations of labor, money, or resources. From 2002 through 2004, a National Science Foundation summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program hosted by University of Notre Dame with University of Nevada-Reno and University of New Mexico took undergraduates …

Adult Learners And The Dialectical Process: A Validating Constructivist Approach To Learning Tranfer And Application, Christopher A. Chaves
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This article will address the theoretical, conceptual, and the consequent application strategies involved in operationalizing dialectical curricular designs appropriate for adult learners. In particular, the concepts of constructivism, andragogy, experiential learning, and transformational learning will serve as the foundational philosophical and theoretical concepts that can inform and complement a dialectical learning framework. The article will assert that dialectical discourse methods can serve as validating mechanisms for the exchange of ideas and concepts, to use and affirm students’ personal and professional experiences, to create a community of learners, and to fulfill the need of continual change in adult learners’ knowledge, skills, …

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The impact of skin tone bias among African Americans in the workplace was examined utilizing grounded theory. The data revealed the harmful personal and workplace effects of the phenomenon. Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Career and technical education (CTE) has remained a dynamic entity in the world of education since its inception. The changes in the 1990s have made significant advancements in the image and validity of career and technical education programs. These programs have become an important factor of economy and social growth worldwide. The success of students begins with how they are educated and the quality and training of their teachers. Improving teacher quality will be important if CTE is expected to alter its mission. The availability, experience, priorities, and selected practices of teachers can be expected to affect quality of instruction. …

Does Generation Status Matter? An Examination Of Latino College Completers, Cecilia Maldonado
Does Generation Status Matter? An Examination Of Latino College Completers, Cecilia Maldonado
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Attendance and graduation rates of Latinos in institutions of higher education in the United States are improving. Educational attainment is critical to upward mobility in the labor market (Kao & Thompson, 2003; Erlach, 2000; Morales, 2000). College completion rates and earning a degree are significant predictors of earning potential and occupational choice (Morales, 2000). The Latino population is growing faster than any other group and has the highest (35.5%) proportion of people younger than age 18 (NCLR, 2001; U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; Schmidt, 2003). This paper reports the results of a descriptive and inferential study, which examined Latino college completers …

The Evolution And Implications Of Entrepreneurship Curriculum At Universities, Kyle L. Harfst
The Evolution And Implications Of Entrepreneurship Curriculum At Universities, Kyle L. Harfst
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The notion of entrepreneurship is not a new one. Neither is the idea of entrepreneurship education. However, post-secondary entrepreneurship curriculum has exploded the past thirty five years. A number of reasons have helped to fuel this growth. An argument can be made that entrepreneurs can be made and are not born. Entrepreneurship education is the tool that encourages the transformation process. At the university level, most entrepreneurship curriculum is taught in business schools and colleges. Implications indicate that entrepreneurship education is good not only for students who become entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship curriculum stimulates creativity and ownership, two traits desired by corporate …
