Anything You Can Do?: The Influence Of Role Models On Architecture Students’ Future Career Confidence, Sarah L. Lawrence
Anything You Can Do?: The Influence Of Role Models On Architecture Students’ Future Career Confidence, Sarah L. Lawrence
Research Papers
Since its professionalization in 1857, the field of architecture has been male dominated. Traditionally, the efforts of female architects have been constrained to sectors considered “appropriate” to their gender such as historic preservation and residential and interior design (Adams and Tancred 2000, American Architectural Foundation 1988). Efforts to promote gender equality more broadly have improved academic participation and, in 2012, women accounted for 42% of architecture students nationally (The National Architectural Accrediting Board, Inc. 2012). However, during the same year, women made up only 24% of the architecture workforce (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012). Scholars and professionals attribute this gender …

Promotional Strategies Of Local Nonprofit Organizations, Katherine E. Foley
Research Papers
This study is about the promotional efforts of nonprofit agencies in the Southern Illinois region. Nonprofits have to cater to three target audiences which are clientele, donors and volunteers. An in depth interview was conducted with key personnel at six different rural non-profit organizations about their marketing strategies and how they allocate funding for promotion. Based on the results, most effective form of promotion proved to be grassroots efforts and the most popular source of capital came from government funding. This study concludes that agencies should use their promotional efforts to attract volunteers and donors. The study recommends that in …

Preparing Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorders For Employment, Princess M. Cullum, Demetria Ennis-Cole
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The work experiences and job histories of adults with ASD were examined to determine whether or not they corroborate findings in the literature. Incidences of ASD are on the rise, and children diagnosed with ASD will become adults who will need employment opportunities. Most employers are using a variety of technology tools to increase productivity, communicate, perform record-keeping tasks, save time and money, and conduct business. Individuals with ASD gravitate toward technology, and employment opportunities that capitalize on the use
technology may allow them to be productive in the
workplace. Semi-structured interviews using
open-ended questions reviewed and approved by

Political Engagement And Political Efficacy Through Social ‘Friendships’ On Facebook – Impact Of Presidential Campaigns Through Social Networking Sites In Taiwan, Yun-Sen Chan
Research Papers
Online citizenship (Scheufele & Nisbet, 2002) and online behavior is being debated as new technologies and Social Networking Sites (SNS) are altering and enhancing traditional political campaign practices. Across the world, technologically driven campaigns are being used aggressively for increasing political socialization of voters, encouraging online blogs, online political support groups, political efficacy, political engagement and voting behavior (Bentivegna, 2006; Bimber & Davis, 2003; Chang, 2003; Chadwick, 2009; Davis, 1999; Karan, Gimeno & Tandoc, 2009; Willnat, 2009; Yamamoto, 2006).
New democracies (First election in 1996) like Taiwan’s have already jumped the bandwagon. The country’s political campaigns are not only following …
The Concern Over Qualified Creative Genius: A Look Into Eighteenth-Century Poetic Fancy, Alexandra D. Rude
The Concern Over Qualified Creative Genius: A Look Into Eighteenth-Century Poetic Fancy, Alexandra D. Rude
Research Papers
Using the non-fictional works of eighteenth-century authors like Dugald Stewart, James Beattie, and William Wordsworth in conjunction with the poetry of Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe, among others, the eighteenth-century poetic “Fancy” develops as a representation of the period’s concern over genius and the imaginative mind. Fancy emerges as an entity which overcomes any gendered consideration, and acts as a powerful vessel in which contemplation on understanding and creativity can be identified.

Questions And A Few Answers In Performing Luciano Berio’S Sequenza 1, Douglas E. Worthen
Questions And A Few Answers In Performing Luciano Berio’S Sequenza 1, Douglas E. Worthen
Faculty Charts
Berio's Iconic Sequenza 1 was first published first in 1958, and later in metric notation in 1992. An accurate reading of the composition seems to require a conflation of the two versions, because the newer version leaves out important metric and organizational detail. Performers have understandably mixed feelings about the newer edition, as it removes a certain interpretive freedom that the spatially noted version provides. This article attempts to present the challenges, and offer some solutions for performance.

An Analysis Of Father Involvement Practices In Early Childhood: Implications For Early Intervention Service Delivery, Katherine A. Peterson
Research Papers
While research has shown the important role fathers play in young children’s lives, fathers are often not involved in Early Intervention services. This literature review will examine father involvement in early childhood programs in the United States, father involvement in early childhood programs in other countries, and staff perceptions of father involvement in early childhood programs. Findings include fathers preferred attending activities for all family members, and designed to support children’s growth and development. Fathers were not as likely to participate in men-only activities. Barriers to father involvement such as scheduling, lack of energy and resources, and child’s mother prefers …

No At-Risk Law Student Left Behind: The Convergence Of Academic Support Pedagogy And Experiential Education, Starla J. Williams, Iva J. Ferrell
No At-Risk Law Student Left Behind: The Convergence Of Academic Support Pedagogy And Experiential Education, Starla J. Williams, Iva J. Ferrell
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This Article addresses the urgent need to develop innovative experiential education that takes into account the unique learning needs of both at-risk and underperforming law students. The authors discuss the anticipated surge of these academically vulnerable law students who are unable to benefit from clinics or externships that law schools offer to higher achieving students. The authors observe that as the economic downturn in the United States continues to take its toll on law school applications, law schools will admit candidates with lower performance indicators who require more practice-based legal skills training to succeed. This influx of academically and professionally …

Ignoring The First Amendment: Criminalizing Legally Consensual Sexual Photographs In People V. Hollins, 2012 Il 112754, 971 N.E.2d 504, Ariana E. Calderaro
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The Illinois Supreme Court decision in People v. Hollins upheld the conviction of a defendant under the Illinois child pornography statute for taking photographs of himself and his seventeen-year-old girlfriend having sexual relations, while another Illinois statute legalizes consensual sex with any person seventeen or older. This is due to the fact that Illinois considers child pornography as its own distinct historical category of unprotected speech, as recognized by the Supreme Court in United States v. Ferber. However, after the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Stevens, child pornography is arguably not its own distinct historical category, …

Developing T-Shaped Water Professionals: Building Capacity In Collaboration, Learning, And Leadership To Drive Innovation, Brian S. Mcintosh, Andre Taylor
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
As we progress into the 21 st century, change is an increasingly central theme for water professionals and for professionals in sectors where water plays a central role. Building the capacity of professionals in water and closely related sectors to lead such change will be an essential component of the response to global water challenges this century. This paper provides a contribution by critically developing a concept, the T-shaped water professional, as a framework for the design of curricula for educational programs to build the capacity of water professionals to stimulate and drive processes of innovation and change. The T-shaped …

Popular Education For Water Sustainability: Three Lessons From Reflective Practice, Peter Oliver, William C. Dennison
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Between them, the authors of this paper have over sixty years experience in water education working in primary and secondary schools, universities, field study centres, professional development programs; and with community, industry, and government groups, focusing on coastal zones and catchments. Over the last three years, they have undertaken a systematic process of personal and dialogic reflection and deliberation on this experience, particularly in the area of popular education. This paper presents three key water education lessons gained from this iterative process and provides examples to justify the sagacity of this choice. First and foremost, popular water educators really need …
