Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton
Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton
Research Papers
Comic books are a popular form of creative storytelling. Through sequential juxtaposed panels, comics have the unique ability to interact with the reader through time and space. The context within comics is the constrained amount of panels a typical comic book page allows, and the space that exists between the panels encourages the reader to manipulate meaning. Through this unique process of interaction between the narrative and the reader, comics have proven to be a creative medium to promote meanings of social change. Throughout history, comics have utilized their entertaining guise to mask underlying themes of social injustices and political …

Animal-Assisted Therapy: Benefits And Implications For Professionals In The Field Of Rehabilitation, Amanda M. Mangalavite
Research Papers
The use of animals for therapeutic purposes has been done for centuries. It wasn’t until the 20th century when people began to realize the potential the human-animal interaction had on our overall health. Professionals and organizations began to implement animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and activities, and research began to see the benefits that it could produce. Animal-assisted therapy has shown to provide various populations of individuals with physiological and psychological benefits, including a decrease in anxiety and depression, better cardiovascular functioning, and an increase in socialization skills and functioning. AAT has the potential to provide the field of rehabilitation with …
The Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Families, Annie M. Debaillie
The Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Families, Annie M. Debaillie
Research Papers
For individuals who sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the disabling effects can greatly impact their life. The effects of a TBI can include physical, emotional, and cognitive impairments that can impact their ability to function in their everyday lives. The recovery process following a TBI can be extensive and costly. Many times the burden of the care and cost falls on the family of the individual with a TBI. Caring for the family member with a TBI can cause a disruption in the function of the family. This disruption can cause stress, anxiety, and burden within the family caregivers. …
Public Service Motivation, Role Ambiguity, And Job Satisfaction Among Municipal Police Officers, Katharine M. Volle
Public Service Motivation, Role Ambiguity, And Job Satisfaction Among Municipal Police Officers, Katharine M. Volle
Research Papers
Research in public management consistently asserts that public service motivation (PSM) facilitates beneficial work behaviors and attitudes. However, few studies have been designed to examine PSM in specific occupations. Law enforcement agencies may provide unique places to examine PSM because the public benefit of policing is directly and immediately observable by officers. Yet, law enforcement occupations are highly stressful. This study attempts to connect one form of occupational stress - role ambiguity -, public service motivation, and job satisfaction in municipal police officers. Findings from a regression model indicate that the dimensions of public service motivation are important drivers of …

Prediction-Learning In Infants As A Mechanism For Gaze Control During Object Exploration, Matthew Schlesinger, Scott P. Johnson, Dima Amso
Prediction-Learning In Infants As A Mechanism For Gaze Control During Object Exploration, Matthew Schlesinger, Scott P. Johnson, Dima Amso
Publications
We are pursuing the hypothesis that visual exploration and learning in young infants is achieved by producing gaze-sample sequences that are sequentially predictable. Our recent analysis of infants' gaze patterns during image free-viewing (Schlesinger & Amso, 2013) provides support for this idea. In particular, this work demonstrates that infants' gaze samples are more easily learnable than those produced by adults, as well as those produced by three artificial-observer models. In the current study, we extend these findings to a well-studied object-perception task, by investigating 3-month-olds' gaze patterns as they view a moving, partially-occluded object. We first use infants' gaze data …

Language Development Of Bilingual Russian/English Speaking Children Living In The United States: A Review Of The Literature, Jeanette D. Grosman
Language Development Of Bilingual Russian/English Speaking Children Living In The United States: A Review Of The Literature, Jeanette D. Grosman
Honors Theses
The number of bilingual speakers in the United States is increasing. Children in particular provide unique contributions and challenges to the English-speaking communities in which they live. Various aspects of the young bilingual population have been studied, including an emphasis on the communicative abilities and trends of such children. However, there is a paucity of research regarding communication of bilingual Russian/English-speaking children. The purpose of this project is to review the existing literature on the language development of bilingual Russian/English-speaking children as compared to that of monolingual English-speaking children to establish grounds for further research about this increasing population. The …
Effects Of Multiple Exemplar Instruction On The Emergence Of Derived Relations In Children With Developmental Disabilities, Bridget E. Munoz
Effects Of Multiple Exemplar Instruction On The Emergence Of Derived Relations In Children With Developmental Disabilities, Bridget E. Munoz
Honors Theses
Multiple Exemplar Instruction (MEI) was evaluated, as an instructional protocol, on its effectiveness of establishing derived tact relations (B-A) in three children with developmental disabilities. Educationally relevant stimuli in the form of constellations were used as stimuli in this study. Following assessment of current listener (A-B) and tact relations amongst participants, listener training was implemented in which participants were asked to “Point to” a dictated constellation out of four choices. Participants needed to respond with 88% accuracy in order to be tested on tact relations. In the event that participants failed tact test probes, Multiple Exemplar Instruction was introduced. Results …

Application Of Problem Based Learning And Mastery Learning To Multimedia Education, Gabriel J. Grant, Dominick E. Fazarro, Luke Steinke
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The current state of education and the workforce demands a special kind of learner capable of creativity, communicating effectively, analytical skill application, critical thinking, and problem solving. Whereas these skills are important, it is also a necessity for learners to be masters of the knowledge and skills that they have acquired. Traditional educational methods have proven to be somewhat ineffective in producing these results. Problem based learning has proven worthy in handling some of the load, however, mastery learning has been abandoned long ago for reasons in spite of its effectiveness. Through given examples and careful design, the educator will …
The Effects Of Universal Design For Learning On The Academic Engagement Of Middle School Students, Kimberly M. Johnson-Harris
The Effects Of Universal Design For Learning On The Academic Engagement Of Middle School Students, Kimberly M. Johnson-Harris
Dissertations
A multiple baseline across participants design was used to examine the impact of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), implemented as a total framework, on the academic engagement of middle school students with emotional or behavioral disorders (EBD), and students who are at-risk for academic failure due to behavior problems, who are included in general education classes. Five teachers from two middle schools participated in professional development on UDL and UDL lesson plan design and then implemented UDL lessons in their classes. Data were collected on the fidelity of UDL implementation, student academic engagement during lesson plan implementation, and teacher acceptability …
Transitions, Krista Rose Frohling
Transitions, Krista Rose Frohling
Theses
Transitions developed after experiencing one of the largest transitions of my life from an autonomous being and business owner to a pregnant woman to a mother, all during my three year Masters of Fine Art program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The first section of the show follows my emotional progression throughout pregnancy, as well as physical form, highlighting inner conflict. An emotional conflict and progression is illustrated through the use of emotional landscapes on the exterior walls of the space. Each emotional landscape is created from 25 canvas prints that I photographed on my mobile devices. The interior walls …
Factors That Lead Millennial Alumni To Donate To Their Alma Mater, Robert Andrew Morgan
Factors That Lead Millennial Alumni To Donate To Their Alma Mater, Robert Andrew Morgan
Dissertations
This study examined the characteristics and predictors of Millennial alumni who donated financially to their alma mater and those who did not by reviewing data from the Alumni Attitude Survey (AAS). The data set was composed of 2,108 Millennial respondents and 1,110 as Generation X respondents. This study can help university foundation and alumni association staff members to determine why their donors, specifically Millennial alumni, give to their institution and how to be more effective in requesting for a financial donation from them. Generating consistent support from alumni and other donors is an economic necessity for postsecondary institutions. As current …

Inflammatory And Conciliatory Rhetoric In The Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Content Analysis Of How Three Newspapers Covered Two Provocative Events, Oliver R. Witte
Dissertations
This study focuses on contrasting responses to two highly provocative acts from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Ariel Sharon's controversial visit to the Temple Mount in February 2000, and a Palestinian terrorist cell's suicide bombing of a nightclub in Tel Aviv in 2005. Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount in 2000 led to the second intifada, the bloodiest outbreak of violence in the conflict's recent history. However, what followed the suicide attack in Tel Aviv in 2005 were several weeks of restraint from both sides. This study positions media texts as antecedents and consequents to these two key focal points in history …
Effects Of Speaker's Accent In A Multimedia Tutorial On Non-Native Students' Learning And Attitudes, Lam Vien Cao Ngoc
Effects Of Speaker's Accent In A Multimedia Tutorial On Non-Native Students' Learning And Attitudes, Lam Vien Cao Ngoc
Dissertations
Research in the field of multimedia has yielded principles for the design of effective multimedia instructional messages including Mayer's principles regarding voice. According to the voice principle, students learn more deeply when the narration in a multimedia lesson is spoken by a native voice rather than a non-native voice. The generalizability of the voice principle has been demonstrated when applied to multimedia users who are native speakers of the language used in narration. However, three out of four English users are non-native speakers of English, and the vast majority of verbal exchanges in English do not involve any native speakers …

Risk Propensity, Self-Efficacy And Driving Behaviors Among Rural, Off-Duty Emergency Services Personnel, Michelle Yvonne Mclernon
Dissertations
Emergency medical services personnel work in a fast-paced, stressful environment requiring rapid, efficient response to critical situations, creating unique safety considerations within the workforce. With an occupational fatality rate notably higher than average, most of which are attributed to vehicular crashes, compounded by risks faced on rural roadways, rural EMS personnel face unique driving challenges that may be exacerbated by the very traits, self-efficacy and risk propensity, that may have initially drawn them to the profession. The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which rural EMS personnel engage in off-duty, risky driving behaviors and to examine …

Home Economics Programs Within Higher Education: A Typology, Sara Holtzman
Home Economics Programs Within Higher Education: A Typology, Sara Holtzman
Theses
Home economics programs through the 1920s served varied purposes within higher education. This typology addresses three types of home economics programs - teaching, extension, and academia- through the lens of characteristics, curricula, and examples. Reviewing historical events that lead into the differentiation of home economics programs throughout the United States offers unique insights into the reasons for the development of each type. This typology offers a different point of view in considering what home economics programs entailed, and defines the field as an intentional and academic program of study for the women of higher education.
Evaluation Of General And Specific Assistive Technology Knowledge Among Students With Disabilities In Postsecondary Environments, Randall Boen

The Perception Of English Syllable-Final Nasals By Saudi Esl Learners, Turki Nafea Alharbi
Theses
The present study examines Saudi ESL learner perception of three syllable-final English nasal contrasts: /m/-/n/, /m/-/©¯/, and /n/-/©¯/. It was based primarily on two models, the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) and the Speech Learning Model (SLM), in order to determine how Saudi ESL learners categorized nasal segments in their L2, English. In addition, other models, including the Markedness Differential Hypothesis (MDH), contributed in finding the most difficult contrast. The participants, consisting of 24 Saudis studying in the US, were asked to distinguish between 40 English monosyllabic words grouped into minimal pairs. Regardless of their length of exposure, participants had greater …
