Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot
Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Modern online contracts—often categorized as click-wrap, scroll-wrap, and browse-wrap agreements—are rarely read by users. Even if users attempt to read them, the use of long paragraphs and complex language creates a barrier for the average user to understand what they are agreeing to. Issues surrounding online contract formation have sparked litigation in recent years to determine the enforceability of these agreements. The current standard used by courts to determine the enforceability of online contact terms is whether the design of the interface would put the reasonably prudent user on inquiry notice of their existence. The standard of adequate notice has …
A Proposal To Reform The Institution Of Marriage In The Post-Dobbs Era Though The Twenty-Eighth Amendment, Allison J. Cozart
A Proposal To Reform The Institution Of Marriage In The Post-Dobbs Era Though The Twenty-Eighth Amendment, Allison J. Cozart
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In the United States, marriage is considered a fundamental right. In the summer of 2022, the Supreme Court ruled on a landmark decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. There were significant changes that came from this decision and implications that could heavily affect marriage rights in this country. While the majority opinion focused on overturning the right to abortion, Justice Thomas’s concurrence shed light on the possibility that marriage might have been “wrongfully decided.” Thus, creating an uproar from American citizens across the country. In 2015, the Court recognized same-sex marriage as legally valid and held that all …
The Role Of Apologies In Labor Arbitration Outcomes, Michele Hoyman, Lamont Stallworth, David Kershaw
The Role Of Apologies In Labor Arbitration Outcomes, Michele Hoyman, Lamont Stallworth, David Kershaw
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This article considers the extent to which apologies provided by grievants affect the rulings of labor arbitrators in discipline and discharge cases. We used an experimental survey design which asked respondents to render awards on hypothetical arbitration cases. Hypothetical cases varied across four variables of importance: (1) the (perceived) sincerity of an apology, (2) the timing of the apology, (3) the issue in the case—sexual harassment, insubordination due to refusal to work, and insubordination due to profanity, and (4) the seniority of the grievant. All members of the National Academy of Arbitrators were surveyed, which provided a total of 177 …

During the Qajar era, photography was exclusively in the hands of the king and the courtiers. After many years, it first made its way into the studios of the capital and then into studios in other major cities. The revolution, the war, and the subsequent years brought about various social and cultural conditions in Iran. Following the emergence of new intellectual and ideological movements, artistic trends also underwent changes, leading to the teaching of various art disciplines, including photography, in art universities and the pursuit of artistic photography in a new form. As a result of these changes, women were …
A Constructivist Grounded Theory Exploration Of Intergenerational Trauma Among Lgbtq+ Bipoc Individuals, Satveer Kler
A Constructivist Grounded Theory Exploration Of Intergenerational Trauma Among Lgbtq+ Bipoc Individuals, Satveer Kler
Dissertations
Many scholars have argued that existing conceptualizations of trauma such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th Ed.; DSM-5) conceptualization are inapplicable for individuals of marginalized communities. Individuals of marginalized communities may experience historical trauma, racial trauma, identity-related trauma, or collective trauma. Moreover, the effects of these forms of trauma may persist throughout different generations via biological transmission (e.g., epigenetics) or via interpersonal transmission (e.g., emotion socialization, cultural socialization, attachment, communication styles, behavioral socialization). The generational effects of these forms of trauma are referred to as intergenerational trauma. There has been a paucity of empirical explorations of …
Individual Differences In Perceptions Of Organizational Career Culture: A Fit Theory Perspective, Diogo Alberto Seixas
Individual Differences In Perceptions Of Organizational Career Culture: A Fit Theory Perspective, Diogo Alberto Seixas
Dissertations
Attracting and retaining talent has been one of the most critical elements for business success. As organizations have different cultures within themselves, the organizational career culture communicates the organizational beliefs and practices valued for career success through organizational signals about career priorities. Using a scenario-based study, we explore individual preferences regarding four career cultures built on two dimensions of career signals: assimilation versus differentiation and intrinsic versus extrinsic rewards. We choose group beliefs, desirability of control, competitiveness, and protean career orientation as important traits because they clearly relate to the career signals and fit nicely in the organization’s career cultures. …

Am I Underpaid Because I Am An Immigrant? Exploring The Lived Experiences Of The Skilled Temporary Worker Visa Holders In Stem Occupations In The American Workplace, Aynur Charkasova, Ahmed Al-Asfour
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Whether documented or undocumented, migrant workers have always been in the center of significant debate in the United States. The presence of high-skilled immigrant workers receives constant attention amid immigration policy discussions. In the United States, the demand for temporary workers has doubled since the 1990s, particularly in the wake of the technology boom. Many employers have found temporary worker visa programs useful for hiring foreign talent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations. While skilled immigration provides benefits for the American workforce, there are concerns about the impact of skilled immigration on native workers and wage inequality. This study …

Differences Between Male And Female Welding Students’ Tinkering Self-Efficacy, Kjersti Decker, Michael Pate, Tyson Sorensen, Michelle S. Burrows, Katie N. Kraus, Don Edgar
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Welding, agricultural mechanics and blue-collar trades have traditionally been perceived to be reserved for males, yet many females in recent years have enrolled in training programs and have entered these careers (England, 2010). In previous research, females have indicated lower levels of tinkering self-efficacy and confidence in mechanics settings (Baker & Krause, 2007). This study examined difference between male and female welding student’s perceptions of welding technology, tinkering self-efficacy, and perceptions of learning welding technology. Students were engaged in designated tinkering activities throughout the semester to promote developing tinkering abilities. Activities included but were not limited to GMAW and …

The participants were interviewed using themed theoretical framework questions. Results: The results identified concerns related to all subsystems. Academic (microsystem and mesosystem) challenges included a lack …
Matrix Training For Expanding The Communication Of Toddlers And Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jacy Durdel, Maggie Ratcliff
Matrix Training For Expanding The Communication Of Toddlers And Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jacy Durdel, Maggie Ratcliff
Honors Theses
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly display a range of deficits from communication skills to play skills. When the ability to generalize is improved, a greater number of stimuli can be learned without having to be directly taught, which can be done through matrix training. Matrix training provides a framework for actively teaching a singular exemplar of a target, and, through recombination, many more stimuli can be learned. Participant is a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with ASD who was taught noun-verb combinations through tactile movement of figurines. All targets are tested before and after the single stimulus of each …

The Suzuki Method: History, Philosophy, And Contemporary Implications, Catherine Begin
Research Papers
Abstract
The Suzuki method emphasizes early musical intervention, involvement of parents/caregivers, and a musical home environment as foundational tenets of its philosophy. Parent involvement and home environment in general education (PI-HE) and in music (PI-HEM) has been operationalized and explored in a growing body of research. Most existing PI-HEM research has measured elementary and instrumental students in grades 4-12, while few studies have measure PI-HEM in preschoolers aged 3-5. Further exploration of the Suzuki Method through the lens of contemporary PI-HE literature could reveal a more specific understanding of the Suzuki Method in our modern landscape so that a conversation …

Evaluating Student Success On The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination At A Midwest University, Stacey Mckinney
Ed.D. Capstone Reports
The purpose of the study is to determine if preparatory measures, including the HESI exit examination and an on-campus board review course, helped increase first time pass rates on the NBDHE at a Midwest University. I compared national pass rates and school pass rates and observed school pass rates have been consistently below the national average for seven years. I utilized four cohorts of graduating students. One group was not provided with any preparatory measures, two groups were provided with the HESI examination only, and one group was provided with the HESI examination and an on-campus board review.
Student’s HESI …

The current study aims to examine rural residents’ attitudes regarding sex offenders and their perceptions of the recidivism rates of these types of individuals. Data from qualitative interviews of rural Illinois residents (N=24) will be used. This archival data will be coded with NVivo software to determine the prevalence of certain responses indicating positive or negative attitudes as well as perceptions of both adult and juvenile recidivism rates. Through the examination and analyses of the coded data, this study will help determine what kind of attitudes rural residents in southern Illinois harbor towards sex offenders and how that may correlate …
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments And Human Mutilation On Impulsive Behavior: A Systematic Replication Of Hurtado-Parrado Et Al. (2023), Blair Williams
Research Papers
Flora et al. (1992, 2003) found that intense noise or pain caused by cold pressor procedure increased the number of impulsive responses (choice of a smaller-sooner reinforcer over a larger-later reinforcer) when presented concurrently with a choice task. Hurtado-Parrado et al. (2023) and Orozco-Barrios (2023) recently conducted systematic replications using aversive visual stimuli via a matching-to-sample task, but the results were inconsistent in reproducing the disruptive effect on self-control behavior reported by Flora et al. In a separate line of research, Berry et al. (2014, 2015) demonstrated changes in impulsive behavior with simple and brief exposure to images of Natural …
An Attentionless Account Of The Attentional Blink, Matthew Stephen Junker
An Attentionless Account Of The Attentional Blink, Matthew Stephen Junker
Dissertations
Theories of the attentional blink (AB) – a deficit in responding to the second of two temporally proximal stimuli (within 500 ms; Raymond et al., 1992) – generally explain the deficit as resulting from either the dynamics in top-down and bottom-up attentional process, or limitations in the capacity of the hypothesized attentional process. Extensive basic research has been conducted on the neural correlates of top-down and bottom-up attention as well as on the capacity limitations of attention; however, rather than leading to a single definition, the variety and complexity of results has led several taxonomies which differ systematically with the …

Bridging Perspectives Through Dialogic Exchanges: Intercultural Communication In Disability Support Services, Danielle Jerolds
Research Papers
This research report delves into the complexities of the disabled student body accessing accommodations and seeking needs to be met specifically pertaining to disability support services (DSS) as a campus resource. It employs fictional dialogues and composite characters to vividly illustrate the interactions between students, parents, and DSS staff, highlighting the challenges in communication and accommodation. An intercultural communication perspective is used to pave the way to think about difference, specifically how it pertains to disability as an identity categorization. The paper contrasts the social and medical models of disability, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of these perspectives. …
Religion, Commercialism, And Identity In Equiano And Douglass's "Narratives", Ashley Mueth
Religion, Commercialism, And Identity In Equiano And Douglass's "Narratives", Ashley Mueth
Research Papers
Slave narratives, involving enslaved persons, tell the personal accounts of the lives and struggles faced by Africans during the slave trade. From the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, the abolitionist movement evolved, resulting in anti-slavery campaigns across the United States and Europe. In this paper, I will analyze two renowned slave narratives, first Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative and secondly, Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life. I argue that in Equiano’s discourses he appeals to authority figures to advocate against slavery, however Douglass distrusts authority figures and determines that slaveowners are complicit in maintaining systems of oppression. This article addresses …

The Legislations And Regulations Of Social Media- A Study Of 2 Countries – United States, Canada, Laura Mircea
Research Papers
In today’s society, social media is widely popular to use for many different reasons such as communicating, marketing, networking etc. However, with social media rapidly expanding and the usage growing exponentially, it can become dangerous. Some of these dangers include privacy exposure, invasion of privacy, cyberbullying, harassment, exploitation etc. One of the bigger challenges faced is protecting children and minors on social media, and preventing false news and rumors from circling. While some countries have stricter social media laws and rules implemented by the government, other countries rely on the social media platforms themselves to regulate and protect users from …

Teaching Philosophy As A Pedagogic Practice-Ing: Are You The Type Of Person That Says, “Everything Happens For A Reason”?, Valerie Oved Giovanini Ph.D.
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In this paper, I discuss a classroom activity that was intended to create an environment attentive enough for students to scrutinize whether their touted beliefs matched their implicit assumptions. Drawing upon Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of the face-to-face relation, Carol A. Taylor’s posthuman orientations for pedagogical practice-ings, and Bickel’s and Fisher’s emergent theory of art-care, I explore my pedagogical approach in teaching philosophy to explain how affective encounters in communitas between teacher and learners can expand personal understandings and imagine new meaningful possibilities together. These affective encounters serve an ethic of concern where each is capable of a unique response and …

Collective Memory And Creative Subjectivity: A Living Conversation, Alexandra Katherine Goodall, Alba Torres Robinat
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article is the record of a dialogue between two artists and Expressive Arts therapists, Alba Torres Robinat and Alexandra Katherine Goodall. They chose to undertake this conversation in the form of letters that were written back-and-forth over a period of time in a shared document, which places their correspondence in the tradition of epistolary writing. This decision to write the article as letters lends the conversation an immediacy, a warmth, a sense of time, distance and familiarity, and a feeling of intimacy.
The authors invite readers to witness the deepening of a relationship and the development of their conversational …
