A Characterization Of Power Method Transformations Through L-Moments, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2011

A Characterization Of Power Method Transformations Through L-Moments, Todd C. Headrick

Publications

Power method polynomial transformations are commonly used for simulating continuous nonnormal distributions with specified moments. However, conventional moment-based estimators can (a) be substantially biased, (b) have high variance, or (c) be influenced by outliers. In view of these concerns, a characterization of power method transformations by L-moments is introduced. Specifically, systems of equations are derived for determining coefficients for specified L-moment ratios, which are associated with standard normal and standard logistic-based polynomials of order five and three. Boundaries for L-moment ratios are also derived, and closed-formed formulae are provided for determining if a power method distribution has …

The Daily Brew: The Structural Evolution Of The Coffee Party On Facebook During The 2010 United States Midterm Election Season, Christopher Mascaro, Sean P. Goggins Jan 2011

The Daily Brew: The Structural Evolution Of The Coffee Party On Facebook During The 2010 United States Midterm Election Season, Christopher Mascaro, Sean P. Goggins

2011

The activity of the Facebook Group, "Join the Coffee Party Movement" (Coffee Party) is studied during a 7-month period leading up to and following the 2010 United States Midterm election. During this time, Coffee Party Facebook page administrators posted 872 parent posts that received 152,762 comments from group members. Utilizing our previously established method (Mascaro & Goggins, 2011) for extracting and analyzing electronic trace data, we constructed a weighted social network from the parent posts and associated comments. We measured network centralization and total post activity for the entire network and identified individuals with high betweenness centrality across three dimensions: …

Networks And Language In The 2010 Election, Avishay Livne, Matthew P. Simmons, W. Abraham Gong, Eytan Adar, Lada A. Adamic

2011

The midterm (2010) election in the U.S. presented a unique opportunity to study the online social media strategy of various political groups. Although candidates had previously leveraged social media, the prevalence of use during this election allows us to study a significant percentage of candidates and a novel glimpse into their networks and messaging. In combination, the networks and associated content reflect positioning of candidates both structurally and in framing in relation to other politicians. In our work, we study the use of Twitter by House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates during the midterm elections in the U.S. Our data includes …

Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry Jan 2011

Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry

2011

In this paper I explore the underlying mechanisms of the changes in public discourse with respect to the issue of racial equality that have been observed in the United States over the course of its history, with a particular focus on the changes that occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century. Specifically, I provide a formal model of social interactions in which agents are assigned to non-homophilic networks, are heterogeneous with respect to preferences for equality between the races, and have preferences both to express their true preferences and to not appear deviant from the group. In a …

An Examination Of Multiple Predictors Of Orthographic Functioning., Glenn R Mesman, Michelle Y. Kibby Jan 2011

An Examination Of Multiple Predictors Of Orthographic Functioning., Glenn R Mesman, Michelle Y. Kibby

Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare three variables in terms of how well they predict orthographic functioning. To this end, the authors examined the relative contributions of rapid automatic naming, exposure to print, and visual processing to a composite measure of orthographic functioning in a heterogeneous group of 8- to 12-year-old children. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that rapid naming, exposure to print, and visual processing were each predictive of orthographic functioning when controlling for the other variables as well as vocabulary knowledge and phonological awareness. Thus, it appears that both linguistic and visual abilities are related to orthographic …

Mobbing, Bullying, & Harassment: A Silent Dilemma In The Workplace, Tammy L. Shelton

Research Papers

Mobbing, bullying and harassment in the workplace are problems that workers have experienced and continue too. There is a need in the United States for further study and a greater understanding of this problem. With a process in place to handle these cases, those being mobbed would have a resource to access. This study is a review of previous literature to increase awareness about mobbing, bullying, and harassment in the workplace.

Power Branding By Wsiu: A Case Study Of A Public Television Brand Campaign, Kyla J. Zaggy, Kyla Zaggy

Research Papers

The focus of this research paper is a case study charting the development of the WSIU brand campaign for television. WSIU Public Broadcasting is in the midst of a brand roll out campaign with its own positioning strategy centralized in its tagline, Powered by You®. For WSIU-TV, the idea is to create soft sell testimonial spots in which WSIU supporters engage the audience with compelling stories about how public television has made an impact on their lives.

By comparing the elements of branding and practices alongside WSIU’s Powered by You campaign, an attempt will be made to characterize and …

News Framing Of Google’S Withdrawal From China: A Comparison Between American And Chinese Newspaper, Yezi Hu

Research Papers

To compare how different Chinese newspapers and American newspapers frame the issue of Google’s withdrawal from China, I choose China Daily and the New York Times as representatives, adopting an inductive framing analysis method in this research. I systematically choose twenty percent of articles covering the issue from their official website and analyze metaphors, exemplars, catchphrases, depictions in the articles. Moreover, I discuss how ideology, ownership, economic structures, and shareholders influence the framing process as crucial factors.

Accounting For The Troubled Starlet: Medicalization And Femininity In The Age Of News Punditry, Mallary B. Allen

Research Papers

This article examines contributions of television news media to the dominant cultural dialogue regarding young women’s deviance as demonstrated by pundit commentary concerning the criminal behavior of young female celebrities.  Using a case study of actress Lindsay Lohan, I examine the accounts that pundits offer for the deviance of these young women and whether medical and psychological explanations enter discourse in a significant way.  Additionally, I examine the extent to which feminine mental health issues contribute to the creation of a cultural stock character evocative of tragic, female literary archetypes.  I find that mental and psychological health dialogue is pervasive …

Behavior Analysis And Addictive Behavior: A Chance For Change, Mary Avery Jan 2011

Behavior Analysis And Addictive Behavior: A Chance For Change, Mary Avery

Research Papers

Abstract

Drug dependence is a far-reaching problem that goes beyond the individual to society at large. While a myriad of substances have addictive properties, the scope of this review is limited to crack cocaine – how the brain, specifically the mesolimbic dopamine system, is compromised by administration of crack cocaine, physiological changes and the relevance of dopamine levels to susceptibility to addiction.

Studies based on the use of behavior analysis tools including functional analysis, positive and negative reinforcement, delayed discounting, contingency management, stages of readiness, motivation for change, and determining alternate behaviors as replacements for addictive behavior are included. Participants …

A History And Definition Of Green Roof Technology With Recommendations For Future Research, John D. Magill, Karen Midden, John Groninger, Matthew Therrell

Research Papers

Green roof technology has a history that predates the modern era. Many functions of green roofs utilized during human history are analogous to contemporary functions. The justification of the use of green roof technology based on a review of literature shows the multiple and documented benefits that these systems can impart to the urban environment. A case study of the installation of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale green roof, showed the actual process of constructing the system. The maintenance and observation of this system gives firsthand experience. Interviews with green roof professionals allow greater understanding of current research needs. Finally, …

A/R/Tographic Collaboration As Radical Relatedness, Barbara Bickel, Stephanie Springgay, Ruth Beer, Rita L. Irwin, Kit Grauer, Gu Xiong

Publications

In this paper the authors examine a/r/tographical collaboration in a communityengaged research study investigating immigrant understandings of home and place. The study, The City of Richgate, involves a complex collaboration between community members, community organizations, educational institutions, and a research team comprising artist-educators. The study crosses border zones of cultural, ethnic, geographic, institutional, public, private, and disciplinary boundaries, reflecting the ever-changing character of postmodern reality. In this paper the authors reflect critically and theoretically on the lived experience of radical relatedness found within the complex collaboration, particularly within the a/r/tographic research team. This offers a qualitative methodology of radical …

Re/Turning To Her: An A/R/Tographic Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel, Tannis Hugill Jan 2011

Re/Turning To Her: An A/R/Tographic Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel, Tannis Hugill

Publications

This article reaches into the depths of a collaborative a/r/tographic ritual inquiry between two women artist-educators-priestesses. Within this we reflect on the intersections of research, art, spirituality, and education as thresholds of collaborative learning. Throughout the ritual-infused research process, we generated source material and imagery from trance, Authentic Movement, the labyrinth, reflective writing and co-interviews. Each of these process practices took us outside of ourselves, and attuned us to Spirit, offering a larger perspective on the inquiry while simultaneously bringing us closer to actualizing the performance ritual. In co-creating what became a performative ritual narrative of the loss and restoration …

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller Jan 2011

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller

2011

An enduring issue in the study of political participation is the extent to which political awareness and engagement are socially or individually motivated.  We address these issues in the context of a municipal election which generated a high level of political engagement on the part of college students for whom the election was relevant.  An effort was made to interview all these students using an on-line survey, and the students were asked to provide information on their friendship networks.  The paper demonstrates that awareness and engagement are not simply a consequence of individually defined interests and awareness, but rather that …

Policy Coordination In An Ecology Of Water Management Games, Mark N. Lubell, Garry Robins, Peng Wang Jan 2011

Policy Coordination In An Ecology Of Water Management Games, Mark N. Lubell, Garry Robins, Peng Wang

2011

Policy outcomes in all but the simplest policy systems emerge from a complex of ecology of games featuring multiple actors, policy institutions, and issues, and not just single policies operating in isolation.  This paper updates Long's (1958) ecology of games framework with Scharpf's (1997) actor-centered institutionalism to analyze the coordinating roles of actors and institutions on the context of the ecology of water management games in the San Francisco Bay.  Actors participating in multiple institutions are analyzed using exponential random graph models for bipartite networks representing different assumptions about policy behavior, including geographic constraints.  We find that policy coordination is …

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park Jan 2011

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park

2011

This study explores the structural embeddedness of board interlocks in financial analysts’ firm coverage ties. Drawing on the theories of triangular ties, I conceptualize the relationship between financial analysts, a focal CEO, and the interlock director as a triad and examine how the positivity or negativity of analyst stock recommendations regarding the focal firm CEO and the interlock directors influence the maintenance of the board interlock ties. The theoretical perspectives and empirical findings of this study suggest that a structural shift from open to closed triad, where the focal firm CEO and the interlock director are followed by a common …

Local Connections: Electoral Institutions, Social Networks, And Local Politicians In A Developing Democracy, Amy E. Smith Jan 2011

Local Connections: Electoral Institutions, Social Networks, And Local Politicians In A Developing Democracy, Amy E. Smith

2011

This paper explores the impacts of electoral institutions on citizens’ social networks and political engagement, using the case of Brazil. Brazil’s combination of open-list proportional representation and extreme multipartism leads to high numbers of connections between citizens and local politicians and activists. Survey data from a 2008 city council race reveal that a very high percentage of respondents know both politicians and activists. Such connections serve as an important source of political socialization and mobilization. Using coarsened exact matching, I show that these ties affect campaign learning, turnout, and clientelistic dispositions, and that they often have a more powerful effect …

Testing Policy Theory With Statistical Models Of Networks, Mark N. Lubell, John Scholz, Ramiro Berardo, Garry Robins Jan 2011

Testing Policy Theory With Statistical Models Of Networks, Mark N. Lubell, John Scholz, Ramiro Berardo, Garry Robins

2011

Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual framework for clarifying the network hypotheses embedded in policy theories and how they relate to macro-level political outcomes and micro-level political behavior.  We then describe the role of statistical models of networks for testing these hypotheses, including the problem of operationalizing theoretical concepts with the parameters of statistical models.  Examples from existing policy research are provided and potential extensions are discussed.  This paper is forthcoming as the introduction to a special issue of the Policy Studies Journal on statistical models of policy networks.

Skill Specialization And The Formation Of Collaboration Networks, Katharine A. Anderson Jan 2011

Skill Specialization And The Formation Of Collaboration Networks, Katharine A. Anderson

2011

Problem solving and innovation are important in many contexts, including academic research, policy-making, product development, and entrepreneurship. Broadly speaking, innovators come in two varieties: specialists and generalists. Specialists are people who have a deep knowledge of a very narrow subject area. Generalists are people whose knowledge ranges across multiple subject areas. In this paper, I examine the role of skill specialization in collaboration network structure, and individual position in the collaborative community. Using a model of skill specialization and collaboration network formation, I show that as disci- plines become less insular, the collaboration network becomes increasingly domi- nated by a …
