Using Siblings And Peers As Therapists To Increase Language Skills, Specifically Pragmatics, Melissa J. Watson Miss
Using Siblings And Peers As Therapists To Increase Language Skills, Specifically Pragmatics, Melissa J. Watson Miss
Research Papers
A Child’s language is influenced by their interactions with other typically developing children. However, children with disabilities often have less interaction with typically developing peers. This study looked at using typically developing peers or siblings in therapy in order to facilitate language development, especially pragmatics. Several studies were reviewed including ones that focused on using siblings or peers in therapy with children with Down’s syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and specific language impairment. These studies include various techniques for training and involving the sibling/peer, as well as strategies for therapy. Although results varied among the studies, the overall finding is that …
Gender Differences And Similarities In Adolescents' Ways Of Coping, Bettina Piko
Gender Differences And Similarities In Adolescents' Ways Of Coping, Bettina Piko
The Psychological Record
Various factors have an influence on which coping strategies
are mobilized under specific circumstances, among others, age
and gender. The present paper focuses on the interrelationships
between the ways of coping and some health-related variables in
adolescence. Data were collected among secondary school
students (n = 1039) in Szeged, Hungary: Factor analysis of the
shortened and adapted version of the Ways of Coping
Questionnaire gave a four-factor solution: passive coping,
problem-analyzing coping, risky coping, and support-seeking
coping. Passive and support-seeking ways of coping were more
common among girls, however, this latter way of coping proved to
be a more significant …
The Impact Of Acculturation On Sport Motivation Among Mexican-American Adolescent Athletes, Todd A. Ryska
The Impact Of Acculturation On Sport Motivation Among Mexican-American Adolescent Athletes, Todd A. Ryska
The Psychological Record
Although sport psychology research has revealed differences
in motivational orientation among athletes from various ethnic
groups (Duda, 1985, 1986a; Whitehead, 1986), no work has
addressed the impact of within-group variation in acculturation on
motivational goal perspectives. Multiple regression analyses were
conducted on data generated from young Mexican-American male
(n = 83) and female (n = 80) athletes. Among males, the
acculturation dimensions of media use (f3 = .265, P < .001) and
ethnic social relations (f3 = .188, P < .001) significantly predicted a
task goal perspective, explaining 32% of the variance, whereas
increased ego involvement among female athletes was
significantly predicted by language use (f3 = .336, …
Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie
Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie
The Psychological Record
This review addresses the etiology of bipolar disorder and
presents the literature within a psychological behaviorism
framework (Staats, 1996; Staats & Heiby, 1985). The proposed
theory attempts to provide an integrative developmental approach
that is grounded in established behavioral principles. The bipolar
theory posits 15 hypotheses based on past and concurrent
biological and situational factors as well as their interactions with
an individual's basic behavioral repertoires. Implications for
subclassification and treatment research are noted.

The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure As A Measure Of Self-Esteem, C Alix Timko, Erica L. England, James D. Herbert, Evan M. Forman
The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure As A Measure Of Self-Esteem, C Alix Timko, Erica L. England, James D. Herbert, Evan M. Forman
The Psychological Record
Two studies were conducted to pilot the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) in measuring attitudes toward the self: one related to body image specifically and another assessing the broader construct of self-esteem. Study 1 utilized the IRAP with female college students to examine self-referential beliefs regarding body image. Results revealed positive associations between self-referential beliefs on the IRAP and explicit measures of body image satisfaction and acceptance, likelihood of dieting, and internalization of the thin ideal. In Study 2, an IRAP measuring general self-esteem revealed positive correlations between IRAP performance and explicit measures of psychological functioning and negative correlations between …
What Do Mental Terms Mean?, Jay Moore
What Do Mental Terms Mean?, Jay Moore
The Psychological Record
Psychologists and philosophers have long been interested in two questions: (a) What do mental terms mean? and (b) what role do mental terms play in explanations of behavior? In the current sketch I review how mediational neobehaviorism, cognitive psychology, and the radical behaviorism of B. F. Skinner address these questions. In so doing, I seek to clarify the meaning of mental terms, as well as their role in explanations of behavior.

A Sketch Of The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (Irap) And The Relational Elaboration And Coherence (Rec) Model, Dermot Barnes-Holmes, Yvonne Barnes-Holmes, Ian Stewart, Shawn Boles
The Psychological Record
The current article outlines a behavior-analytic approach to the study of socalled implicit attitudes and cognition. The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP), the conceptual basis of which was derived from relational frame theory, is offered as a methodology that may be used in the experimental analysis of implicit attitudes and beliefs. The relational elaboration and coherence (REC) model provides a possible relational-frame account of the findings that have emerged from the IRAP. The article first outlines the research history that led to the development of the IRAP, followed by a description of the method. The REC model and how it …

More Misbehavior Of Organisms: A Psi Chi Lecture By Marian And Robert Bailey, Elson M. Bihm, J Arthur Gillaspy Jr, Hannah J. Abbott, William J. Lammers
The Psychological Record
In 1992, Dr. Marian Breland Bailey, assisted by her husband Robert E. Bailey, gave the following presentation at the Psi Chi Banquet of the University of Central Arkansas. She and her first husband, Keller Breland, were students of B. F. Skinner and established Animal Behavior Enterprises (ABE) in 1947 and the IQ Zoo in 1955. Unknown to many historians of psychology, most of ABE’s projects extended outside the confines of the IQ Zoo and included work for the military, fairs, parks, businesses, and entertainment venues. Dr. Bailey’s Psi Chi lecture should prove invaluable to students, researchers, and scholars, for it …

Iq Zoo And Teaching Operant Concepts, Elson M. Bihm, J Arthur Gillaspy Jr, William J. Lammers, Stephanie P. Huffman
The Psychological Record
Psychology texts often cite the work of Marian and Keller Breland and their business, Animal Behavior Enterprises (ABE), to demonstrate operant conditioning and the “misbehavior of organisms” from an evolutionary perspective. Now available on the Internet at the official IQ Zoo website (http://www3.uca. edu/iqzoo/), the artifacts of ABE’s work, in the form of photographs, documents, and audio/video recordings, provide a wealth of concrete examples of operant and evolutionary contingencies. Included in this site is the related work of Robert E. Bailey. These exhibits and their associated learning materials are relevant to many courses, including introductory psychology, psychology of learning, behavior …

On Misconceptions About Behavior Analysis Among University Students And Teachers, Erik Arntzen, Jon Lokke, Gunn Lokke, Dag-Erik Eilertsen
The Psychological Record
Students frequently show misconceptions regarding scientific psychology in general and basic concepts in behavior analysis in particular. We wanted to replicate the study by Lamal (1995) and to expand the study by including some additional statements. In the current study, the focus was on misconceptions about behavior analysis held by undergraduates, by students in a master program in behavior analysis, by teachers in university colleges, and by a group of students without any formal training in psychology. The results showed that participants in all groups showed misconceptions. Students in the master program held the fewest misconceptions, while traditional psychology students …
Measures Of Implicit And Explicit Attitudes Toward Mainstream And Bdsm Sexual Terms Using The Irap And Questionaire With Bdsm/Fetish And Student Participants, Fawna M. Stockwell, Diana J. Walker, John W. Eshleman
Measures Of Implicit And Explicit Attitudes Toward Mainstream And Bdsm Sexual Terms Using The Irap And Questionaire With Bdsm/Fetish And Student Participants, Fawna M. Stockwell, Diana J. Walker, John W. Eshleman
The Psychological Record
The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) examines implicit attitudes through the measurement of response latencies. In this study, the IRAP was used to assess implicit attitudes toward “mainstream” sexual terms (e.g., Kissing) and “BDSM” terms (e.g., Bondage) among individuals reporting BDSM interests and among students who did not report such interests. A questionnaire was used to measure explicit attitudes toward the same sexual terms as well as self-reported sexual behaviors. Results showed that the Student group generally displayed pro-mainstream attitudes, while the BDSM group displayed pro-BDSM attitudes. These effects were mirrored in the questionnaire results, which provides support for the …

The Valued Living Questionnaire: Defining And Measuring Valued Action Within A Behavioral Framework, Kelly G. Wilson, Emily K. Sandoz, Jennifer Kitchens, Miguel Roberts
The Psychological Record
A number of cognitive-behavior therapies now strongly emphasize particular behavioral processes as mediators of clinical change specific to that therapy. This shift in emphasis calls for the development of measures sensitive to changes in the therapies’ processes. Among these is acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which posits valued living as one of its primary core processes. This article offers a definition of values from a behavioral perspective and describes the Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ) as a first attempt at assessment of valued living. The VLQ is a relatively brief and easily administered instrument derived directly from the primary text on …
Schedules Of Reinforcement At 50: A Retrospective Application, David L. Morgan
Schedules Of Reinforcement At 50: A Retrospective Application, David L. Morgan
The Psychological Record
Published just over a half century ago, Schedules of Reinforcement (SOR) (Ferster & Skinner, 1957) marked the seminal empirical contribution of the book’s second author and ushered in an era of research on behavior–environment relationships. This article traces the origins of both the methods and the data presented in SOR, and its legacy within experimental psychology. The operant methodology outlined in SOR revolutionized the study of behavior pharmacology and early investigations of choice behavior. More recently, schedules have been used to examine microeconomic behavior, gambling, memory, and contingency detection and causal reasoning in infants, children, and adults. Implications of schedules …
Philosophy Of Science, With Special Consideration Given To Behaviorism As The Philosophy Of The Science Of Behavior, J Moore
The Psychological Record
The philosophy of science is the branch of philosophy that critically examines the foundations, assumptions, methods, products, and implications of the activity called science. The present sketch reviews the historical development of the philosophy of science, representative individuals in the field, and topics of long-standing interest. The sketch is intended to prepare readers for subsequent discussions on behaviorism, cognitive psychology, and the meaning of mental terms.
Varieties Of Stimulus Control In Matching-To-Sample: A Kernal Analysis, Lanny Fields, Michelle Garruto, Mari Watanabe
Varieties Of Stimulus Control In Matching-To-Sample: A Kernal Analysis, Lanny Fields, Michelle Garruto, Mari Watanabe
The Psychological Record
Conditional discrimination or matching-to-sample procedures have been used to study a wide range of complex psychological phenomena with infrahuman and human subjects. In most studies, the percentage of trials in which a subject selects the comparison stimulus that is related to the sample stimulus is used to index the control exerted by the relation between the stimuli. Performances indexed by percentage correct based on an aggregation across single trials, however, cannot identify the stimulus control topographies that exert momentary control of responding in a matching-to-sample milieu. The behavioral kernel is a unit of analysis that can provide such a measure. …
