Characterization Of Proteostasis Mechanisms In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Amanda M. Blocker Jun 2021

Characterization Of Proteostasis Mechanisms In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Amanda M. Blocker

Theses

Chlamydia trachomatis is a gram negative, obligate intracellular pathogen with a highly reduced genome of ~1 Mbp. It is the leading cause of the reportable sexually transmitted infection known as chlamydia in the United States and is the leading cause of preventable blindness (trachoma) worldwide. While treatment of infections is possible, weaknesses of current approaches include treatment failure, antibiotic-induced dysbiosis, and resistance development of bystander bacteria during chlamydial treatment. These weaknesses support the need for improved therapeutic approaches. C. trachomatis undergoes a biphasic developmental cycle with two forms, the infectious elementary body (EB) and replicative reticulate body (RB), that have …

Preference Of Dynamic Stretching And Static Stretching Among Division I Athletes From Southern Illinois University Of Carbondale, Emma Baalman

Research Papers

Researchers have long debated the question of proper warm-up protocol; however, research concerning the preference of athletes is scarce. Dynamic and static stretching both have positive and negative aspects and many of these features are influenced heavily by the time point during exercise in which they are executed. The purpose of this paper is to determine the preferences of either static stretching or dynamic stretching as a part of warm-up routine. Division I collegiate athletes from Southern Illinois University Carbondale answered survey questions regarding the type of stretching techniques they use and why they utilize them. Upon completion of the …

An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson Dec 2020

An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson

Theses

This study presented meat consumption as an environmentally relevant behavior (ERB) and examined how the delay to an environmental loss might affect peoples’ decisions to eat meat. Participants completed a delay discounting survey where they selected what percentage of meat they would eliminate from their diet based on varying delays to rising sea levels flooding of their neighborhood. After watching a brief educational video, participants completed the survey a second time to examine whether the video had any influence on discounting rates in the post-survey. Participants also completed the 27-Item Monetary Choice Questionnaire (MCQ; Kirby & Marakovic, 1996) in order …

The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula Dec 2020

The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula

Theses

Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing animal production sector. Because the aquaculture sector is growing at rapid rates, certain materials for feed, specifically marine protein sources, are becoming increasingly expensive and unsustainable. To counteract the reliance on fishmeal (FM) and other marine protein sources in the industry plant protein (PP), specifically soybean meal (SBM), has been investigated to replace FM as a protein source. Unfortunately, SBM when given in high quantities (greater than 30%) has been shown to negatively affect fish performance including retarded growth, intestinal inflammation, reduction of spawn quality, as well as dysbiosis in the gut microbiome, most …

Citizens' Opinions Regarding A Checkout Bag Tax Proposal, Jorden Thomas Nov 2020

Citizens' Opinions Regarding A Checkout Bag Tax Proposal, Jorden Thomas

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

The need to address single-use plastic bag damage to our environment has grown exponentially across the globe. States and communities are taking legislative action to address the harm produced through the form of taxation and/or plastic bag bans. This paper provides insight into the contradictory evidence that is cited in favor or opposition to such legislation across the globe. Further, this paper seeks to determine the positions of Illinois citizens on their willingness to support a state-wide tax or ban on all plastic shopping bags received from retail establishments through the use of public opinion polling. Finally, the impacts of …

Peer-reviewed Articles

Heterotopic and orthotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation techniques, currently used in humans, will become promising alternative methods for fertility preservation in domestic and wild animals. Thus, this study describes for the first time the efficiency of a heterotopic ovarian tissue autotransplantation technique in a large livestock species (i.e., horses) after ovarian fragments were exposed or not to a cooling process (4°C/24 h) and/or VEGF before grafting. Ovarian fragments were collected in vivo via an ultrasound-guided biopsy pick-up method and surgically autografted in a subcutaneous site in both sides of the neck in each mare. The blood flow perfusion at the transplantation …

Getting Ahead Of The Game: A Preventative Assessment Plan For Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristiana Marie Feeser Sep 2020

Getting Ahead Of The Game: A Preventative Assessment Plan For Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristiana Marie Feeser

Dissertations

While we know much about the psychology of sport, little gets translated onto the playing field. Typically, there is only consultation when a problem arises or when performance falls short. The purpose of this study was mainly exploratory in order to gather data on three factors of mental health, find any associations between those factors, and to predict any risk factors using demographic variables. Three validated measurement tools were used to measure burnout (Athlete Burnout Questionnaire; Raedeke & Smith, 2004), depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II; Beck et al., 1996), and transition readiness (British Athletes Lifestyle Assessment Needs in Career and Education; …

Towards Refining Alzheimer's Disease Into Overlapping Subgroups, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin N Hascup Jul 2020

Towards Refining Alzheimer's Disease Into Overlapping Subgroups, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin N Hascup

Articles

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive anterograde amnesia, cerebral atrophy, and eventual death. Current treatment has limited efficacy and cannot decelerate the disease progression. Clinical trials targeting the removal of the neuropathological hallmarks of AD, including accu- mulation of amyloid plaques or neurofibrillary tangles, have failed to modify disease progression. Without new or innovative hypotheses, AD is poised to become a public health crisis within this decade. We present an alternative hypothesis—that AD is the result of multiple interrelated causalities. The intention of this manuscript is to initiate a discussion regarding these multiple causalities and …

Adapting To Obstacles: Inhibition And Creative Potential In A Sample Of Successfully Aging Older Adults, Cassandra Dinius May 2020

Adapting To Obstacles: Inhibition And Creative Potential In A Sample Of Successfully Aging Older Adults, Cassandra Dinius

Dissertations

Studying older adults who are aging ‘successfully’ (i.e., avoiding disease/disability; maintaining high cognitive and physical functioning; engaging in meaningful interpersonal/social engagement) may offer insight into variables that contribute to cognitive change throughout the lifespan. Successful aging is related to levels of engagement, which may be promoted by the problem solving and reevaluation encouraged by the creative process (Fisher & Specht, 1999). Creative thinking requires the consideration of diverse concepts and strategies (e.g., generating many solutions), as well as the regulated filtering of these possibilities (e.g., neither too permissive nor too narrow when eliminating ideas; Baas, De Dreu, & Nijstad, 2011). …

Following national law, there is an examination of the difference in animal law between Kentucky, Nebraska, and the country’s top state for animal law: Illinois. Part III analyzes how law in Illinois fails to provide standards regarding recreational breeding and why this is a problem. Lastly, Part IV proposes a change to Sections 2 and 2.3 of the …

Lifespan Of Long-Lived Growth Hormone Receptor Knockout Mice Was Not Normalized By Housing At 30°C Since Weaning, Yimin Fang, Samuel Mcfadden, Justin Darcy, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin Hascup, Andrzej Bartke Feb 2020

Lifespan Of Long-Lived Growth Hormone Receptor Knockout Mice Was Not Normalized By Housing At 30°C Since Weaning, Yimin Fang, Samuel Mcfadden, Justin Darcy, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin Hascup, Andrzej Bartke

Articles

Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHRKO) mice are remarkably long-lived and have improved glucose homeostasis along with altered energy metabolism which manifests through decreased respiratory quotient (RQ) and increased oxygen consumption (VO2 ). Short-term exposure of these animals to increased environmental temperature (eT) at 30°C can normalize their VO2 and RQ. We hypothesized that increased heat loss in the diminutive GHRKO mice housed at 23°C and the consequent metabolic adjustments to meet the increased energy demand for thermogenesis may promote extension of longevity, and preventing these adjustments by chronic exposure to increased eT will reduce or eliminate their longevity …

The Effects Of Temperature And Precipitation On Growth In Beef Cattle For The Southern Illinois Region, Cameron Helderman Feb 2020

The Effects Of Temperature And Precipitation On Growth In Beef Cattle For The Southern Illinois Region, Cameron Helderman

Research Papers

The demand for beef around the United States has been growing exponentially over the years because of our growing population. This means that producers must maximize the growth and development of their cattle and herds in total so that they can meet that growing demand. Many factors come into consideration when making decisions on increasing the turnover rate on the farm, but one of those big decisions is weather, especially temperature and precipitation. These two variables can have a direct effect on the growth and development of cattle. If conditions are harsh, their feed intake could decrease because of sickness, …

The data from this study showed a higher PUFA content in fish raised on the Plant based diet. The sensory study results indicate a preference the fish raised on the Conventional diet. While these results are not conclusive because of the known variables, …

The Impact Of The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program On Low Income Regions, Quin Colson Jan 2020

The Impact Of The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program On Low Income Regions, Quin Colson

Research Papers

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is a program that evolved from the Food Stamp Program. The Food Stamp Program was started 1939 after the Great Depression to combat food insecurity in the United States. Food insecurity occurs when an individual is without access to enough affordable and nutritious food. According to the USDA, the concept was developed by Henry Wallace, the Secretary of Agriculture and Milo Perkins who became the first administrator of the program. The initial concept was to allow participants in need the opportunity to purchase food, some of which was deemed as surplus. Some think it was …

Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the potential role of vitamin D in its hydroxylated form, 25-OH-Cholecalciferol(25OHD), in moderating the development and attenuation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) via an aged laying hen model. Specifically, thirty-month-old single-comb white Leghorn hens were assigned at random to one of three diets: a control diet (CON) consisting of a standard composition of feed and supplements, a vitamin-D-supplemented group (VID) consisting of the CON diet with an additional 69 μg/kg of 25OHD per day, and a whole flaxseed (WFX) supplemented group used as a comparative intervention standard against the …

The Exploration In The Use Of Andragogy In Coaching Adult Crossfit Athletes, Tiffany Peltier Jan 2020

The Exploration In The Use Of Andragogy In Coaching Adult Crossfit Athletes, Tiffany Peltier

Research Papers

In 1970, Malcolm Knowles defined andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles, 1970 p. 38) and his theory has been used in higher education institutions and many organizations since then. The andragogy philosophy is examined in this qualitative study to determine the value of utilizing andragogy in coaching adult CrossFit athletes. While there are many facets to andragogy, this study specifically uses Malcolm Knowles’ assumptions and principles of adult learners and Bob Pike Group’s 5 Laws of Adult Learning in Creative Training Techniques (1989). The coaches who participated in this study are current CrossFit coaches in …
