Proving Character And Fitness In Illinois Bar Admissions: An Introduction To The Substantive Requirements And The Applicable Procedures, Stephen Fedo
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Although every applicant for admission to the Illinois bar is required to demonstrate good moral character and general fitness to be licensed to practice law, few lawyers and would-be lawyers are familiar with what constitutes proof of character and fitness or the procedures by which such proof is to be made. This Article offers a general introduction to the procedural form and substantive elements of determinations of character and fitness under Illinois Supreme Court Rules. The subjects discussed are: the character and fitness process as a litigated proceeding; the relevant matters to be proved; the four levels of evidentiary review, …
Survey Of Illinois Law: Electronic Filing And Illinois Supreme Court Rule 9, Emmet C. Fairfield
Survey Of Illinois Law: Electronic Filing And Illinois Supreme Court Rule 9, Emmet C. Fairfield
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In 2017, the Illinois Supreme Court mandated electronic filing (e-filing) in civil cases and adopted Illinois Supreme Court Rule 9 to implement the mandate, fifteen years after the court initially authorized e-filing. Since then, the court has made multiple amendments to Rule 9 and has made other efforts to implement e-filing across Illinois. Despite the court’s efforts, the rule has fostered litigation and confusion over when a document is timely and how to seek relief when an e-filing error renders a document untimely. The goal of this Survey is to provide clarity for practitioners on e-filing by examining Rule 9’s …

The Role Of Cultural Humility In Enhancing Successful Intercultural Relationships, Felix Enyan
Research Papers
In the 21st century, it is easy to locate a large group of population in U.S America. For society to thrive, a good intercultural relationship is a fundamental building block for societal advancement. However, individuals inherit cultural biases that discourages healthy intercultural relationships. Concepts like cultural humility aid in addressing the status quo. Cultural humility encourages lifelong learning and self-criticism of one’s view thereby acknowledging inherent bias. To remedy the status quo, cultural humility is introduced to intercultural communicators and individuals engaging in intercultural relationships.

Unauthorized Connections: Censorship As Collective Punishment In The Policing Of Bob Mizer’S Social Relations, Farrah Freibert
Unauthorized Connections: Censorship As Collective Punishment In The Policing Of Bob Mizer’S Social Relations, Farrah Freibert
Publications
Bob Mizer ran his physique photography company, the Athletic Model Guild, for nearly half a century and his work has been celebrated from many perspectives, including historical scholarship, art books, and the development of a dedicated archive. The numerous legal battles that Mizer endured throughout his career have sometimes been interpreted through the lens of individuality, both as a testament to Mizer’s prominence in the development of queer visual culture and as evidence of the lengths anti-gay police would go to stymie his homoerotically-infused artistic endeavors. Yet, importantly, the criminal cases against Mizer also embroiled his associates in the field, …
Where Do I Belong? What Should I Call Home?, Viplav Bhaskar Subramanian
Where Do I Belong? What Should I Call Home?, Viplav Bhaskar Subramanian
Deliberately Queer Journal
Employing autoethnography, this reflection explores the contestations of home-place for queer racialized identities. Tony Adams asserts the vitality of such an embodied investigation when speaking about intersectionally assembled marginalized communities and identities through stating, “I turned to writing stories that others could use in times of relational distress […] by doing and living autoethnography” (Jones et al., 2013, p. 21). In this piece, I delve into my lived experiences, chartering conceptions of belonging while integrating personal stories and theoretical discourses. Such an embodiment, as expressed by Ellingson (2017), considers the body as “simultaneously physical and affective, social and individual, produced …

Pinterest Can Help Teachers Cook A Casserole, But What About Lgbtqia+ Affirming Lesson Plans For Students Of Color?, Denise Villarrial Nealon
Deliberately Queer Journal
We have learned to be crafty homemakers, small space decorators, and even teachers through the eye-catching appeal of sites like Pinterest or Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT). The accessibility and ease of searching for a preset lesson saves time, and in a society where teachers are paid far less than what they are worth and asked to work longer hours than they are paid for, this makes sense. Using the theoretical frameworks of CRT, QueerCrit, and CRP, along with the concepts of intersectionality, can build learning tools for new teachers to disrupt previous exclusionary practices that prevent LGBTQIA+ students of Color …

Pretty And Problematic: The Use Of Music In Guadagnino's 'Call Me By Your Name', Brandon L. Foskett
Deliberately Queer Journal
Tension in the reception of the American-Italian film Call Me by Your Name (dir. Guadagnino, 2017)—as a beautiful film that implicitly condones a problematic narrative—is shaped in part by its compilation soundtrack. Already lauded as a timeless masterpiece in cinematography, sensuality, and music, the film also receives steadfast criticism regarding its portrayal of homosexuality and alleged condoning of interage desire between Elio, a 17-year-old Italian-French boy, and Oliver, a 24-year-old American man. In this paper, I analyze five musical episodes from the film, including The Psychedelic Furs’ “Love My Way,” Ravel’s Une barque sur l’océan, and Sufjan Stevens’s “Mystery …

Dice: An Examination Of Online Dating And Neuroqueer Identity In New Girl, Ashley D. Steele
Deliberately Queer Journal
This paper explores the representation of neurodiversity in popular media, with a specific focus on the television show New Girl. Through a critical analysis of Season 4, Episode 2 ("Dice"), I examine the episode alongside academic and online discussions surrounding female Autistic representation, dating while neurodivergent, and how the character Jessica Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) is often interpreted as Autistic by fan communities. The analysis highlights the pressure on Autistic individuals—both fictional and real—to adopt neurotypical behaviors for the comfort of others, particularly in online dating contexts. I also explore the importance of fan-created content in shaping conversations …

In Transit: Being Non-Binary In A World Of Dichotomies (Review), Kennan Dykstra
Deliberately Queer Journal
In Transit: Being Non-Binary in a World of Dichotomies is a book written by Dex Anderson that explores what it is to be gender nonconformant. With a specific look at the nonbinary experience, the author deconstructs binary ideas about gender through discussions of their own experiences, LGBTQ+ history, and media representation. This review encapsulates the content and structure of Anderson’s book, chapter-by-chapter, to analyze how well it communicates the importance of nonbinary and transgender visibility. This review also examines how well it communicates to the intended audience—not those who are unsympathetic to gender non-conformant identities but those who are newly …

Dewey And Nkrumah On Education: A Comparative Study Of Their Philosophies And Impact On Ghana’S Development, Peter Kojo Kontoh
Dewey And Nkrumah On Education: A Comparative Study Of Their Philosophies And Impact On Ghana’S Development, Peter Kojo Kontoh
Center for Dewey Studies Essay Award
This study explores Ghana’s developmental challenges through the lens of its educational philosophy. Despite decades of effort, the country’s economic growth remains slow, partly due to an education system misaligned with national goals. Scholars debate whether an indigenous or global philosophy of education is best suited to drive progress. This work argues for a blended approach, drawing on John Dewey’s progressive ideas and Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of education for liberation. Through historical-comparative analysis, it proposes a hybrid framework that integrates global relevance with local realities to foster a more effective, development-oriented education system in Ghana.

Your Accent Sounds Tough: Exploring Shifting Indexicalities Of Appalachians Through The Lens Of Citizen Sociolinguistics, Sarah Ramsey
Your Accent Sounds Tough: Exploring Shifting Indexicalities Of Appalachians Through The Lens Of Citizen Sociolinguistics, Sarah Ramsey
Honors Theses
This study investigates how Appalachian English is perceived in online discourse, focusing on the intersections of dialect, identity, and ideology. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s 2024 devastation across Southern Appalachia, YouTube became a site of unexpected metalinguistic and cultural commentary. A citizen sociolinguistics framework is used to examine how outsiders engage with perceived Appalachian English, especially through discussions of class, gender, and accents.
Findings show that Appalachian identity is more favorably received when speakers minimize regional dialect features and align with urban, mainstream ideals. In contrast, speakers who are strongly marked as Appalachian, especially the rural and working class, …

The Problem Of The Whiteness Of Wealth, Elizabeth Tharakan
The Problem Of The Whiteness Of Wealth, Elizabeth Tharakan
Dissertations
In 2021, households with a White householder made up 65.3% of all U.S. households and held 80.0% of all wealth. Those with a Black householder made up 13.6% of all U.S. households but held only 4.7% of all wealth. And their median wealth ($24,520) was about one-tenth the median wealth of households with a White householder ($250,400). This disparity in Black wealth and White wealth is almost an order of magnitude. I seek to understand why the racial wealth gap exists and what people of any race can learn from a nuanced understanding of the interplay among culture, education, and …

The Surge Of The Populist Radical Right: How Transnationalism And Party Systems Influence Populist Radical Right Success And Decline, Liucija Balciunaite
Dissertations
My dissertation examines the causes behind the slows and surges of the populist radical right (PRR) success. I attempt to answer the following question in the context of the growing global legitimacy of the populist radical right (PRR). What process contributes to the slows and surges of populist radical right (PRR) legitimacy? Previous explanations have narrowed the possible conditions influencing populist radical right success in two ways. First, the available literature often analyzes separately the structural and strategic conditions behind populist radical right success. This has created a gap in the literature, especially regarding the possible interaction between the structural …

The Regulatory Void Of Pfas And Contaminated Sites, Irem Tekogul, David Lampert, Farzad Mohammadi, Amandeep K. Sandhu, Matthew Shapiro
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are widely used due to their unique properties. The adverse health impacts of PFAS have been available for the last two decades, but the persistence of inadequate and poorly enforced regulations has led to pervasive environmental contamination. Recent regulatory changes by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency address PFAS in drinking water under the Safe Drinking Water Act and address PFAS in contaminated sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. However, regulatory gaps persist, particularly regarding acceptable risks from sites contaminated with thousands of PFAS. This paper …
