Occupational Therapy For Perinatal Mothers In Rural Community Practice: Development & Implementation Of Educational Modules, Hannah M. Johnson
Occupational Therapy For Perinatal Mothers In Rural Community Practice: Development & Implementation Of Educational Modules, Hannah M. Johnson
OTD Capstone Projects
There are significant gaps in maternal healthcare in rural communities in Illinois where only 65.4% of pregnant people live within 30 minutes of a hospital that provides maternity care (State of Illinois, 2025). Pregnant and postpartum individuals in the region are inadequately supported during their transition to motherhood within the current healthcare system. This capstone project aimed to serve women in Southern Illinois during the perinatal period through occupational therapy-based and trauma-informed educational content. The project was conducted at The Little Resource Center, a parenting and family support center in Carbondale, under the guidance of their staff. Three educational modules, …

Pension System And Corruption In Sub-Saharan Africa, Folake O. Alomilagba
Research Papers
This paper examines the relationship between corruption and pension coverage across Sub-Saharan Africa, where extending old-age income security remains a pressing developmental challenge. Using an unbalanced panel of 42 countries over 2000–2024, drawn from the Worldwide Governance Indicators, World Development Indicators, the International Labor Organization, and the World Bank's ASPIRE database, the study estimates the effect of the control of corruption on the share of the elderly receiving a pension. Pooled OLS, random effects, and two-way fixed effects estimators distinguish cross-country from within-country variation. Control of corruption is positively and significantly associated with coverage across cross-sectional specifications, with effects of …

A Crappy Job: Understanding Septic System Engagement In Rural Great Lakes Communities, Amanda Buday
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This study analyzes survey data from three eastern Lake Michigan watersheds to understand how rural homeowners engage in onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) maintenance. Responses about awareness and use of best management practices (BMPs), knowledge of system age, and barriers to recommended maintenance were used to develop a behavioral typology of homeowner engagement, with profiles ranging from proactive maintenance to passive noncompliance. This typology was then used to examine how management styles vary across geographic context, sociodemographic factors, and support for policy tools to promote proactive system care. While many homeowners report following recommended OWTS practices – even when facing …

In the Great Lakes region, harmful algal blooms (HABs) are known cyanobacterial blooms that pose significant public health, environmental, and socio-economic risks. Risk information related to HABs is primarily communicated through state and local government agencies; however, the effectiveness of these communication strategies and how local stakeholders are learning about such risks remains unclear. The objective of this study is to examine how to effectively communicate HABs risks and understand public risk perceptions of HABs-related risks during recreational lake use in Michigan. Guided by the social amplification of risk framework, this qualitative study conducted fieldwork in 2021, including 27 semi-structured …
Adsorption-Based Electrochemical Assay For Nucleic Acid Detection On 2d Nanomaterials, Prabhangshu Kumer Das
Adsorption-Based Electrochemical Assay For Nucleic Acid Detection On 2d Nanomaterials, Prabhangshu Kumer Das
Dissertations
Electrochemical biosensing based on the adsorption of nucleic acids onto two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials offers distinct advantages over conventional techniques, including enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and simplified probe immobilization. Significant efforts have been directed toward developing sensing platforms that exploit the high surface area and unique physicochemical properties of materials such as graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) to achieve efficient signal transduction. This adsorption-based approach eliminates the need for complex surface modifications or labeling, as nucleic acids interact with 2D surfaces through π–π stacking, van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and ion bridging. The efficiency of nucleic acid immobilization …
Public Perceptions Of Sexual And Dating Violence: How Attitudes On Sexual Education, Pornography, And Masculinity Relate To Rape Myth Acceptance, Bailey Lane Saldana
Public Perceptions Of Sexual And Dating Violence: How Attitudes On Sexual Education, Pornography, And Masculinity Relate To Rape Myth Acceptance, Bailey Lane Saldana
Dissertations
Rape myths are false beliefs that explain sexual violence, and uphold current beliefs on sexual violence (Payne, Lonsway, & Fitzgerald, 1999). These myths can be learned and reinforced through a variety of sources, including formal school-based sexual education programs, pornography consumption, and peers. Through two studies, sexual education and rape myth were examined. In the first study, an exploratory content analysis of state sexual education guidelines was completed to better understand what information and guidance is provided by states to those providing sexual education. In the second study, a sample of 420 U.S. adults completed a factorial survey experiment wherein …
Assessing The Impact Of Social Network On Cyber-Argumentation, Bhargav Krishna Thota
Assessing The Impact Of Social Network On Cyber-Argumentation, Bhargav Krishna Thota
Dissertations
Argumentation is one of the basic activities people perform in our society. People often spend a lot of time arguing about social, cultural, economic, financial, political, and other issues. Existing cyber-argumentation platforms facilitate large-scale discussions among participants and play an important role in the analysis of collective opinions and collective decision-making. However, they do not provide social networking capabilities and are not designed to be used in social networking environments. Social networks in argumentation platforms can reveal the patterns, shifts, and true relationships between the users in a discourse that influence the collective decision-making process, outlier opinions and so on. …

The Crumbling Flsa Collective Action: How Bristol-Myers Squibb Shapes The Reach Of Federal Wage Claims, Elijah Phillips
The Crumbling Flsa Collective Action: How Bristol-Myers Squibb Shapes The Reach Of Federal Wage Claims, Elijah Phillips
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) was meant to help level the playing field and help workers create a healthy working environment for themselves. However, today, due to the Supreme Court’s decision in Bristol-Myers Squibb v. Superior Court of California, San Francisco County and lower federal courts’ eagerness to expand personal jurisdiction, the FLSA is crumbling. Workers now face great difficulty in combining their claims in collective actions through the FLSA. When workers from many states do combine their claims, the workers often face dismissal from the action because not all claims have sufficient connections with the chosen litigation forum. …
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Theses
The overuse of fertilizers has doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen in the environment. Agricultural runoff then carries these pollutants into the waterways eventually causing severe ecological damage such as the Gulf of Mexico dead zone. Nitrogen plays an important role in all life on this planet, here we describe two complementary projects that investigate ways to mitigate nitrogen pollution. The first project investigates denitrification rates in soil after the Len Small Levee breached in 2016 which reconnected the Dogtooth Bend Floodplain with the Mississippi briefly. The denitrification process that began in the hydrologically activated soils was hypothesized to be …

Echo’S Repertoire: Performing Science Fiction And Trans Care Models, Juniper Blue
Theses
Echo’s Repertoire is a mixture of a passion piece and a call for more work with performing science fiction. It focuses on interpersonal communication within trans studies and the experiences of transgender individuals and myself. Echo’s Repertoire is also an example of the Lyrical Model proposed by Awkward-Rich as a new model for trans affirming speech. The show is laid out non-linearly and follows along with Echo as he starts to build new relationships with the advice of his spaceship ai, Eep, who is a previous version of himself prior to transformation (transition).
Beyond The Mozart Effect: How Musical Experience And Emotional Response Shape Individual Differences In Spatial Reasoning, Connor Watkinson
Beyond The Mozart Effect: How Musical Experience And Emotional Response Shape Individual Differences In Spatial Reasoning, Connor Watkinson
Theses
Research on the Mozart effect (the short-term enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning after music listening) has yielded inconsistent results, often due to overlooking individual differences and using limited stimuli. This study examined multiple musical conditions (popular lyrical, classical, and white noise control) while considering the moderating roles of musical experience and the mediating influence of emotional responses. Undergraduate participants (N = 162) completed spatial reasoning assessments before and after an eight-minute listening session, alongside measures of musical background, listening habits, mood, and music-evoked emotions.Analyses revealed no overall difference in spatial reasoning improvement between music and white noise conditions. However, substantial individual …

Examining Associations Between Internalized Racism, Psychological Flexibility, And Well-Being Among Bipoc, Cerella Chandra
Examining Associations Between Internalized Racism, Psychological Flexibility, And Well-Being Among Bipoc, Cerella Chandra
Dissertations
Internalized racism has been defined as the adoption of negative stereotypes related to one’s racial/ethnic group and associated with psychological distress. There is little research on the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on diverse populations, but recent intervention studies have indicated that psychological flexibility may counter the negative psychological effects of self-stigma. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between internalized racism, psychological flexibility, and psychological distress and life satisfaction among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Self-report data was collected using Qualtrics with prospective participants recruited from a large public university in the …
Predictors Of Cyberbullying And Help-Seeking Behaviors In Rural Midwestern Schools: A Multilevel Modeling Analysis, Ashley M. Harrison-Pavlik
Predictors Of Cyberbullying And Help-Seeking Behaviors In Rural Midwestern Schools: A Multilevel Modeling Analysis, Ashley M. Harrison-Pavlik
Dissertations
Cyberbullying is a significant problem throughout the United States. Many risk factors have been identified for cyberbullying victimization, including experiencing traditional bullying victimization, social media usage, gender, and underrepresented racial/ethnic status, although the results are inconclusive. In response to cyberbullying, youth may choose to engage in or avoid help-seeking behaviors. Individual characteristics such as age, gender, frequency of victimization, race and ethnicity, and student perceptions of school staff can influence whether a youth seeks help. School level variables, including anti-bullying policies and teacher awareness and perceptions of cyberbullying may also impact help-seeking behaviors. However, few studies have empirically assessed their …
A Qualitative Interpretative Meta-Analysis Of The Experiences Of Women Under Community Supervision, Gifty Kinful
A Qualitative Interpretative Meta-Analysis Of The Experiences Of Women Under Community Supervision, Gifty Kinful
Research Papers
Research reveals that women parolees or probationers encounter both challenges and support systems as they navigate their reintegration into the community. More specifically, most women returning from prison and those on probation are released into a society of stigma where access to housing, employment, education, transportation, and healthcare services is either severely limited or nonexistent. These serious obstacles can undermine their ability, motivation, and desire to succeed while on probation or parole. Support systems may be more or less available and effective. The qualitative literature on women under community supervision is large but to our knowledge, the diverse studies have …

Beyond The Bananas: Grief, Grace, & The Groove, Abby L. Asher
Research Papers
The term 'participatory documentary' was first coined by Bill Nichols, a documentary theorist. He describes it as a mode of documentary where the observer interacts with the observed, and the filmmaker becomes a subject of the film. What started as a little documentary about a minor league baseball team's line dance group composed of women over the age of 65, shifted when tragedy hit the 'observer'. It turned out these ladies were now in the right place at the right time to help guide the documentary maker out of her grief. What resulted was a new documentary with a participatory …
