The Search For Binding Partners Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Phosphatase Cpp1, Lea Matschke
The Search For Binding Partners Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Phosphatase Cpp1, Lea Matschke
Honors Theses
Chlamydia trachomatis is a Gram negative, obligate intracellular bacterium responsible for the most common reportable bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States and the leading infectious cause of preventable blindness worldwide. This pathogen undergoes a unique biphasic developmental cycle where it alternates between its infectious form, termed the elementary body (EB), and its replicative form, termed the reticulate body (RB). We hypothesize that reversible phosphorylation regulates the differentiation of the bacterium between these two forms. In order to study phosphorylation in Chlamydia, it is necessary to examine the role of individual kinases and phosphatases in the organism. My …

Assessing Biomineral Formation By Iron-Oxidizing Bacteria In A Circumneutral Creek, Nohemi Almaraz, Andrew H. Whitaker, Megan Y. Andrews, Owen W. Duckworth
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Iron oxidizing bacteria and environmental conditions influence the formation of iron biominerals in aquatic environments. This 10-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) study focused on elucidating how water chemistry and iron oxidizing bacteria affect the formation of iron oxides in creeks with circumneutral pH. Two locations, each with multiple microenvironments containing abundant iron oxide deposits, were studied. Water chemistry was assessed via both in situ and laboratory analysis over a 5-week period, revealing correlations between aqueous components that indicate differing groundwater sources may feed nearby discharge points. Microscopy of iron oxide deposits reveals morphologies consistent with the presence of iron …

Design And Manufacturing Of High Surface Area 3d-Printed Media For Moving Bed Bioreactors For Wastewater Treatment, Olivia Elliott, Stephanie Gray, Michael Mcclay, Bakr Nassief, Ann Nunnelley, Eric Vogt, Joseph Ekong, Kamran Kardel, Ali Khoshkhoo, Gabriel Proano, David M. Blersch, Andres L. Carrano
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The specific surface area and topology of a biofilter media carrier is one of the most important parameters that determines the performance and efficiency of the system. In this work, mathematical models and 3D printing technologies were used to design and fabricate complex media designs that provide high specific surface area and refugia to protect biofilm from premature sloughing. Several gyroid based designs were proposed with specific surface area well beyond 2300 m2/m3. However, wall thicknesses and pore sizes that are prone to clogging determined a design that yields 1168 m2/m3 (133% larger than the baseline commercial K1 Kaldnes). Several …
Governor Rauner’S Turnaround Agenda From A Comparative State Policy Context, Marnie Leonard
Governor Rauner’S Turnaround Agenda From A Comparative State Policy Context, Marnie Leonard
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The purpose of this research is to study Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, which he initially unveiled in 2015 after taking office. His plan was meant to overhaul state government with goals that were largely focused on keeping businesses in Illinois and convincing new businesses to take root, but proposals like limiting union power and decreasing workers’ compensation costs for employers have kept him at odds with Democratic lawmakers like House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. This has led to an unprecedented budget stalemate in the Capitol as neither side is willing to compromise. Now, after …
Dating_Missrepresentation.Com: Black Women's Lived Love-Hate Relationship With Online Dating, James Henry Johnson
Dating_Missrepresentation.Com: Black Women's Lived Love-Hate Relationship With Online Dating, James Henry Johnson
Dissertations
The increased use of online dating sites has further encouraged corporations’ attempts to capitalize on these mate-seeking trends. Match.com, eHarmony, and OkCupid are primary competitors in a growing market of individuals seeking out potential romantic partners. They offer several mainstream dating options as well as niche-dating sites. Similar to society at large where dating still occurs offline, scholars have revealed that racial hierarchies exist within various online platforms. As such, the roles of gender and ethnicity in online dating environments merit study. Specifically, the experiences of Black women who use Internet dating sites, a virtually unexplored demographic, form the basis …
Pedagogy Of Accomplice: Navigating Complicity In Pedagogies Aimed Toward Social Justice, Robyn Stout Sheridan
Pedagogy Of Accomplice: Navigating Complicity In Pedagogies Aimed Toward Social Justice, Robyn Stout Sheridan
Dissertations
In this study, I introduce and analyze the role of complicity in discussions of social justice pedagogies to determine how teachers, who teach social justice oriented courses, navigate complicity. Through an in-depth review of social justice education literature, I show that teacher/scholars rely upon four context-dependent discourses of complicity: (1) responsibility, (2) consciousness-awareness, (3) relation to world, self and others, and (4) inevitability and implicature. In order to understand how these discourses impact pedagogies that seek to make connections between people and social systems, I selected teacher/scholars who are widely published, read, and assigned in social justice oriented fields. I …
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Honors Theses
The evolution of museological theory at the Bibliotheque de Sainte-Genevieve marks a transition in the history of collecting during the early modern period. Although the contents of the collection remained largely unchanged from earlier Wunderkammern, the acquisition, display, and organization of artifacts within the cabinet had evolved tremendously by the end of the 17th century and one can begin to see the collection as a predecessor of modern museological methodologies.

Neoliberal Environmentalism In The War On Poverty: A Case Study Of Carbondale, Illinois, Gregory Matthew Carter
Neoliberal Environmentalism In The War On Poverty: A Case Study Of Carbondale, Illinois, Gregory Matthew Carter
Theses
The following thesis examines the city of Carbondale, Illinois, during the tumultuous years between 1965 and 1975. Carbondale was the recipient of large amounts of funding from the Model Cities program, part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. During that time, Carbondale experienced violent anti-war protests and community-wide unrest. At the same time as Model Cities projects began, the modern environmentalism movement surrounding the first observance of Earth Day, April 22, 1970, also occurred. Within four years, environmental groups comprised mostly of white citizens were pitted against African-American community activists working to improve Carbondale’s segregated Northeast neighborhood and the …
Digital Laser Speckle Image Correlation, Mahshad Mosayebi
Digital Laser Speckle Image Correlation, Mahshad Mosayebi
Theses
This thesis examines the feasibility of combining Digital Image Correlation (DIC) with laser speckle based methods to form a new hybrid deformation measurement method called Digital Laser Speckle Image Correlation (DilSIC). Consequently, this method does not require any sample preparation and allows for the measurement of displacement of micro structures in addition to large displacements. In this technique, a coherent 30mW-632nm laser beam is expanded with 40X lens and then illuminated on the target surface to produce a fine, homogenous laser speckle pattern. Images were captured before and after deformation due to external load and the whole field displacement and …

Education From The "Bottom" Up: Black Women Navigating The Community College Transfer Experience, Kristin Dade
Dissertations
This study looks at the experiences of 11 Black women as they transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions. This study employs Black Feminist Thought to help analyze the experiences of Black women who transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions. This framework is particularly applicable to this study because Black Feminist Thought recognizes the varied experiences that women encounter based on their intersecting identities (such as race and gender). Although Black women share some common racial and gender experiences, Black Feminist Thought acknowledges the fact that each woman ultimately has her own narrative, which influences how she perceives and …
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Dissertations
The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. …
In Pursuit Of A Black Identity In Contemporary South Africa: Culture, Class, And Gender In Wedding Reality Tv Shows, Tv Audience Comments, And Wedding Speeches, Lindani Memani
Dissertations
This research reveals the opaque social hierarchies which work to structure Black life in contemporary South Africa. Using a multi-modal critical discourse analysis, and four theories: hegemony, neoliberalism, post-feminism and African womanism, this study analyzes the representation of weddings in Our Perfect Wedding and Top Billing Weddings, two South African wedding reality television programs. In addition, the study examines the TV programs’ audience narratives in online spaces. Analyzing online conversations helps to show how audiences actively engage with and interpret messages disseminated by the TV shows as they talk back to the shows and among themselves. The study also examines …
A Case Study Of Peer Assessment In A Mooc-Based Composition Course: Students’ Perceptions, Peers’ Grading Scores Versus Instructors’ Grading Scores, And Peers’ Commentary Versus Instructors’ Commentary, Lan Thi Vu
Dissertations
Although the use of peer assessment in MOOCs is common, there has been little empirical research about peer assessment in MOOCs, especially composition MOOCs. This study aimed to address issues in peer assessment in a MOOC-based composition course, in particular student perceptions, peer-grading scores versus instructor-grading scores, and peer commentary versus instructor commentary. The findings provided evidence that peer assessment was well received by the majority of student participants from their perspective as both peer evaluators of other students’ papers and as students being evaluated by their peers. However, many student participants also expressed negative feelings about certain aspects of …
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Research Papers
Biochar is the product of burning biomass, such as hardwood, rice hulls, bamboo, or even chicken litter, in a low- to no-oxygen environment. The result is a black carbon skeletal-like structure of the original biomass.
Research into biochar as a soil amendment has been influenced by the study of anthropogenic dark, richly fertile soils found in the Amazon rainforest where the native forest soil is acidic and low in fertility. Biochar research for amending agricultural soils is relatively new but there are strong indications that this practice can decrease the need for additional fertilizer and water inputs.
Biochar products will …

The Market Value Of Who We Are: The Flow Of Personal Data And Its Regulation In China, Dong Han
The Market Value Of Who We Are: The Flow Of Personal Data And Its Regulation In China, Dong Han
Articles
This article focuses on market-driven collection of personal data and its regulation in China. It argues that there is a growing demand for personal data from China’s advertising, marketing, and credit reporting businesses. Meanwhile, the rapid development of the Internet, notably social media and e-commerce, has generated very large pools of personal data on digital platforms. These two factors contribute to the fast growth of both legitimate and illegitimate collection and exploitation of personal information. Chinese laws and regulations lag behind the market and are not ready to regulate personal data as a key economic resource. They scatter in a …
