The Transition: From College Athletics To A Post-Athletic Life, Erica Smith
Research Papers
The purpose of this study is to examine the transition out of college sports for student-athletes who have graduated within the last 10 years from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Through understanding the competitive, academic and social aspects of each these former athlete’s lives, there is a hope to understand how one’s social life experiences prepare them for their transition out of sport. Participants were selected for in-depth interviews through referrals from the SIUC athletic department (coaches, administration and staff) and from my own connections with former student-athletes. I found that all of the participants did experience some level of …

Fashimia – Combating Negative Female Self - Image Through Online Community, Dar`Ya Bondareva
Fashimia – Combating Negative Female Self - Image Through Online Community, Dar`Ya Bondareva
Research Papers
The present study aimed to investigate the power and influence of fashion
magazines on Caucasian teenaged girls, aged 13 to 18 years old. Strong negative
associations were found between exposure to fashion magazines and teenage girls`
perceptions of their bodies. Furthermore, the present research studied teenagers online
activities and behavior in order to support the statement that the best way to reach
teenage girls in digital era is through online community. The lack of websites and
magazines that promote positive and healthy body image reinforced the need for
creation of an online community targeted at “plus size” teenaged girls aged …

Examining Mechanims Of Political Disagreement, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey, J. Drew Seib
Examining Mechanims Of Political Disagreement, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey, J. Drew Seib
Working Papers
This research seeks to develop and test hypotheses about how political disagreement in social networks aects political behavior. We conduct experimental research to test whether subjects' acquaintances act as independent sources of information, and examine two dierent models of
how such social stimuli may produce effects|either via information seeking, or information shortcuts. These tests are important because prior research is ambiguous on whether causal effects come from networks, and on potential mechanisms of infuence. Our results back aspects of both models, but more strongly support the notion of disagreement as a heuristic|subjects
primed to consider disagreement before a mock election …
In Search Of A Third Culture: Towards An Experimental Science And Nature Cinema, Walter C. Metz
In Search Of A Third Culture: Towards An Experimental Science And Nature Cinema, Walter C. Metz
Publications
This essay attempts to move beyond C.P. Snow’s reductive formulation of the two cultures, positing a third culture forged out of the collision of science documentary television with the avant-garde traditions of the cinema. In particular, I use both scientific and humanistic understandings of memory to compare and contrast a science television program, “Understanding the Mysteries of Memory” (Science Channel, 2002) with an avant-garde film, Report (Bruce Conner, 1967).

The Impact Of Acculturation On Sport Motivation Among Mexican-American Adolescent Athletes, Todd A. Ryska
The Impact Of Acculturation On Sport Motivation Among Mexican-American Adolescent Athletes, Todd A. Ryska
The Psychological Record
Although sport psychology research has revealed differences
in motivational orientation among athletes from various ethnic
groups (Duda, 1985, 1986a; Whitehead, 1986), no work has
addressed the impact of within-group variation in acculturation on
motivational goal perspectives. Multiple regression analyses were
conducted on data generated from young Mexican-American male
(n = 83) and female (n = 80) athletes. Among males, the
acculturation dimensions of media use (f3 = .265, P < .001) and
ethnic social relations (f3 = .188, P < .001) significantly predicted a
task goal perspective, explaining 32% of the variance, whereas
increased ego involvement among female athletes was
significantly predicted by language use (f3 = .336, …
