Swertia L. (Gentianaceae) In Nepal Himalaya: Checklist, Phytogeography, Ethnobotany And Conservation Status, Kunjani Joshi, Ananda Joshi
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Swertia L., a morphologically diverse but taxonomically distinct genus’s circumscription has often been debated. Four problems still need to be solved: species delimitation, section delimitation, and relation with allied genera and domestication of the species for economic benefits. In the present paper an attempt has been made to prepare a checklist of Swertia species, and documentation of distribution patterns, existing ethnobotanical uses and conservation practices in Nepal. Some integrated measures, which might help to fill up the gaps in our knowledge, are also recommended.

Local watershed planning is an increasingly important component of environmental management. This article provides an overview of local watershed management efforts occurring across the US and then focuses on one case study from southern Illinois. First, analysis of 1145 local watershed groups shows that government agencies, farmers, and rural residents are key stakeholders in local groups that primarily deal with regional environmental stressors in the form of soil erosion, nutrients, and agrichemicals. Second, the role of watershed partnerships in mediating the complex interactions among stakeholders and local water resources are investigated through a case study of one watershed group. The …

We present results from a 15-year 10-member warm season (March–September) hindcast ensemble of maximum and minimum surface air temperatures and precipitation in southeast USA. The hindcasts are derived from the Florida State University/Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies Global Spectral Model (FSU/COAPS GSM) and downscaled using both the FSU/COAPS Nested Regional Spectral Model (NRSM) and a statistical downscaling method based on stochastic weather generator techniques. We additionally consider statistical bias correction of the dynamical model output. Basic descriptive statistics indicate that the bias-corrected and statistically downscaled data reduce the FSU/COAPS GSM bias considerably in terms of basic climatology. Statistics describing the …

Environmental Issues And Need Of Sustainable Development In The Earthquake Affected Areas, State Of Azad Jammu And Kashmir Pakistan, Ejaz Ur-Rehman
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The aim of this investigation is to provide an overview of qualitative study of the earthquake affected area toward identification of environmental issues and sustainable development. The results of these studies suggest that Environmental issues and Sustainable Development concepts have often been ignored in relief, rehabilitation and development activities in the earthquake affected areas state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. This study contributes to our current knowledge of disaster relocation literature and sustainable development of community. Hopefully, the information that is provided here will help guide policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in their applied and academic work and further the …

An Overview Of Forest Habitat's Situation In Village Barali Kass, Kotli Azad Kashmir Pakistan, Ejaz Ur-Rehman
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
An overview of the Forest Habitat's situation in Village Barali Kass Kotli Azad Kashmir Pakistan revealed that the area facing great forest habitat peril. Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation are an issue of primary concern in the area of Village Barali Kass. The purpose of this study was to look at the causes which exploit these meagre and fragile forest resources in the area and what are the measures to nullify this situation.

Indigenous Plants Based Biodiesel Resources In Pakistan, Mushtaq Ahmad, Mir Ajar Khan, Muhammad Zafar, Shazia Sultana, Sobia Gulzar
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Biodiesel is an emerging solution for the present day concerns about rising oil prices and depletion of fossil fuel resources throughout the world. In current scenario due to shortage of energy resources, biodiesel is very good option for energy security in Pakistan. There are large arable lands with good climatic conditions for large biomass production of biodiesel yielding species. In this study data is compiled to identify plant species bearing seeds rich in oil for biodiesel production. Among them the most important are Pongamia pinnata, Brassica spp. and Ricinus communis. Bio fuel reduce dependence on imported petroleum with associated political …

Population Genetics Of The Carinate Pillsnail, Euchemotrema Hubrichti: Genetic Structure On A Small Spatial Scale, Frank E. Anderson
Population Genetics Of The Carinate Pillsnail, Euchemotrema Hubrichti: Genetic Structure On A Small Spatial Scale, Frank E. Anderson
Publications
Euchemotrema hubrichti (Pilsbry HA (1940) Volume 1, Part 2. Monographs of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, 3, I-VI, 2, 575–994, I-IX) is a polygyrid land snail known only from the Larue Pine Hills region of southwestern Illinois, USA. Despite the restricted range of the species, observations in the field suggested that patterns of genetic variation within E. hubrichti might show geographic structure. To assess the dispersal potential of E. hubrichti, a mark-recapture experiment was performed at two sites <100 meters apart. To evaluate the geographic distribution of genetic>variation, a region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene was sequenced from 53 snails collected from sites …100>

U.S. Water Resources Management Under The Uncertainty Of Climate Change, Laura J. Stroup
2007
This paper will explore the contribution of the Natural Hazards field to environmental management and Geography while also describing new frameworks, evolved from traditional hazards inquiry into the climate change vulnerability and adaptation field. It will also describe the author’s development of an empirically-based research program to explore adaptation of U.S. water resources management to the uncertainty of climate change and variability in the U.S. at the river basin scale.

Virtual Watershed: Co-Production Of Agricultural Commodities And Ecosystem Services From An Agricultural Watershed, Christopher Lant Et Al.
2007
Funded through the NSF Biocomplexity in the Environment program, this project investigates this ecological economic dilemma by constructing a spatial decision support system called Virtual Watershed that combines environmental simulation models, geographic information systems, evolutionary algorithms, and agent-based modeling to capture the interactions among economic conditions, public policies, land and water managers’ behavior, and the resulting ecological and economic performance of a watershed.
